The most influental game in modern gaming: Quake

This topic got thrown up on Jeff's Vyouand he's right that anyone can make a case for any game, but the question made me think about what game probably made the biggest impact on all games that we play today. You could go the typical response of Tetris or Pong, but really how could you say that Tetris or Pong shaped the way that games like Modern Warfare is like today? Then thinking about it, I thought about Id's Doom, but then I remembered id's other game, Quake.

Now to be honest, Quake on a technical level today is absolutely nothing special. For the time it was a tour de force for graphical quality, and one of the first polygonal shooters on the market, but today the winding corridors of the level design, and the fast pace run and gun action has really been bread out of modern shooters today. So what makes Quake the most influental game if the gameplay wasn't something special?

It was this...

From Soldier of Fortune to Jedi Outcast, and from Portal 2 to Modern Warfare 2, the Quake engine has been there almost every step of the way, and will probably continue to shape how modern games are made for the foreseeable future. The idea of how games are written and how the engine was designed all the way back in 1996, still has it's roots in modern game engines like the Source engine today. I'm not a programmer, but talking to people who are, almost every shooter today has it's roots in Quake code.

So the next time you pick up a modern game, remember that without Quake and John Carmack, games would be very different today.
