Dude YES.  But the link to the rules doesn't seem to work.

Edit: And I've never actually played before, so sorry in advance if I manage to fuck up somehow.

Posted by KaosAngel

...this sounds really complicated.  Cards, and monster cards?  x.x

Posted by The_Philosopher

My friend actually owns this game, it's pretty fun.
Posted by Izzyjam

Awesome. I've managed to bork all the links. They should be fixed now though :D

And yes, it's a little complicated, but it's immensely satisfying!

Edited by Driadon

Oh man, I love this game. I'm interested :D
Question: is this just the standard game, or have you thrown in any expansions?

Edited by WitchHunter_Z

I've played Arkham Horror before, and this game is stupidly amazing [I got my character perma-killed by rats on two separate occasions...]. I'm up for giving this a shot, though I'm a little confused on how play by post actually works.

Edit: Oh, and I want Darrell Simmons [Photographer]

Posted by CaptainTightPants

Never played these type of board games before, however i would be up for it although again i am not experienced with any of this.

The peeps at the Penny Arcade forums actually hosted one, years ago. Have a look through it here if you like. If they can make it work, we hella can too!

Also, to Driadon, just the standard game. I've one of the small expansions, but I figure playing just the stardard game would make things a little less complicated.

having never played a game like this before, i think i will sit it out
however, i will DEFINITELY be following along to see how it plays out
Posted by tranquilchaos

I looooove Arkham Horror! I don't know if I'd want to play it via the internet though.

Posted by Driadon
@Izzyjam: Ahhh, yeah I figured I'd ask just in case. When we get going with this, I'll set up my board at home and follow along with it, should we need a backup ;)
Posted by Make_Me_Mad

If this thing can get off the ground (and it better, get in here people!) then I'll go for Kate Winthrop as my character.  Anyone with Science! as a special ability is okay in my book.

Posted by Driadon

Oh and, randomize my investigator. I'm up for some surprises.

Posted by Make_Me_Mad

I'm guessing it'd be safe to assume that the game won't be starting for a while, so I suppose I'll be trying to re-unlock the Heather Beams on my new Silent Hill 3 file while waiting.  Should be well and proper crazy by the time it gets going.

Posted by angelfan91

Well, I'd love to play but is it ok if I've never played an intensive board game like this before?  If so sign me up!
Posted by Falconer

Just to be clear, this isn't a typical post-by-post game? You're just running it straight via the board game?

I'm hoping to get as many players as I can before starting. Probably going to wait until tomorrow to start the game proper.

Of course it's okay! Hopefully myself and the other players would be able to guide you through before you get the hang of things. At any rate, welcome aboard! Any preferences for which investigator you'd like to be?

I'm not sure what you mean by typical, but the idea is that the players would post what they'd want to do when it's their turn, and I'll provide updates in the form of texts and graphical updates of the gameboard as often as I can.
This game also has huge roleplaying potential, so you're more than welcome to RP your character if you'd like, though you don't have to.

I played that game once with a group of friends. It was really complicated... We lost to the game. It was depressing.

I was kinda hoping we could fill out the 8 player roster too, just out of appreciation for how chaotic it'd be, and because looking over the rules we're gonna need as many guys as possible if we don't want to all die horribly.

Well, good luck dude, Arkham Horror is an awesome game. I'd recommend (at least) the Dunwich expansion, Madness and Injury cards are pretty awesome, I've rolled them into my base game.

Posted by Jeust

I'm up for it too. And don't have any experience, besides an episode of Dexter's Laboratory about D&D.

Can I be Vincent Lee, the doctor?
Edited by TomWhitbrook

Man, I love arkham horror, but damn is that thing big. Even without the expansions it takes up significant space, but with them it's crazy. I dream of one day owning a table large enough for the full game.
I'm afraid that with the time zone difference I'd slow things down pretty bad, but I'll be interested in seeing how this turns out.

Posted by Motherfucker

I'm in :D

Posted by Izzyjam

Just one more spot to fill up! Go go go go go!

Posted by Make_Me_Mad

After reading all of the rulebooks, I have to say that I'd be willing to do a game with the expansions included sometime.  Also, people, remember to choose your investigators after you sign up.

Posted by Izzyjam

It's been about 24 hours, and we're one person short. I guess I'll join in as a player as well, then. As for those that haven't picked their investigators, I'm just going to assume that they want random pick. Picture of the starting board coming up soon - stay tuned!

Posted by Izzyjam

The game has officially begun! Check the first post for details! Currently waiting for response from all the players!

Posted by WitchHunter_Z

Ah shit, Azathoth. I look forward to being devoured by The Idiot God.
As it's just the upkeep phase, I'll set my stats even though I'm not first player.

Speed/Sneak: 3/1
Fight/Will: 3/3
Luck/Lore: 3/3
+$1 from Trust Fund

Posted by Make_Me_Mad

Azathoth?  Damn, I was rooting for a slugfest with Shub Niggurath to end the game.

