Last time I talked to him (which was around August or so), he was just travelling around after the Spicy Horse closure. He seemed pretty down about Akaneiro not really doing big numbers. I had mentioned the Otherlands thing, but there's nothing he could really say about it...and what he did say sounded saddening as well. Honestly, though, you can just look at the Kickstarter update page for Alice: Otherlands and you'll get the idea pretty quickly.

The guy has always been hella ambitious about everything he does. I'm hoping he finds his footing again soon. Every time we have correspondence, it always seems to come around a dark time for him. I remember how bummed he was about all the Oz stuff that he wanted to do but couldn't get it to take off. He's probably the only other person I've ever met (well, we've only ever known each other over the internet through e-mails) that has as deep of a passion for the world of Oz as I do.

Man, I need to get back on this game. The new season of League, for some reason, has me by the nutsack.

That trailer was fairly boring, told us little to nothing, and it honestly didn't feel atmospheric to me at all. I've watched Blade Runner at least 50 times in multiple variations. It's one of my favorite movies ever.

This, so far, looks like it desperately WANTS to recapture what Blade Runner did, but I don't think that it will. I hope I'm wrong.

@addfwyn: people like to call everything a souls game, i dont see much comparison personally. Its free so pretty easy to try yourself, i would say its more of a rouge light like whatever where characters are disposable. Multiplayer is more like mgsv but way less stressful and the entire gameplay loop is more run based like an arpg(loot grind isnt as involved as those though). Maybe combat is a bit souls like but its much simpler.

In terms of control style, focus on animation priorities and 1v1 combat scenarios, and difficulty in terms of how hard everything can hit you, it's a Souls-like for sure. There's a lot going on in this game that ISN'T a Souls game, but it PLAYS like a Souls game, which is what I think constitutes the Souls-like tag more than anything.

@jakob187: Nuclear Throne, Hearthstone and Warframe all definitely didn't hit in 2016!

Nuclear Throne was out of early access on December 5th of last year, and I didn't play it until 2016.

Whenever this comes up I feel the need to inform people that Nuclear Throne launched in an unfinished state and didn't get patched on consoles until literally nine months later. Further more the patch did not even address any of the issues affecting couch co-op and likely will never see another patch. Last I heard the Vita version was even more messy and still has not received a patch. I played the hell out of NT this year and it will still likely be on my top ten list, but Vlambeer is on my shit list until they learn to apply some quality control on their games.

I only played it single player, and I enjoyed the ever-loving hell out of it, so I don't know.

Hearthstone released new expansions, and that's all I need to keep putting it on my list every year.

Warframe did a MASSIVE overhaul of all kinds of shit, enough to the point that I felt comfortable with putting it on here.

Also, my top 10 lists are never conventional lists of "only games that came out in 2016." I posted up a blog that explains all of this, as I do every year. Trust me - if Marvel Heroes' upcoming massive rework is good, that game will most likely be on my GOTY 2017 list.

@jakob187: the way the multiplayer is handled i wonder if cross play would be an issue?

That IS true. Now I'm really curious.

I'll play this game on literally anything they put it on. I would just REALLY like to have it on PC so I can see how it runs without all the framerate issues.

In no particular order, my top 10:

  • Battlefield 1
  • Let It Die
  • Overwatch
  • The Witness
  • Doom
  • Dark Souls 3
  • Devil Daggers
  • Nuclear Throne
  • Hearthstone
  • Warframe

Game I wish I had played more of so I could include it on this list:

  • Stardew Valley
  • Stardew Valley
  • Stardew Valley

Seriously, I feel like a horrible fucking person that I actually played Superhot and didn't play Stardew Valley at ALL!

I'll have a blog up sometime this week detailing all of this.

With the amount that they have been saying that the game has styyyyyyyyyle, I could see it being in on the list.

Personally, though, I'm kind of hoping that they've played a substantially larger amount of the game before considering it for the lists. Based on the information they were throwing around in the Quick Look, there's a bit they still didn't know at the time of recording that, and that game has a lot of opening up it needs to do for them.

I reeeeeeeeeeally don't know how to feel about this. Then again, I don't know how this affects overall gameplay, scenarios and setups, character advancement, etc. When someone says "open-world," I immediately imagine that they are trying to be Skyrim or Grand Theft Auto, as those are the two primary examples of "open-world." However, if we're talking in a more limited open-world capacity like Dragon Age: Inquisition, I could get behind that idea. However, I don't know how the Warriors setups of objectives and stuff translates over to it.

We'll see. I'll keep an open mind.
