G.O.G or tell me what random crap to play.

New Laptop is a pc, so now i'm thinking of all the games I haven't played that i really should have done, or the ones I've forgotten to play.
Steam is great, but sometimes you want to play Gabriel Knight or Baldurs Gate 2. So GOG is where it's at for me.

So why am I writing this? Well..if you're reading this..and you must be...I hope. I'd like some suggestions as to what I should be raiding GOG for.
Now, Gabirel Knight and Baldurs Gate and Planescape are already on my todo list...as would Freelancer 2 if it worked in windows 7.

I would appreciate any other advice though. Arcanum?
oh and take it as read that I've played Fallout 1 and 2 already.

In other news, even though I have them on Steam, I had to go and buy the Crysis and Shogun 2 discs..otherwise i'd never get to play them. Our connection is whacky at home at the moment and I really want to play some Shogun, so i traded in Bulletstorm and that covered me fine. Shame it's £10 cheaper on amazon anyway.
Also got Stalker on the way..should be an interesting weekend. If the internet works and i can reg these games. ooooo drm and pcs, I'd forgotten all about you in my mac induced haze.
ah well.

Pre-show waiting..yawn.

I'm just typing this before we start recording our podcast for this week (take a look at HS21's blog..it'll be there at some point..hopefully..this time)
We're just waiting on HS21 and Turboman to turn up..considering HS stated the times to turn up, she's being a fashionably late bitch.

A decent team for MvC3 is tough, at least for me. I tend to like fast and nimble characters (I use X-23 all the time) but if your opponent gets you in a combo you die pretty quickly. Phoenix is awesome but dies faster than Akuma with a cold. I used to run with Viewtiful Joe, Wolvie and X-23 but that only gets you so far and wolvie and x are essentially (well genetically bar a lack of y chromosome) the same..so I've been mucking around with Wesker and Chris. Wesker is a lot of fun but he reminds me of ..shit, the dude with chains and green hair in Blazblue..mind has gone blank..but yeah, fun to play as but hard to master. I think I'll work on Wesker. Still anyone who rolls with Hulk, Sentinel and Storm will tear me apart. Sigh.
Yes I'm shit..but I hardly have the time to really work on it unfortunately.

Livejournal is very popular in Russia apparently....hmm odd. You'd have thought that they'd be more into myspace. ah well.

Heh it's been a while since my last blog hasn't it? Well not much has changed except im back in the UK, I've got a job and I'm considering getting a new laptop as my MPB had a screen fault (well a logic board fault) again. Apparently it's a recognised fault and it gets fixed for free..but it's beginning to piss me off to be honest. I've had to re-do the OS a couple of times this past 6 months and those steam sales make me want to have a PC..especially because i keep buying stuff i can'y play (come on..crysis for £4.99..how can you not?) So I'm looking at decent gaming laptops....mostly Alienware isn't it really. Tres Cher but you gotta pay to play. Thank god for £200 a week pay.

GDC is a bit shit apparently..well this year at least. It was nice to SWERY though wasn't it? Sweet guy. His face when he saw the cards that some enterprising dude made. 'Sugoi' indeed...yeah i can't be arsed to look up the Romanji for awesome in Japanese. I'm lazy like that. I've still only done part of Deadly Premonition on my xbox. I keep getting..

ooo starting. Perhaps i'll do a post or during thingy.
 Nah..We're ordering takeout now.

Sigh, we need to get our shit together. It's nigh on impossible to be fair. We're dealing with at least 4 different time zones and people do actually have some sort of social life. Well at least thats what they tell me, I haven't had a social life in a while. Difficult when you live up a mountain in the middle of nowhere. Didn't have Guinness either. Fucking nightmare.

