Give Origin a Chance

With the recent furvor over the whole Crysis 2 and Alice off of steam and misguided blaming to EA. I feel like I have to say something about this to clarify the situation and help give Origin service a chance at competition. I'm not saying this like I'm a viral marketer for EA or Origin or I'm being paid by EA, I'm simply saying this as a gamer and a consumer that it would be a good idea to let Origin have a chance.

Origin=/=EA Download Manager (sorta)

Remember the terrible EA Download Manager service? Yes it was terrible, when your purchased the game you only had a limited number of downloads for a limited amount of time (1 Year I think), but you had the option to purchase "download insurance" which would allow you to download the game for a little bit longer of a time (3 Years I think). It sucked... This is not it. Origin allows you to download a game as many times as you like so long as Origin exist. In fact on a legal and objective level, Origin's download terms are actually better than Steam's! Crazy?

From Origin:

Q: Will my game download ever expire?
A: Digital download rights remain available for at least one year after purchase. Origin typically doesn’t retire games, and we’ve only retired around 10 of the 150 games we sell, and these have generally been because of the expiration of licensing rights. If you come across an issue, simply contact Origin Help and we'll reconfigure things for you.

From Valve:

C. Termination by Valve.

1. In the case of a recurring payment Subscription (e.g., a monthly subscription), in the event that Valve terminates or cancels your Account or a particular Subscription for convenience, Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide a prorated refund of any prepaid Subscription fees paid to Valve.
2. In the case of a one-time purchase of a product license (e.g., purchase of a single game) from Valve, Valve may choose to terminate or cancel your Subscription in its entirety or may terminate or cancel only a portion of the Subscription (e.g., access to the software via Steam) and Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide access (for a limited period of time) to the download of a stand-alone version of the software and content associated with such one-time purchase.
3. In the case of a free Subscription, Valve may choose to terminate or amend the terms of the Subscription as provided in the "Amendments to this Agreement" section above.

You see here? Origin guarantees that your games are viable for at least 1 year after your purchased it. Meaning nothing can possibly happen to your download until after 1 year you've purchased it. Steam on the other hand says they have the right and no obligation to terminate your game purchase AT ANY TIME. It does not matter if you bought the game tomorrow and the next hour it was pulled. They have the right and no legal obligation to guarantee your purchase of the game.

Don't trust EA or Origin? Then you still have reason to use it.

Have a physical box copy or even a steam copy of Dragon Age? Medal of Honor? Need For Speed? Then why don't you add it to Origin download service? You can redeem game codes just like on steam. (EVEN IF YOUR COPY IS A STEAM COPY!) Hey, now you don't have to put in a disc for Dragon Age or any other physical copy of EA's games to play it! Isn't that worth it? And why on earth would you ever add steam copies onto origin? Well if Steam decides to go kaput tomorrow forever and none of your games work you at least have a backup at Origin. It's better than nothing and why not have two digital copies at two different company locations in case either goes south? There's no hurt in doing that.

Just be sure it's not in this list of games that cannot be redeemed.
Yes it's a big list but EA is working to get it's back catalog working onto Origin's download service which will mean in the future your copy of Battlefield 2 will no longer require a disk.

And this doesn't detract from anything of your physical copy, your physical copy will work just like the physical copy, even after you added it to Origin. So if you don't trust EA or Origin, just buy a physical copy of the game and why don't you just add it to Origin anyways? Or even then buy a steam copy of the game and just add it to Origin for the heck of it, there's no harm in doing and it's a free insurance policy.

Competition=Good

I'm sorry to sound so cliche but it's true. There's nothing wrong with this.

The more places there are the more frequency for sales and the more there is to getting your game for the cheaper dollar. And for all the people crying about a doomsday future where every publisher has their own download client and you have to have a zillion things open to play your games.... It's not going to happen unless you let it happen...

Companies like money, and so they will throw all possible viable channels of Steam, Impulse, GOG, Brick and Mortor. To make as much money as possible to get the greatest sales possible. The only time where it makes any sense for a publisher to make their game exclusive to their service is if the number of people they would lose to make it exclusive out weighs the amount of money gained by keeping it exclusive and cutting out the middle man. That's a fine line and that doesn't include the relational implications that perhaps it doesn't work out or Valve decides to say no to EA publishing their games to Brick and Mortor any more. And at the same time it's a hard thing to judge without you willfully saying to the question "Would you still buy this game if it was only on Origin?" and saying "Yes." So if there's any time where EA is doing a powerplay to make something exclusive to Origin, don't play by their rules and send them a message by voting with your dollar. If you do that, we will live in a PC gaming era where we have choices galore of competitive, inexpensive online retail outlets.

So please give Origin a chance.

Nope, steam has built up a large amount of goodwill with me.  Even Valve when they launched it had a good rep.  Now look at EA, and all the choices they are making... I'm not ready to give them as much credit.

Just so you know, the dollar sign goes in front of the numerical value, as such--$50.

No one is bashing Origin because it's bad.  People that game on PC though don't want it because they already have an avenue for digital distribution and they don't want clog up their computer with yet another digital storefront.

The thing i remember about downloading anything from EA in the past, is that it was slow as hell. Im most likely going to end up getting Crysis 2 sometime tonight from seeing how its only 40 bucks. Can anyone comment on the speed?

