The Naughty Dog Pattern

I have no idea if this has been brought up before,   (it seems like a familiar subject, maybe brought up by the bomb squad) but has anyone noticed that Naughty Dog have a pattern of creating three games within a franchises, then moving on to a new one. I mean, they started out with Crash Bandicoot which were one of the flagship games for the Playstation then created two sequels, and then a driving game 'Crash Team Racing'. Then for the Playstation 2, they brought out what you assume was another flagship game, Jak and Daxter. Again this was followed up by two sequels and a racing game Jak X: Combat Racing. Lastly is obviously Uncharted which is again one of the Playstation 3's flagship games.

Now I love Uncharted 2 (not so much Uncharted: Drakes Fortune), but it makes me wonder, and worry that Uncharted 3 will be the last in the series OR that Uncharted 3 will be the last to be produced by Naughty Dog and will begin to be produced by another developer just like their other IP's (Crash Bandicoot being developed by Traveller's Tales and Radical Entertainment and the Jak series being produced by Ready at Dawn and High Impact Games). Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that these spin offs are good, or not (not quite sure, as I haven't played the spin offs) but it would be a shame for Naughty Dog to lose probably one of their most well loved franchises to another developer. Or could it be that Naughty Dog will actually want to work an a new IP after Uncharted 3. As seen above Naughty Dog create new IPs for Sony each generation, so will this time be any different.

I would love to hear what you guys think on this. Would you be happy that Naughty Dog move on to something new, or would you like them to produce another Uncharted after 3?

I would be happy for UC3 to be the last in the series as long as Naughty Dog kept supporting the multiplayer for the next couple of years with cash events and DLC.

Don't pull an update 1.05 this time round Naughty Dog!!!

Yeah they need to leave people wanting more instead of milking the franchise to death.

I want them to make a new Jak game, there isn't enough high quality platformers.

I'm up for a new Naughty IP after UC3...

It has been brought up before, but it's a good observation. It would be funny if they made Uncharted: Drake's Destruction Derby!
I wouldn't mind if Uncharted 3 was the last game in the series, I'm sure it'll go out with a bang. Uncharted 2 was fantastic, but I'd like to see Naughty Dog explore something new with their condsiderable talent.
(They have taken the half-tuck to its logical conclusion) It would be a bummer if other studioes started producing lackluster Uncharted sequels (like the Call of Duty-situation).
Though I guess the NGP Uncharted is developed by someone else? Oh no. :( NOT CANNON
(Disclamer:  Alright, alright, Bend seem like a capable developer)

I think you've overlooked a significant part of this pattern.

Anyone hyped for 'Uncharted Kart Racing'?

I saw an old interview with the lady from naughty dog, Brad asked her about this exact thing and she said that they would love to keep making uncharted games as long as people want them.
So UC3 wont necessarily be the last one, although I wouldnt be surprised if they take a break and do a Jak & Daxter  for ps3, and then do UC4 on the next Playstaton system

Darn I was actually going to mention the Uncharted Kart Racing :( Day one Purchase!

I think its fine if UC3 will be the last in the series. It's not a series i would like to see milked to the last drop.

I like Naughty Dog's philosophy with regards to their franchises. This industry is driven far too much by sequels. As much as I love Naughty Dog, I don't think the post-CTR Crash games would have been much better if they had developed them. They had reached the potential of the franchise, beyond that they would just be either iterating on the same formula, or making drastic changes would annoy fans of the franchise and would be far better as a new franchise. The same with Jak, the first three were great, but without just iterating on the same formula over and over, there was little room for expansion. I hope ND drop Uncharted after the third game and do something new. We already have Activision iterating on franchises over and over until everyone is bored of the same formula and the franchise collapses, we don't need other people doing that too. End the series on a high note and move on to something new.

I want UC3 to be the last in the series. They should move on to something new after that.

After Uncharted 3 I'd love me a Sully prequel. I wouldn't mind if the series did end with 3, and rather end with 3 than carry on to a never ending tripe train, but I would love me some spunky, coloured hair Sully adventuring. At the very least a story expansion DLC to Uncharted 3 with the very same concept, then I'd be very satisfied.

As soon as I saw this all I could think of was "NAUGHTY DOG" being shouted at me by my tv back in the day :') nostalgia

They should just put that in Uncharted 3 as an extra. It could be a cheap ass top down racer and would be a funny joke for the ND fans.

I think that is a great way of making money on a grounded franchise and making something new at the same time. I just hope they release a new Crash Bandicoot...

To me, it's a bit more characteristic of chasing fads. Platformers were big in the 90s, so Crash Bandicoot came out. That continued into the early 2000s, so Jak and Daxter came out. Then Grand Theft Auto III fucked things up for Naughty Dog, so come Jak II, the series became a bit more open world-y. Then, in...was it 2007 or 2008? I can't remember anymore. Anyway, at whatever time, third person cover based shooters were popular, so Uncharted.

i wouldnt mind if it ended at U3 and to be honest i cant see a U4...

In one of the E3 videos Travis McIntosh said that it's not the last time we'll see Drake.

I'd like a break after 3.

Hell if they said, "we are cancelling Uncharted 3 for an old school platformer" then I'd be way more excited.