Oh now we're dissing the Turks. I like Turkey, its a nice country and it's warm. Warmer than here at least. Surprised i haven't got frostbite to be honest. Speaking of which that Battlefield 3 trailer was nice wasn't it? Looked very smart and was mostly technically correct according to some website run by off duty soldiers. I like Battlefield games..can't stand COD. It's like you're on meth the whole way through

HS is here. time to roll.

edit:
We've just finished.
In short
bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahah recording stuff is difficult.
Here's a little insider knowledge, behind the curtain if you will, of the podcast.
We actually have 4 more podcasts that never saw the light of day, including one we recorded where HS and I were playing Minecraft while casting
'Shit it's a skeleton...shit I'm dead and lost my diamond axe'...well that was mostly HS. We also had one, and I'll be honest most of these were my fault, where the trail limitations kicked in and some bitch said 'this is a trial version' every 3 seconds over the recording...which was sad as it was the best one we did especially with Axxol's awesome Louis Armstrong impression at the end there. We'll try and get him to do another rendition at some point.
As the host of a barnyard full of crazy animals, its not easy to keep control. People generally talk over each other or take long pauses and then start off again. Quite a few times i get caught that way.. I'll be saying 'okay, and what about you Derek?' and HS will talk for another 10 minutes about how emergent the gameplay is in Far Cry. I should point out that's just a hypothetical example and never actually happened. Derek wasn't there.  Nevertheless it's fun. I think that comes across rather well in the podcast..especially after the fifth listen, i just can't get enough of Turboman's dulcet tones...but i think we generally have fun and that comes across. The randomness of it works pretty well too. It helps that any member of the..community isn't the word, perhaps mob? is willing to be a guest on the show. Bringing something new to the table, be it lesbians, Staples, Danish accents or Louis Armstrong impressions is always awesome and takes us off into weird places. Also the question segment tends to be fucking hysterical..seriously, Zombiepie, Organiclastic and you other guys. Where the hell do you get those ideas from?

Anyway, this is kind of a short note to you guys to say thanks for making this insanity enjoyable.  Though I think Christonice summed up the podcast perfectly by comparing it to the sound of a pair of copulating felines. My biggest thanks should be to the staff of the Luchazine. Without you guys, this would never have happened. So if you wan't to blame someone, blame Goran_p.

Now, I wonder if this podcast will actually ever get put up.
Apparently not. After crash the recording got lost. It was a classic guys, we managed to insult most of the western hemisphere at different stages throughout..including Mubarak and Charlie Sheen. Bree Olsen tweets also made a come back..or should that be cum back?
okay I'm done.

A Stalking Torchlit Floors of swarming Inceptions (spoilers)

Breaking with tradition, first up is my review of Inception..which i literally just watched.
SPOILERS..cause I know people are very protective of their...experience?
For those who can't be arsed, or have problems with my lyrical styles, here's my review in a nutshell:
Not bad, but there are some major flaws that stop it from being excellent. 3*s.

No Caption Provided
I should note that I saw this with my 14yr old nephew, my 67yr old mother and my 71yr old father, I'm 25..So you've got a good range of ages there. I was the only one who walked out relatively impressed, my mother thought it was a mess, my father (unsurprisingly for him) slept through it, and my nephew thought it was okay but he got bored.

Review (again..massive spoiler warning)
Inception has a pretty simple premise, Cobb (Leo) and Arthur (JGL) are extraction specialist, they go into people's dreams and retrieve specific information from the target's subconsciousness.  We're never told how they get the actual information out, I suppose Cobb memorises it, but that is never explained..he just finds a piece of paper in the dreamscape and thats all they need. Anyway after the initial, and completely pointless, dream dive into Sato? to get some information, Cobb and Arthur are roped into pulling what is known as an 'Inception' (one assumes the opposite of extraction would be incision, but perhaps that wasn't cool enough for a name. INCISION..well fair enough) where instead of extracting ideas, they place them in the subject..hopefully making him think that the idea was his own.  There's a lot of hullaballoo about multiple layers of dreams...like an onion the subconscious dreamer has multiple levels of dreams, and the further down you go, the more dangerous and the more malleable the subject gets. Of course the subject has a defence mechanism, like white blood cells, the subconscious will create projections to hunt the interlopers down.
So essentially we have a heist movie mixed with the matrix.

