Open World 2D Platformer

What would you guys think of a game that played kind of like Metroid, but was more open world?  Things you do affect other parts of the world, and you can pretty much go wherever you want, assuming that you have the equipment to get there.

Casts of Podding

After listening to voices such as Garnett Lee, Jeff Gerstmann, and all the members of their respective podcasts, it seems to me that good content is far from the only bullet point that drives podcasts onto people’s iPods.

It’s the cast that sells the product.

Nobody wants to listen to random people talk about anything, so in order to get listeners to come back week after week, they have to like the people who are on the show, and start to feel as if they know them.

The Giant Bombcast from the guys at Giant Bomb have done a great job of this.  Not only have they had basically the same exact cast since the conception of their podcast, they talk about things other than video games.  In the beginning, in fact, they had a hard time keeping any sort of direction at all, but now I feel as if I know them better.

In the same sense, Garnett Lee has been a mainstay for my ears for some time now.  Even though he’s had multiple casts around him, (none better than John Davison, Shane Bettenhausen, and Luke Smith, sorry other guys) he’s been a constant force and is almost a cast in his own right.  I want to know what Garnett thinks of games and his opinions change what I buy.

All of this brings me to the point of this rambling: Picking a good cast and sticking with it is important.

That’s why Chance and I are working hard to find a large group of people to pick from.

We’ll be keeping you up to date.

Archangel428 Productions' Direction

When I first started cultivating the idea of a production company, I wanted to start with podcasts just because I thought that those would be fun to produce and would have a minimal start-up cost. While both of these items are true, what I've since realized is that working around college student schedules is basically impossible.  So a few changes and recent events have changed the business plan slightly.

It's looking as though the first application to bare the Archangel428 Productions logo will be one for the study abroad center at the university I attend.  I've also found a man to take the reigns of the podcasting beast that I'd originally wanted to tame to allow me to work on the application and a game that I'm making on the side.

My goal is to work on these two programs, oversee podcast production, and still find time to write blog posts like this.  While I'm doing that, Brian James, my brother, will be making video content from a multitude of games and posting them on our youtube channel.  The videos will be from there will embedded on this site regularly.  Finally, Chance Frerichs, the new Podcast Producer, and I have been throwing ideas around for podcasts and other content for the site.  Hopefully we can have some beta podcasts up and running in the next month or so.

Please stay tuned for content from us and I hope that you enjoy it.  You can follow us on twitter at Archngl428_Prod, check out the youtube channel under Archangel428Product, and hit up the Archangel428 Productions website.

Video Game Snob

I want to make video games.  It's been my goal for around three years now, and up until about a month ago, I'd been a failure.  Now, though, a crappy little dual-joystick shooter has been birthed from my fingertips, sent through the python interpreter, and emerged unto the world.

Because I want to make video games, I'm unusually harsh on them and sometimes forget to just have fun.  A good example is the mainstream darling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.  While the entire world seems to be dripping at the site of this game, and I myself would have to shake the hands of the developers for coming up with such a good progression for a game type that is really very repetitive at its core, that doesn't mean that the gun combat is good.

I grew up with an S style Xbox controller in my hand and a copy of Halo or Halo 2 in my console.  This has caused me to want a combat encounter in a game against another player to last more than half a second.  In the Halo series, players don't die instantly unless hit in the head with a sniper or at the feet by a massive explosion.  In CoD, death is imminently instant if you're spotted by a half-way decent player.  Here's the thing people, when it takes longer to kill someone, that means that you have to be a better player.  This means that Halo actually requires skill.

As a future game developer, I can understand very easily the three reasons that Infinity Ward made the decision to traverse the path of a low health shooter.  One, the satisfaction a player feels from killing someone quickly and seeing the big points flash up on the screen is basically like shooting heroine straight into your cornea.  The instant gratification is something that the console generation has grown accustom to, and it shines through in this game.  Two, twitch shooters are making a comeback.  They were never really gone, but the days of Quake lan parties are over and, let's face it, Quake is the quintessential twitch game.  Finally, because Halo's combat takes more skill, the level of play can be overwhelming to say the least.  A casual player will never be able to get more than a couple, more-than-likely, luck kills in a game when playing on the MLG playlist.  Modern Warfare lets you jump right in and kill even the best of players if you see them first.  Feels great to kill the guy with 35 kills on the match, am I right?

The last thing that I want to say is that if anyone reading this is a PC player who laughs at the idea of using a joystick to shoot people, I say enjoy it while it lasts.  The migration to consoles started long ago and it's only getting worse for you.  Hope your back problems get better soon, I'm gonna go lay on the couch and play Dead Space 2.

Hello all,

I've just started this temp website to work as the home of my production company, Archangel428 Productions.  There's more information on the site if you're interested, but the first beta podcast will be recorded this weekend and I'm pretty excited about it.

Here's the site, let me know what you think:
