GOTY 2012

  • I love being surprised by good games. I had known about FTL since before its Kickstarter, but as people often described it as a Rogue-like, I didn't really think it would appeal to me. I picked it up on a whim on STEAM sale, and it immediately sucked me in. There's so much depth to this game, and each upgrade path is incredibly well balanced against any other combination. What a fantastic testament to the value of Kickstarter and indie developers.

  • As a single player game, this is one of the most moving, artistic, beautiful games I've played in years. With the unique, anonymous multi-player component, it's pretty near to perfection. My biggest complaint is how short it is. But when you think about it, is it really a flaw if a game leaves you wanting more?

  • Hero Academy is, hands down, the best iOS game made yet. Out of all the game on this list, I've probably spent more time playing Hero Academy this year than everything else... combined.

  • Technically, this is a 2013 games since it's still in beta. But for a free to play game in open beta, the "beta" distinction is practically meaningless. As someone who doesn't "get" multiplayer shooters, this game is like a breath of fresh air to me. Where other shooters are mainly about twitch based, second-to-second action, in MWO the strategy of your build and the ability of your team to coordinate matter as much as your ability to pilot your mech in a match. Earning enough credits for a new mech is a slow process, and they need to dampen the learning curve a bit with some tutorials, and they need to flush out the map selection. But those issues aside, I feel like I'll be playing MWO for quite some time to come.

  • Confession, I'm only on episode 3 here. But the first two episodes were more than enough to earn The Walking Dead a position on my GOTY list.