Lets start off with the good:
The cinematography is superb, each shot is well placed and the action scenes flow extremely well. The CGI shots of the collapsing limbo? subconsciousness of Cobb reminded me of the original ending of Planet of the Apes for some reason...well all desolate beaches do i think...i'm not much of a expert on films so, I'll just say that I though it was well shot.
JGL and his action scenes: I'm a big Gordon-Levitt fan..even GI Joe, though Brick remains one of my favourite films...and he played his part well. TBH he doesn't really do much more than explain architecture in dreamscapes to a girl who i swear is Lucy in the Narnia series, and grumble at Cobb every so often. However his action sequences in the hotel were mind blowing, especially considering that was all done on set with no post. Highlight of the film..by far.
Music and the kick: Great ideas...using triggers to wake people up, be they musical cues or physical impact. I especially liked the use of Edith Piaff's classic and how it's heard throughout the movie at different speeds to prepare you for certain critical moments.
The layers: Layers upon layers upon layers. For the most part it was utilised well, and I was left wandering how far the rabbit hole went.
The ending: Open ended and up to interpretation...there aren't always happy endings, or are there?

The Bad:
The 'wait isn't this in the a james bond movie' Ice level: WTF was that? Compared to the initial concrete levels of subconsciousness we get treated to Cillian Murphy's Siberian montage. I understand that the deeper you go, the more dream like it would become, and perhaps reflect his personality..but it was far too disjointed and the scenes with everything blowing up were just silly. It was like a level from MW2....actually it probably was a level from MW2.
Gravity: So, falling off a bridge = loss of gravity in second layer. Fine. Why not the third layer? Too far down and they don't notice it? ...convenient.
Cobb: I don't care about his problems with his wife and her need to turn up to ruin everything...I'm not a big Dicaprio fan, though Shutter Island was okay...but this just annoyed me. A sloppy Deus Ex Machina and bad acting.
Too much, too little time: A problem that seems to have followed from the Dark Knight (no comment) that Nolan seems to want to shove too much into a..sigh...2 and 1/2 hour movie or there abouts. There was very little down time, or respite from the constant action..it was all go go go go all the time. Very much a movie for the MTV generation. I had little problem with this, but my mother found it rather pointless. I agree with her that the Snow level was unnecessary and made it much worse.
Time: Time apparently runs differently between layers. x3 I belive...sorry, Believe. This wasn't really conveyed very well apart from the truck..slowly...crashing..into..the..water. Between the other layers, it seemed time was constant...or it may have been too subtle for me to pick up.
It was too long: A paradox? I said that there was too much to fit into the time...well, I reckon Kojima has nothing on Nolan. The first 30 mins could have been taken off that movie...we could have just gone straight into Cobb getting the mission and setting up his team, we didn't need the first dive at all. Yes it introduced the idea, yes it introduced the wife....but why not do that all in the training sessions with...sigh..Ariadne (oh what a wicked web she wove)? JGL managed to explain stuff well, and you get to see the wife again anyway. It's unnecessary padding.
The mission: After all the sacrifice, after all the fighting and the shouting matches as to how far they push it (Why do they care if Cobb gets to go home? If real I mean..) they succeed....and thats it. No comedown, no YEAH WE DID IT, no Scarecrow goes off to dismantle the business..not even a fucking phone call. It all just gets washed away by Cobb...and I couldn't care less about Cobb...and neither did anyone else i was with.

If you've got this far, well done. Have a cookie...an actually cookie, not just a biscuit. Americans can be very confused by these things. Anyway, I found it to be a much better movie than the Dark Knight, but worse than the Prestige. I like the idea and the presentation, but I found there to be too many flaws in my opinion for it to be anything but middling to good.  I bet it would have made a great book though.  Given more space to breathe it would have been a better experience.

STEAM STEAM WONDERFUL STEAM
Having Steam natively on the mac is a wonderful thing, if a little difficult on the wallet.
Though we are lacking L4D at the moment (Spring..no Summer...no wait..Fall..btw WTF is Fall? Do you people have a problem with Autumn?) We do have Killing Floor. It ratchets up the arcade aspect of L4D by pitting you and 5 others against legions of...well...mutated zombie clone weapon things..in Basingstoke. Half of the fun is that it's set in the UK. Well, at least i find it amsuing. Nothing ever really happens in the UK apart from Darlek invasions, Zombie infestations...and Zombie Darlek infestations. Anyway, there's a very simple xp and perk system in place that adds a gloss of RPGness (get 200 headshots with weapon X ((Fastball Special)) level up and get discounts and do better damage) It's fun, dumb and....well..fun. The VO is awful. Horrendous. But thats half the charm.

PSN Download.
Don't. Just..don't buy it.
I have an old PSP1000 series, yet I have no problems pulling off moves in Guilty Gear and Blazblue. Darkstalkers is a different story. Not a single fireball can i through..nothing. It's a launch title or there abouts, so i was going to give it a chance, but the controls and the rather awful graphics just made me realise that I had wasted money on something totally unwanted. Now I know better.

Yo son, it Diablo.
Steam strike again....
Well, it's certainly pretty much diablo. Great graphics and good clicking fun. You like diablo? You'll probably like this.
My Alchemist is destroying everything with his ember lightning on hard, even though he's only level 13 or something.
Only problem with the mac version seems to be that the class mods (adding new classes to the existing 3) don't work and will crash the game. Other mods work okay, but it's shame that i can't play a warlock assassin once I've beaten the game with my alchemist. Also..sale prices on items WTF is that shit? 87gold for a legendary item that costs 12000 to buy? Its like down Clapham Market all over again.

I went back to FEAR 2 so I would be ready for F3AR or whatever they're calling it now.
I actually got around to buying the DLC where you're one of the replica soldiers...haven't finished yet, but it seems pretty short for £6.99 or whatever the price was.
Anyway, FEAR2. Damn fine single player game. Really enjoy it. Mean to finish it on hard at some point to get the trophy.

I've been pretty vocal about my dislike of Visceral games...but I'm willing to give everyone a second chance (apart from R* who have had 4 chances already and I'm done with that) so I'm trying to finish Dead Space. I'm on level 7? (just killed the leviathan and shot a meteor out into space) and now i have to go somewhere else because something else doesn't work. Lazy plot design. ergh. Still I can appreciate delimbing alien things, and I love the lore....it's just a shame that so far the game has yet to capitalise on the fantastic backstory..god I loved those animated Comic things and the anime. It was good solid fun. Hopefully the second one will fix these problems, and Visceral will bring me around....but there's no fucking way in hell i will touch Dante's Inferno. Not for all the tea in china.

Yeah, I'm on a mac. Read the last blog post if you're interested how i can run Alien Swarm without Bootcamp/Parallels, etc
So...Isometric bug hunts. Granted because i'm letting Wine emulate a windoze environment, I get the occasional lag and graphics problems, but it works well enough.
The main problem is the same with every game of this type, people rush off and either get killed, or as a medic, get you killed by not protecting you. Also waiting for the next round/everyone to die before spawning makes sense..but is fucking boring in practice. I don't really want to spectate thanks...i'd rather be playing the game. I understand the reasons, I just don't appreciate them.

That and TF2 and of course Blazblue were all she wrote this week.
Coming up in the next couple of weeks:
Tons of GNs. I'm waaaaay behind, with Hickman's initial FF run and his latest Secret Warriors, the x-over Necrosha, Final Crisis, first new New Mutants trade and Wood's Northlanders turning up hopefully soon.
Valhalla Rising dvd: More vikings, unfortunately not Cyber Vikings with 5minute long valkyrie cutscenes..but we can't have everything
Blazblue: CS cuz I can't wait till October..and I'll probably by the LE here in Europe anyway.
Just Cause 2: I don't like free roam games, but it was £17 and it's insane. I liked the first game....

So until next time, hope to god i don't spend any more money.

Playing PC games on a Mac sans BC and other paradoxes (spoilers)

Another week, another blog...or is it?
Usual notice that all opinions are mine, do not represent actual 'facts' and if you don't like them either argue them properly or fuck off.

