This is too much the best time to be playing video games! Too many games!

I am no longer a "gamer"

That's right. I opt out of being called that, because I don't fit into that space anymore. Let us check what the criteria are for being called a gamer.

  • Like to play games, and do so almost every day.
- I do. Some days I only play for half an hour or so, but I mostly play more than that. And if I don't play at all I most likely read about games at least. So I got this point covered.
  • Know things about almost every platform of gaming.
- I do. I read a lot about gaming in general, so I know more and more about this every day. A "Check" on this point as well.
  •  Own at least one gaming platform.
- I own a gaming PC, Xbox 360, Wii and a DSXL. So I got this as well.
  • Bitch and moan about a variety of minor things having to do with gaming.
- Hmm. I don't do this.
  • Be extremely negative towards something you have never tried because it is new.
- I don't do this either...

So there you have it. To be called a gamer these days it seems you have to be negative and bitch about things. Let me write down a few of the things I have seen around the internet the past year(s) or so:
- [insert popular game title] suck! It is the worst game ever to come out!
- They should just stop making Kinect. It just doesn't have any use at all. I'm not going to buy it, so why bother?
- Consoles are for retards. If you cannot use a computer, you shouldn't be called a gamer.
- Causal gamers aren't gamers. I wish they all died, 'cause then we might get better games on the Wii.
- The Wii is a waste of space. Nothing but shovelware and casual crap no-one wants.
- Dead Rising 2 is going to suck because it has a time limit and the saving is crap.
- Steam is a cancer in gaming. I hope it crash and burns so that we non DRM people win.

I am not saying it is wrong to dislike something. You can hate Halo all you like, you can think the Wii is stupid. But if you cannot get it into your skull that someone think the opposite, then you are stupid. I don't like Metal Gear Solid. I don't like Final Fantasy. You do? Great! We are different then. We have different taste when it comes to games. That is what so many gamers these days seem to forget.

*sigh*
I hereby opt out of all that. I am no longer a gamer. I'm just a guy who like to play video games now and then. I love Steam, I love my Xbox and I am hopeful that Kinect will turn out good. I love the time limit in DR, and I am sure I will love it in DR2 as well. I don't like DRM, but it is not going to stop me buying games I really want.
I am optimistic about things, which means I don't fit into the gamer mold these days.  Everyone else who are optimistic about things are free to join me in having fun. Which gaming is really about.

I guess this whole blog post is a bit ironic. Here I am, bitching and moaning about being sick of gamers bitching and moaning. But I just had to get this rant out.

I think as you grow out of your teens you become less and less willing to just hate on everything and open your mind a little. At least, that's what balanced people do! I agree that 'gamers' have some pretty harsh stigmas, but contrary to what the internet implies, hating is not a prerequisite!

I'm gamer that hardly play games because I'm always broke. I have job and everything, but I have to buy food, clothes and etc. The last game I bought was Modern Warfare 2, Borderlands, and Mass Effect ( again: \ ) back in late 2009. The next time I will buy game is later this month, next month or my birthday that coming up soon.

i hope the kinect turns out well too, but seeing as the psmove and the kinect require you to be 8 feet away from your TV, i dont have the space at my place to do that. most families that actually have the space at their house to do that have gaming consoles in kids rooms or actual game rooms that may or not be able to house that. gamespot, giantbomb, and g4 have all said the same thing about this. so, idk if they will be viable on a wide scale. we will see.

@Vinchenzo: I'm not saying I am above anyone. I just think the word "gamer" is silly in itself, and if that is what all the negative people call themselves, then I don't fit in. You don't see people who like movies call themselves "filmists"? No other group has a name for themselves as gamers have, and the very fact that we have that make it seem like gamers are a different kind of person than normal people. Which is retarded.
Also, I am almost too skinny for my own good, I am nowhere near awkward and I don't have a lisp. I don't have acne, I don't use glasses and I talk perfectly fine with girls, my girlfriend and all the rest of the fairer sex. So no, I am not "one of you", as you put it.

