GOTY 2014

There weren't a lot of games that grabbed me in 2014 - half of the games on my list didn't even come out this year! That being said, I've probably spent more time with my top two choices, than I have with any other game these last couple of years.

So while the breadth of games didn't really impress me this year - I did enjoy the heck out of the few games that did.

Note: I was tempted to put Dark Souls (the first one) on this list, having recently replayed it, but I decided that the souls-series was already sufficiently represented.

List items

  • I couldn't really have been anything else, could it?

First things first, Dark Souls II isn't the revelatory experience Dark Souls was.

Dark Souls painted such a convincing picture of its world, that it never quite felt like a videogame, while Dark Souls 2 often comes across as a series of levels rather than a cohesive world.

That being said, Dark Souls 2 is still a fantastic videogame. In terms of mechanics, it improves upon the first game in almost every way, not to mention performance and graphical enhancements. In short, Dark Souls 2 is a much more "pleasent" game to play, as much as one can use that term in the context of a Souls-game.

Of course, the icing on the cake is the Lost Crowns DLC, which often surpasses the main game in terms of re-creating the amtosphere of the first Dark Souls - not to mention its bosses, which are some of the best in the series.

I've finished Dark Souls 2 three times this year, and I'm likely do to so again next year when "Scholar of the First Sin" is released.

  • Let's face it; SF4 isn't exactly a new game and the additions they made to Ultra didn't really do much for me.

However, this was the year I got deep into Street Fighter and really started to appreciate the game's finesse. I've probably spent more time with Street Fighter in 2014 than I have since it first released in 2008, and that makes it my number two, regardless.

  • I've always thought Chivalry to be a pretty neat game - the way you can control the trajectory of your attacks via the mouse is quite unlike anything else I've played.

However, playing Chivalry with a group of friends for the first time this year, took the game to a whole different level; dismbembering my friends is perhaps the most outright "fun" I've had all year.

Also, they should change the title of the game to "Dismemberment With Friends".

  • I probably enjoyed LoS2 more than it deserves, and certainly more than I think most people would. What annoys me the most about the game isn't that parts of it are terrible, it's that parts of it are great - at its best, LoS2 is a fantastic game, its just a shame that more often that not, its a mediocre one.

  • Okay, so this little indie racer came out in 2012. Do I care? No, and neither should you. In many ways, Little Racers Street is the racing game time forgot, and for at least a couple of weeks it had me completely hooked.

  • The game cleverly mixes elements of rogue-likes with a progression system in the vein of Cookie Clicker to create something eerily addictive. Throw in a short gameplay loop, put it on a handheld system and you're basically left with some sort of digital crack-pipe.

I'm not sure how much I like Rogue Legacy - but I know that I've spent quite a bit of time with it already and that I'm likely to spend a lot more!