Games I've been playing this past week include:

Thoughts:
Take it as a given that I've been playing Blazblue with my Hori stick, and I still suck with it. Need to get the motions down for Arakune's grab->Distortion Finish. Not easy to do on a stick as loose as i assume this one is. Anyway, I thought I'd see how MvC2 played on it...I'm looking forward to MvC3 as long as it's more like Tats vs Cap and less like SFIV which I do not enjoy playing. (Cue people bitching about my taste in fighting games) Anyway, it was rather liberating using the stick compared to the pad on MvC2. I was easily able to pull of my teams moves without too much problem (Sakura, Strider and Wolverine if you're interested) with Sakura and Strider being far easier to play with. Practice makes perfect, and I intend to order Continuum Shift next month so I'll get a lot more practice in eventually. Need more Sakura in games though. She's steadily becoming my SF main. Odd.

and the p3p train keeps a rolling. Lvl21, 12 hours in, just had my first death at the love hotel boss. Ahh memories of dying repeatedly there. Have to remember to leave Mitsuru behind and take Akihiko next time. Playing through this version, I 've noticed that it seems to be much easier than either the original or FES. I'm not really having a hard time at all. I just finished the Devil link with Tanaka..which was odd because you got a link each time you spoke to him instead of the usual 'your feel that you may become closer soon' crap. It's nice that they kept the BGM select with Fuuka. First thing i do is switch it to Maya's theme (thankfully labeled now instead of 1/2/3/4) and go off on my way. Still an awesome game.

Nice piece by Random guy on here. Credit goes to him, whoever he is.

 TF2
Thoughts:
Well.....Well, this really is a damn fine game.
I've moved beyond playing Pyro unless necessary. I tend to start as a Spy (with my beloved Cloak and Dagger) and then move from Heavy/Medic/Engineer as necessary. Engineers are by far the easiest and most OP class in the game. Without trying i racked up 35 kills in one life with a sentry. I just had to fix it every so often and watch out for spies. Course having a spy mentality while playing other classes helps quite a bit in dealing with spies on the other team. The two classes that completely befuddle me are the demoman and scout. Scout has to be the hardest class to play as (unless you have problems being a spy). You move waaay too fast, and you die waaay too fast. I'm all for twitch gaming, but that's more like spasm gaming. Demoman, i just have a problem with hitting anything dead on without it being in your face. The amount of random movement in that game (coming from a spy player) is soooo damn annoying. Perfect backstab position...stab....oh god, he moved...sentry death. I'm going to see if i can remap the buttons so I can quickly switch between the sapper and knife so I can actually take the cheap sentries out before I kill a dude. I still hate the fact you can't 'a la WoW' backstab someone from stealth, but that might be a bit unfair to everyone else. Oooh I know. I can QQ on message boards and say that Rogues need a buff and Pallys are OP. That'll work.
Damn good game though. Glad I took the chance after hearing about the TNT. Thanks GB you're the greatest *two thumbs up*

Before I get on to the next part i'd like to draw your attention here:
 http://forum.portingteam.com/index.php
This is the place for mac gamers to play their pc games on a mac.....
wait, let me rephrase that.
The porting team are a dedicated group of software coders who attempt to make Pc Games (such as Metro 2033 or Mass Effect 2) playable on Macs without the need for bootcamp.
'Well...' I hear you say, after the lolmac crap has quietened down 'how do they do this miraculous thing?'
With Wine...and lots of vodka. Well, they use the same thing that linux users do. Wine. I'm not technical in any way, shape or form. As i understand it, wine acts as a..hmm..translation device between the windows software and OSX, allowing an intel mac computer to run software designed for a PC.
Next question: is it any good?
To date I've played and completed Mass Effect (the original) on my mac with only some slight texture problems.
Sins of a Solar empire was perfectly ported
Borderlands, apart from a problem with the sniper scope, worked perfectly
Work continues on a port of ME2. It does work, but there are texture and speed problems which a being ironed out
Steam was ported at least 2 years before the official port (and may have had a hand in it's creation, all valve stuff works brilliantly in wine)
Dawn of War Soulstorm (my own port) works perfectly, as do all the original DoW games. Unfortunately all Games for Windows live games don't work due to the shitty GFWL client not working under wine.

I should note that to play these games, naturally you need the original game and a method of installing it on your mac. I tend to use crossover games to install, then take the file and place it in the wrapper that i downloaded from the forum. I'm no tech boffin, so if you're interested I'd take a look at the forum yourself and read the FAQs to get a fuller idea.