@SpiralStairs: Yet the same people who complain about "bad" things in the gaming world keep buying CoD, keep paying high amounts of money for minor DLC, keep ragging on things that aren't "the same shit as before" etc. So it doesn't really work now, does it? If we don't want the same shit every year, why didn't more people buy Psychonauts when it came out? What about other innovative and good games? Why not stop bitching about how much something you have never tried suck, and instead buy actual good games that try and change something you think you don't like about those games?

@TotalEklypse: If we have to call us something, then that is better. Although a lot harder to say. But I am completely fine with not being identified as some special kind of person just because I happen to like video games. I also like to papercraft, but that doesn't mean I am a papercraftist.

Anywho, seems a lot of people take this way to seriously. This person got the gist of it:
@SumDeus said:
" Just play games and have fun. Who cares what you call yourself? "

But then again, this blog was not about what we call ourself. It was about how negative gamers are today towards everything new and unfamiliar. So let us discuss that instead. Why do people hate Kinect before it comes out? Why do people hate the Wii because it beckons to people who usually don't play games? Why do people hate Halo with such a passion that they hope the Xbox will fail because of it? In short, why are people who play games so damned negative towards everything?

@Durandir:  Yeah, the people who play what they like and don't judge based solely on sales/reviews are the true gamers I suppose.

@Durandir: it was sarcasm. nothing more. labels or those who complain about labels seem to need to be defined by something. regardless if they can admit it or not.

I'm always optimistic and enthusiastic about new technology related to video games.  That's why I'm excited for Kinect and Move, even though I know that there won't be a lot of games that I would want to play that use those devices primarily.  I don't know if I'll buy Kinect any time soon, but I like the concept of it very much so.

It's true.  A lot of people who post on gaming forums are cynical and tend to be negative towards a whole bunch of stuff, especially the games that are deemed popular like Modern Warfare 2 or Halo and they feel the urge to constantly remind people why they think those games suck so much.  I'm not one of those people.  I always find an aspect of a game I enjoy a lot and I look more at the positives of a game without ignoring the negatives, of course.  I like games and I don't have some type of elitist attitude that would make me rage and bash the games that are "unworthy" or people who play games differently than I do.

Maybe I just don't need that intense of an experience to derive enjoyment from games compared to other gamers.  I had few problems with Modern Warfare 2's campaign and I enjoyed it very much.  Then I see how the majority of forum-goers and even professional reviewers who think the campaign was utter crap and was a total waste of time.  That's fine if they thought that way, but I very much enjoyed it even if it wasn't the best thing I've ever experienced.  I don't let their opinions affect mine and I just stay optimistic towards those things even if most of the people think otherwise.

@Durandir: Naah, you're still  a gamer.  You just aren't a crazy radical.  Those last points describe fanboys and the guys that think level of skill in playing games equals right to playing a game.  All that "GTFO NOOB!" bullshit needs to stop.  Don't lose hope.

@Durandir:   You met 3 out of 5 criteria you posted for supposedly being a gamer, and chose the 2 most subjective points on the list to define what a gamer is?

@Junkerman: Of course! Or I just wanted to make my rant a bit more interesting to read, so I threw in a bullshit list of what a gamer is. You may pick what you want.

I don't care what silly labels idiots and fanboys try to attach to the title of "gamer", a gamer is simply someone someone who plays video games, nothing more, nothing less.

I think, in general, negativity's in the minority but it just sticks with you longer. You can have 20 people compliment you one day but it's that one motherfucker that goes "yo, asshole" that ya remember.
Normal people are either constructive or stay out of it, attention whores are obnoxiously negative and i believe it's because too many normal people pay it too much attention.

You have a flimsy stereotype for your definition of "gamer", which is your problem.  Gamers play games.  If you're playing every day, you play a lot.  You seem to enjoy it.  The only points you're missing aren't unique to gaming (bitching about little things and hating things you haven't tried).

If you don't want to think of yourself as a gamer anymore, just don't.  You don't need to justify yourself to an anonymous audience.
