Cave Story: Have YOU overlooked this retro gem?

I played two games and a demo last night, and though Zeno Clash (demo) and Just Cause 2 (game) are great in their own right, the one that really continues to wow me is Cave Story. I downloaded this after hearing all the low-level hype and watching the Quick Look on it. Not only am I having a blast with the throwback art style and gameplay, but after getting stuck for the first time, I've discovered via a walkthrough (yes, I am ashamed) that there are multiple branching paths to be found.

Is anyone else enjoying this as much as I am or did it go largely overlooked in lieu of larger profile blockbuster releases?

Cave story is so overrated. I'm so sick of hearing about it.

It's pretty good, yeah. Pretty sure that, by now, everyone's heard of it, though.

Yes I have actually over looked it.  I don't intend to go back and play it but I do appreciate it's value and effect on gaming history.

Yes, it was pretty good, but I agree, it is quite overrated. IMO, Zeno Clash is far better.

Yeah that game is DAMN good, I've played through (The FREE original) and I keep finding new things

I downloaded the freeware versiona  while back but I hated the PC keyboard controls, like most games. Now that I have the Sixaxis driver for my laptop though then I will definitely try it out again.

Cave Story is a very good game, and I did overlook it myself.

I've downloaded the free version and got about half way through, but i'm stuck on that super hard boss with four sets of wheels who keeps changing direction. I did have loads of fun up til that point though and will give it another go when i get some free time.

I overlooked the high price.  Too many of these little games are expensive for what is basically a ROM with hype.  If it were $5-$8 I'd be more inclined, but it's too expensive for a game that looks fun but will probably be played once or twice.  Look at Steam, many of the little games like Flotilla, Beat Hazard and Audiosurf are less than $10 and do far more than copy old games and call it retro.

This also gets back to the lack of demos for these games on Wiiware and PSN, where a demo is rare and you're expected to gamble your $10-$15 on a game to see if it's worth it.

Got the Wii version and beat it in a couple days.  I had a blast playing through the game.

@DukeTogo:  you should just get the free PC version, it still looks pretty good.

It's a great game. The only time it got a bit dull was about 3/4 of the way through, but it picked up again in the last fourth.

Edit: I played the freeware version on the computer.

Cave Story is free on PC.

Buy fucking Zeno Clash.

People who go into a game's forum to bitch about how much it's overrated have way too much time on their hands.
