Sexist Art

guys i was looking at paintings and came across these shocking works (might be NSFW if your employer objects to nudity in classical art):

"La Nymphée" by some guy called Bouguereau or something, very sexist but what do you expect from a Frenchman

"Green Eyes" by Arantzazu Martinez who i think is a woman, but looking at the painting it's clearly misogynistic (why is the woman doing a sexy pose with her tits out when the guy doesn't have his dick out?) so she probably hates her own gender

"Slave Market in Rome" by Jean-Léon Gérôme, another misogynistic frog-eater just like that Bououguoroeua bloke or whatever he was called. who could possibly enjoy looking at a painting of women being sold as slaves? a sexist, that's who

"Hylas and the Nymphs" by John William Waterhouse, this is clearly the sexual fantasy of a 12-year-old boy which is probably how old Waterhouse was when he painted this juvenile and pathetic work

what a bunch of sexist, misogynistic, juvenile, sexist sexists these artists are. i hope people boycott their paintings or something because this is just disgusting. no one who respects women could possible paint or appreciate something like this. i think the works have even been displayed on museums, can you believe that? hanging there on the wall, oppressing innocent women who only wanted to look at nice paintings, but no, i guess they can't even be allowed to do that without the patriarchy slapping them in the face. we should let the painters know how sexist they are on forums or maybe if a blogger reads this you could make a blog about it so they can read it and realize the error of their woman-hating ways, i think some of them may be dead so I guess we can't reach those but they are sexist anyway

@darji: I don't think that's very true.

I have no idea what's up with Anita Sarkeesian (I've never watched any of her videos), but sometimes feminists can be silly, too. And, if that is in fact what she thinks she's not very good at feminism. Nudity=/=sex or sexualization. Nudity can serve a purpose. It's the absence of any purpose other than "check out this girl's tits" that can be offensive to sex negative feminists or whatev which I think is completely valid.

It sounds weird, but I like that we can have these kind of conversations about vidya games now. It's like video games are growing up.

No Anita is clearly a negative sex feminists and pro sex feminists really dislike her as well. And I do not think this is any form of growing up. Growing up would mean to accept any kind of games. In a grown up environment there should be place for everything "legal". If you do not like it to not buy it that is how you make your voice known and not through dumb articles calling a Persona 4 anti gay and anti trans gender. or a game like Killer is dead sexist because of one goofy mini game.

(also I love that apparently it's the fact that they're naked is the only problem or is even a problem)

All of the feminist "problems" are present throughout the entire history of art: women being sexualized to a far greater extent than men, female characters being weak or in need of rescuing more often than men, the prominence of male power fantasies etc. I have already had a lengthy discussion about sexism, classical art and the criticism of video game aesthetics in this thread months ago, where I said pretty much all that needs to be said on the matter. This blog was just for comedy when I saw people were still having the same stupid talk (and concerning the same game, too).

How circular.

I'm not saying pornography shouldn't be preserved or couldn't be of historical importance. I'm just explaining why things are the way they are now -- you're the one who asked.

You didn't really explain anything. Your answer to "Why is one form socially accepted and another isn't" was "Because one is socially accepted and another isn't".

@darji: I am not leading a witch hunt. I even stated in the other thread that I personally didn't have any issue with Dragon's Crown.

I just like what could be an adult discussion about adult issues in a medium that's typically written off as childish non-sense.

What I don't like is everyone flailing their arms about wildly and shouting down the topic.

@wrighteous86: I am just fighting on the same level. Otherwise it would not be fun^^

Also I think she is the biggest problem of the whole issue right now.

And here something to read:

http://art-eater.com/2013/03/from-mickey-mouse-to-jesus-the-latest-dragons-crown-trailer-is-full-of-epic-homages/

That article is great and super detailed, probably more detailed than anything anyone ever wrote about this game ever. Good job to the guy who wrote that. I feel like if everyone read that, even if they are offended, they would understand the artist's inspiration a bit more.

This isn't funny; neither as satire nor as an ironic, comic misunderstanding of what sexism is.

Also, that slave market painting is one of the most stark representations of female oppression that I have ever laid eyes on.

A lot of radical feminists probably have that as a poster.

No? It's extremely historically and culturally important, hence it is preserved, restored, displayed publicly and taught about in schools, hence it's socially acceptable. If it wasn't of such great cultural or historical significance we wouldn't bother preserving it, restoring it and teaching about it. If we didn't do that and an old nude painting was suddenly displayed in public in today's society, the people present would be likely to think "Ew, porn, how shameful!" instead of "Oh, a beautiful classical painting, how nice!".

In what way? What makes it art and not porn? History is not a sufficient answer. The Sistine Chapel has a lot of upfront nudity adorning its ceiling, but the Catholic Church is well known as censoring sexually themed art during the Protestant Reformation; what's the dividing line between these two instances? Maybe not the best example, but hopefully, the meaning gets through.

If only you'd act that way about Anita Sarkeesian.

At this point, you're saying do not have a witch hunt against a witch hunt.

And anyone who thinks that the art in Dragon's Crown ISN'T sexist is wrong. Just like anyone who thinks that the art in Dragon's Crown IS sexist is wrong.

Subjectivity, people. It's kind of an important concept. Your opinion doesn't make your thoughts on a subject like this objective truth, and people on both sides of the fence need to stop pretending otherwise.

You guys know that the only people making such a big deal about this "sexism" bullshit are white knights trying to get laid and sex negative feminists, and they make up probably less than 5% of the gaming population. I really don't know why it's such a big deal now, when there was no one bitching about it 3 years ago. Is it just some new trend that the cool kids are into, or what?

@video_game_king: Technically, there is no distinction: porn is a type of art. Colloquially and in terms of social acceptance, however, there is definitely a distinction.
