Over the last months I have been developing pretty sizable PSVita library thanks to PS+. I am also very interested in trying out Persona 5 Golden and Soul Sacrifice. Altogether, this has made me very attracted to vita as a future purchase. Upon hearing rumors of Vita been discounted at certain Sony stores this week (a rumor making rounds on the net), I embarked on finding a great bargain from the depths of the Internet. Until I remembered about the propitiatory memory card... and then I remembered why I did not buy it in the first place.

My first impressions of vita were that it is very slick and I would not mind paying $250 for it. I soured on it when they started coming out with the propitiatory bullsh*t. Seriously, $100 for a 32GB memory card...

Now I fear some crazy Sony bullsh*t is lurking in PS4's future. They are just waiting in the depths of Sony HQ....biding their time and just when my hype will be over the moon they will unleash it to devour my soul. What do you guys think? Are they crazy enough to try some zany scheme for PS4? Is Microsoft going to try an even zanier scheme? I want all the doom and gloom predictions....oh and keep the rhetoric light, I don't want to go into deep depression due to this conversation.

@djou: Dude everyone wants rebooted Siphon Filter, but Sony'd studios have a lot of leeway when it comes to picking the game they want to do. Even if Bend does make a Siphon Filter it would probably be for Vita. It has become their de facto portable games studio.

From the presentation it seemed like they would like to get a lot of indie developers on PSN. Does that mean Slender Eight Pages like games on PS4, I don't know, but indie guys sure know how to make compelling new IPs.

@djou: An RPG from first party would be nice. But I don't think any of the first party studios would be any good at them just by looking at their library. But hopefully Atlas and Level-5 will take care of the JRPGs. I would not be actually surprised if one of the rumored new IPs at Microsoft is RPG, that would be cool.

@turtlebird95:I thought I was sick of God of War too, until I played the demo. God damn, it shows were all that sweet sony's money went.

The God of War III director Stig Asmussen is working on a new IP, that has been known for some time.

Naughty Dog give me a new IP.

Bend give me another rocking vita game.

San Diego Studio actually does a lot of supporting role other than just make MLB the show. They are currently helping idol minds with Warrior's Lair for PS3 and vita (a quick wiki check).

Japan Studios has a two teams. Team ICO hopefully is still at it on Last Guardian and Project Siren is hopefully working on Gravity Rush II.

Polyphony is working on Gran Turismo that is a given, as such much as I want them to work on something other than Gran Turismo, it just makes money.

London is probably doing Wonder book II (seriously F that).

Media Molecule is smoking a lot of pot along with working on a fantastic (hopefully) new IP.

There is also rumor that Guerrilla is actually three team studio. One working on Mercenary, second working on Shadow Fall and yet another working on a new IP. I personally don't think Sony shut down Zipper just to have Guerrilla make more shooters. I also think that Wipeout is going to continue without Psygnosis. It does have a strong albeit small following among core PlayStation fans.

Look at the games that are free and on sale on PS+. Does any of them interest you? If yes, then you will find that PS+ is the best gaming service next to steam. If no, then its $50 that you can keep. If you have PS vita and plan on buying PS4 then it adds further value.

For me, I would have never tried Vanquish had it not been on PS+, but man now I am totally addicted to it.

I would be a cool feature if they let you select and actually support verified identities.

  • Anonymous mode: You use your fake name and play against fake and real names.
  • Don't care mode: You use your real name and play against real and fake names.
  • Real name mode (aka anti-bullshit mode): You use your real name and play only against real names.

Then there should be a possibility to simply switch between login-modes as you go. That would be really cool.

I agree with the idea of anonymity when interacting with strangers online. Sony is certainly not taking that away when it comes to online gaming. However, there is something to be said about the idea of using real names. It is not very easy to moderate communities as big as XBLA and PSN. Not to mention that neither would to be willing to spend lot of money on it. The three-teared system proposed by jgf seems to address some of the issues.

Where?

http://blog.us.playstation.com/

Listen to the PS4 unveiling video, it starts at about 25:56. Upon listing to it again I realized that they are keeping anonymous user names for online gaming, but things such as Facebook integration will probably force you to use real names for sharing game play and other social interactions.

No it doesn't.

98% of the time I use a fake name. Only my private Google account uses my real name.

according to Google my name is Blast Hardpeck. So no.

I guess you guys are right. I got a little too optimistic there!

During Sony's PS4 unveiling they mentioned very quickly that the new PSN will require players to use their real name. This might be the simplest most elegant solution to stop unnecessary racist and sexist slurs that have plagued online gaming this generation. I would like to hear your thoughts on using real name on PSN and during online gaming with strangers.