So why mention it? Apart from to point mac players to somewhere that may help them play those games they want (however small that community is)
Let me start at the beginning...oh and I should note that I'm one of those people who prefers to solo mmos. I'm not big on trusting other people not to be useless/dicks/useless dicks. I blame WoW and every co-op game I've ever played for that mentality. TF2 is just as bad usually. Sometimes people naturally come together but most of the time it's just a free for all.
Anyway

NA Architect Edition Box Art
NA Architect Edition Box Art

I was bored on Tuesday, so flicking around Steam I found City of Heroes Architect Edition for 14€. I thought, what the hell, and I bought and downloaded it. Due to some fuckup at NCsoft (anyone shocked there?) the master account page was unavailable to many people. I took 2 days of searching to find out that you had to change your DNS to google's (8.8.8.8.) to be able to connect. So finally I was able to make an account...now this being a new purchase I assumed I would have a months play time free, which i did..unfortunately I also had to pay for the next month as well to register my account. This rather irked me, but anyway... I went into the game with a hope that, much like TF2 it would impress me.
So finally I was able to login and create my character. Now, I understand this game is..what? 7 years old...but that's no excuse for the god awful graphics in this game. The avatar creation system, the most loved thing about City of Heroes, really disappointed me. I swear they were just putting textures on flat surfaces for the face.
Anyway, I select a villain, create my Ice based toon and get slammed right down in a prison riot...which I thought was pretty empty for a rioting prison.
First order of call: Some nondescript bloke who tells me to go get some painkillers, so off i trot to go get some painkillers..wondering why he needs them to begin with, is he a super addict? I mean..it's a prison breakout and all he wants are painkillers.  So i bring this guy back his pills and then he sends me to talk to some other nondescript bloke about my powers. Having chosen an Ice toon, I had an Ice blast power, a freeze ray, and...for some reason, a self destruct button. There seemed to be no auto attack button like in WoW, so you have to keep pushing 1 in order to punch someone (which does fuck all damaged anyway) So after doing some target practice on police robot thingies..which in itself was rather....dull, i was sent into the sewer pipe. So i was sent running down there, all the while i tried not to get evil super crap on my boots, to meet some chinese ninja dude outside. He spouts some weird mumbo jumbo about Lord Arachnos and whether I am worthy of being his slave? I don't know...he comes across like that dude in Black Mask who spouts spiritual crap all the time..I think it was black mask...anyway off I go to Ice some lvl1 dudes........and I died. Why? Well, there's a hell of a lot of cooldowns (sic) going on at once and the normal 'hit people in the face' attack does fuck all damage...have i mentioned that? So anyway, I got back up and iced those bitches.
I then went into the courtyard and met up with this black armoured dude who said he was from Arachnos. You can say what you like, but that's a great name for a terrorist organisation. Up there with Cobra-lalalalalaaaa...cough..sorry. He sends me off to find some guy who's supposed to be planting bombs around the place but has been gone for too long. I find this dude in some nondescript (yes...this game loves its nondescriptiveness) building being harassed by some guys from the 'longbow' squad or something. TBH they look like Youngblood rejects and they went down like Youngblood rejects too (+1 internets if you remember the Youngbloods from back in the day) bomb planted I ding and run out the door. Anyway after running around and icing some fools I get taken off to Mercy Island (with a Big Ben lookalike) and a meeting with some weird woman with a cone helmet..thing.
Go Ice some more fools..she said. I began to wonder if my choice of powerset really defined my role in this game. So off i went, through the protesters outside the evil lair of arachnos..yes there were protesters, and no I wasn't allowed to kill them.  I did a few missions, danced with some snake people, levelled up a bit and I'm seriously underwhelled by the experience. It so far seems to be a 'by the numbers' MMO where they forgot that it was supposed to be fun. I've got until Sept to play it, so I'll give it some more of my time, but it's really got to start doing something interesting if I'm going to keep playing. Of course one of the main things in its favour is that it's only 4gb compared to the 20gb that WoW took up. bloody hell.

This leads us, dear friends, if you're still awake...to where the porting team comes in.