You make a very good point. My expectations for Origin are still low but we shouldn't start criticising something before we've even seen what it has to offer.

For me to care about Origin, it has to become a competitive service with Steam. And by that I mean "Offers products at a similar or better quality than Steam", which seems like a pretty tall order. Otherwise it will be the next Impulse. No one likes Impulse, because it totally sucks.  The only reason I have it on my computer at all is because it's the only way I can update my Stardock developed games. I'll give it a chance when it delivers the goods, not before.

@insanejedi: Fair enough.  Reasoned argument, so counterpoints.
First on Origin <> EA Download manager
You are pointing out things I didn't care about about EA download manager.  For all purposes (for what I didn't like about the download manager) Origin is the download manager.  That is, I don't like the software interface.
On your second point-
I'm pretty much deciding to vote with my dollars and buy from Amazon- but actually that's neat, so I might try that out when my BF3 copy comes in the mail
On your third point-
1) I don't feel satisfied by what EA has said on Alice Returns and Crysis 2 that it was really a 'steam' problem and this was just PR spin control by EA.  Further, competition is totally good, so if EA wants to win my dollars in terms of purchasing revenue, give me the options I want (Steam for digital distro, other sources for phys distro) and let me look at what origin has to offer and purchase that way.  I'll repeat myself a bit, but if/when I decide to go get crysis 2 (finally) I'll probably order it off amazon and use origin so i don't have to put the CD in after install.  I understand EA has this argument that Valve is at fault or Crytek is at fault for Crysis 2 not being on steam, but I am a little jaded there- sorry if that makes my response non-sensical then.  But I'd have a heck of a lot easier time being willing to check out origin if I at least had another option for purchasing the software.

So I hear what you're saying, and the cd thing seems super cool, origin is still download manager for what I didn't like about it, and I'll go with competition being good (because it is) but it's only really good when you don't make your products exclusive.

EA has earned nothing but distrust and disgust when it comes to their dd services and policies. As much as I enjoy their games I hope their origin project is a miserable failure and they give up on that front.

I'm willing to give Origin a chance, but EA needs to bring the goods first. From what I've seen, the experience is Steam like, so it comes down to pricing and catalog. If they only use it to exclusively sell EA games, then I'll use it for EA games. But that's not the way to compete with Steam. And if they don't practice exclusivity, and the prices match, then I'll probably just buy it through Steam and register it on Origin.

Yeah, I have it installed and everything. There aren't any good deals yet though, and by good deals, I mean like those on Steam.

I bought Overlord for $1.25 on Steam which, to me, is crazy.

I used EA Download Manager (well, browsed really) the day Origin was announced. The program told me there was an update. After I installed it, there was literally no cosmetic or interface changes except the name. Nobody suggested Origin was not EA Download Manager though, so saying "people know so little" makes you look a bit presumptuous.

Except for the thousand of people who were whining on facebook, twitter, previous threads on giant bomb, the steam forums and even the ea forums. It was rather amusing to watch actually.

No big deal about Crysis 2 and Steam. I (regrettably) bought the game and I can still install it again if I want to. They've not taken it away from me, it's only for people that didn't buy it that can no longer purchase it.

I'm not opposed to Origin, I have no reason to be against it or for it.  If Steam starts doing things that irritate me then I'll probably switch to Origin but so far I haven't had any major problems with Steam that would make me consider a different service.  What happened with Crysis2 and Steam makes me a little concerned for the future of Steam but I'll cross that bridge when i come to it.  The exclusivity stuff does irritate me though.  The fact that if I want to get SW:TOR I have to go through Origin makes me less likely to buy it and makes me a bit cross with Origin.  I know Steam does that same thing with the Valve games but that was before I used any download service.   Also, Steam has a few bonus points for me because I got code for a free copy of Left4Dead 2 because I filled out a survey for Valve and that was before Left4Dead 2 had even been released.

The one thing that will put me in favor of Origin would be if I never EVER have to log into multiple services at the same time to play a game like Steam and Games for Windows.  That annoys me to no end.

I gave it a chance when it was "Download Manager" .. before it turned to Origin it was the same as it is now, just without the name "Origin" -.-. People know so little. Adding my EA Games from Steam to the Origin client is great though. It means I don't to fire up a needless client just to play a game(well, ea game). Origin is great enough for me to enjoy it, being open minded helps a lot sometimes instead of going "derp, I fear change, huuur hhuur 'drool' "

You won't have to. I don't have to launch any of the games I own from within Origin, and pretty much the only time I launch it is to add a game to it that I bought elsewhere. Just add Origin games to your Steam games list and they're with everything else you own. And if you've played an EA game online in the past 5 years, chances are you already have a username and password. What is there to keep up with?

I don't care for exclusive digital content, that's pretty much the only thing about this whole issue that bothers me. But, realistically, chances are if I want it bad enough I'll goto that service and get it there.

I'll give Origin a chance if it has awesome sales like Steam does. The only time I buy games or content on Steam is when there is a crazy deal. I still buy physical retail for the most part.

I actually have no problem with Origin, I just don't care to use it. It serves no purpose to me as I don't want the hassle of needing another application & account to play my games.

It will co-exist and I just won't use it like EA DM. I wanted to play 2142 the other day but couldn't bebothered to install EA DM and find my account info. I would have just re-bought 2142 on Steam if it was on there.

Competition=Good
