Melbourne Storm Salary Cap Breach.

I just heard news of the Melbourne Storms salary cap breach. While I was shocked to hear about the breach and the fact they they have been stripped of multiple titles and minor premierships, I also had the distinct feeling that they cant be the only club to have or be doing so. The (former now) chairman said in a statement that everybody does it and whether this is just a way of trying to excuse themselves for their actions or more of reality I cant help but feel if they came up with this way of getting around the system then others will have had to as well.

Its really human nature to find a way to win even if that means going outside the rules. It happens all the time, athletes are constantly failing performance enhancing drug tests across an untold number of sports. The fact we even need a drug testing systems show what some people will do to win. My favourite football (ie. soccer) team Juventus who play in the Italian top flight suffered a similar penalty when it was found that board members were arranging to have "favourable" referees for their matches.

One problem I have is that in some cases, the Juventus one maybe (its hard to know just how much the players knew), when its executives who have cheated the system is that the consequences really hurt the player who may not have known or had any involvement in what was going on, yet still have their hard earned titles, and in Melbourne's case their case top make any progress this season taken away from them. Whether the players knew that they were being paid outside of the salary cap may never be known but for those that weren't or didn't know it must really hurt and anger them that the titles and achievements they worked so hard to get have now been removed and tainted.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about "The darkest day in rugby league".