Speed / Sneak: 4 / 2
Fight / Will: 2 / 2
Lore / Luck: 4 / 2

Speed / Sneak:  4 / 2
Fight / Will: 2 / 2
Lore / Luck: 4 / 2

@Jeust:  Sorry dude, I think you were looking at the wrong character. I've drawn Carolyn Fern for you; but if you'd like to play as any of the other non-expansion characters, that's cool too, just let me know right now!

No. Let it be then. :)

I like my character. Thanks!

What is that  Focus characteristic?

No. Let it be then. :)   I like my character. Thanks!  What is that  Focus characteristic? "

Well, for starters, you can have your skillsets of Speed/Sneak, Fight/Will, and Lore/Luck set to any of the number sets available to that character, as seen on the card Izzyjam linked- your Focus allows you to move a skill slider by however much focus you have in the upkeep phase of each turn.  This being the first turn, you can set them however you want, but to move them on any other turn would take up focus.

Edit: Also, just as a basic idea of what they all do- Speed lets you move farther in the movement phase, and Sneak gives you a higher chance to evade monsters you encounter during the movement phase.  Failing to evade a monster means you take damage, and lose your movement points.

Fight deals with combat against monsters, basically allowing you to roll more die for a higher chance of killing it off- failing in combat means that you take damage, and the monster will still be there to deal with on the next turn.  Killing it bags you a monster trophy.  Will deals with your Sanity, giving you more die to roll against a monster to prevent you from losing your mind when combat starts.

Lore has to do with spell checks, giving them a higher chance to succeed.  Luck is used mainly for the encounters at each location, but you never know when it might be important.

Posted by Izzyjam
@Jeust: Focus is how many "steps" you can change your stats during upkeep phase. Since this this the first one ever, just choose your stats however you like according to the pairing on your sheet! For example, if you want to max out on speed, then you'd choose Speed/Sneak as 3/0. If you find that later on, you need to sneak around monsters more, you can move that back 2 "steps" (your focus number), to 2/1, then finally 1/2. The same goes for Fight/Will and Lore/Luck.
A thing to keep in mind is that the focus is how many steps you can move IN TOTAL, counting all your stats.

Damn I would love to learn to play something like this. I wish my friends weren't douches about board games.

Posted by CaptainTightPants

 I will go for
Speed/Sneak  2/3
Fight/Will 1/2
Lore/Luck 5/2

Edited by Make_Me_Mad
@MrKlorox:

Well, if someone drops out of the game, feel free to hop in!

Edit: While searching for a larger version of the game board, I discovered that there is a modified, Touhoufied version of Arkham Horror.  Is there nothing that Touhou has not done?

Posted by Catfish666

Just when I thought Giantbomb was awesome as it is, we now have uprisen crazy cultists and sanity losses? Sweeeeet!

Great idea Izzyjam, I applaud you! Too bad I was too late to get into the game, but maybe there'll be a next time?

Gonna get followed by doing awesome stuff like that anyway :)

Posted by Izzyjam
@Catfish666:  Thank you very much! And like Make_Me_Mad said, you're more than welcome to hop in if someone decides to drop the game!

Thanks! I've understood now. :)

then:

Speed / Sneak:  0 / 3
Fight / Will: 3 / 2
Lore / Luck: 2 / 4
Posted by Izzyjam
@Jeust:  Just so you know, with a speed score of 0, you won't be able to move around at all! How about I go ahead and change it to a 1/2 instead? :)

I'll sneak as a rock. :p

 Speed / Sneak:  1 / 3 then ^^
Posted by TomWhitbrook

Oh, you drew Azathoth?
Well, it was nice knowing y'all.

Posted by Catfish666
@Izzyjam:     Ok, just as a heads up I reside in +2 GMT timezone, in Finland, actually about to hit the hay as of writing this.

Haven't played AH before either, good deal of other board games though, checked out the basic rules already already.

Anyways, I'll try check the thread every now and then, interested to see how fast you end up as Old One lunch :D

Have a good game!
Edited by Make_Me_Mad
@TomWhitbrook:
Pfft, we can take him.  Well, theoretically.  In the sense that we have a chance to win as long as he never, you know, gets to do anything.
Edited by Driadon
@Izzyjam:
Speed: 6 / Sneak: 1
Fight: 3 / Will: 2
Lore: 2 / Luck 1

and....OH DEAR GOD AZATHOTH...well I guess he does give the lowest of the bonuses to monsters, and his doom counter is humongous.
Hey, Anyone want my Tommy Gun? It's completely useless to me with my other two weapons handy. Let me know and I'll try to catch you come Movement phase.
Posted by Izzyjam
@Driadon: I swear, that was entirely random. The game hates you. At all times.
I remember this once when we needed 1 more hit to win the game during the final battle. It was down to my roommate's single investigator with 7 dice to roll. I think you know where this is going :P

My first thought looking through the item lists was "Oh, awesome, someone has one of those Warding statue things.  That'll be awesome if we have to fight the Ancient One... Which one of those did we get agai- DAMNIT."