Waaaay back last year, I was playing Champions Online (which may go a long way towards explaining my distaste of CoH). I really enjoyed my time with it, but not enough to keep switching over to Bootcamp every time i wanted to play. (I don't have much HD space on my MBP. 50gbs is music and recordings..and it's only a 120gb hd) But playing CoH reminded me how much I enjoyed it. Now, some clever lad named Doh13 or something similar, had created a wrapper for Star Trek online to allow people to play it on their Macs. STO and Champions Online use the same engine and are by the same people, so logically there was a large chance that STO's wrapper would work for CO...and it did. With a little tweaking I am now able to play Champions Online on my mac without the need for bootcamp or any other such rubbish. I had a similar character (an Ice toon) as my City of Heroes toon and..well...it's a very different experience. It's more like a action game with MMO trappings than the traditional 'click..wait...attack..cooldown' setup of CoH. It also looks a hell of a lot better, but that's a given.
There are some minor problems with it though..I'm stuck in 4:3 mode and changing the res makes the screen go cerazy. Sometimes the camera goes insane when i turn (though rarely) and sometimes i get stuck in autorun..but thats easily solved. Very minor things that don't really affect the gameplay...So I was very happy with that.
Maybe I'll redo the tutorial level (which is what the demo is) and write about my experiences as I did above.

Whew, sorry for the wall of text, but there was a lot to get through.
I'm off for a swim. Leave your, hopefully sensible, replies after the beep.

My fightpad gave up on me, so I ordered a hori fightstick 3. By the time it arrived I had already finished the main story arc (which is something this game does FAR better than any other of its type) so I wasn't really running into playing the game at full tilt again on the ps3. What I have played of it with the Hori stick confirms what everyone says about switching over from a pad. It takes a damn long time to get used to it. It's a lot harder to pull off dp and fb moves on a stick if you aren't used to it. Turning on the input display in training helps a lot. I'm not suddenly crap at the game, I can still get through Arcade on hard without too much trouble using my 3 characters (Noel, Taokaka and Arakune) but don't expect to be god like.
I find the stick itself to be rather small for my hands..or perhaps its the placement of the stick closer to the buttons than i'd like. I didn't have the money to afford one of those ever so desirable TE edition sticks..so I guess you get what you pay for.
BB PSP:
Probably what i'll mostly be playing till I order Continuum Shift from Canada next month (I can''t wait till October..I'll have to work out a way to get the DLC)
It's pretty much a perfect port. Only thing scaled back are the graphics, which still look pretty good. I have a psp1003 and have no problem playing fighting games on it without modding the dpad.. I don't quite get while people keep bitching about it, it controls fine. No problems doing fb, dp or distortion moves. I think that may be because the game compensates for the dpad input by reading certain moves despite the dpad not fully doing them. I'm probably going to go through the story mode again on this once I finish....dun dun durrr

P3P: I'm not a very patient man when it comes to Atlus not giving a fuck about the EU as per usual..so I just imported it, again, from canada. Turned up a week later.
So yeah..it's totally Persona 3. I played most of FES so I chose the female protagonist. I wont lie and say I don't miss the animated cutscenes and the in engine hilarity...but I had no illusions that they could have fitted it onto a UMD...and for me it's much easier to play my psp than my ps2 (takes forever to set up my tv and console in my room and then take down again..no room) So...just enjoy what you've got. Anyway I've just got passed first midterms and Akihiko is back on the team. 3 things really stand out:
Music: I loved the original soundtrack, so I'm not too keen on the new songs tbh. They're not bad..I just prefer the old ones.
Death: Swear he's much more prevalent than in FES. I've been chased by him twice now. Never saw him in FES.
Female Route: It's nice to see new interactions with Yukari and the hot new Librarian chick. She's totally hot. Chihiro was cute, but Librarian is hot.

And I'm still plodding along with Dragon Age. After trying out most class/origin combinations I've gone back to my original Warrior Mage Elf..who unfortuantely is on one of my spare accounts..so I can't use save games or trophies on my main account, which would have been nice if I ever got around to awakening. Anyway I've killed my way through the conscription quests up to Orzimmar...then I went to look for Jania or whatever her name is, spent 45mins in the tunnels and came across a locked door. Well, I don't have any rouges with me and I'm not going to spend hours looking for the key, so wtf am i supposed to do? It got to a point where I just gave up in frustration because I don't have the time to wander around aimlessly. Don't lock bosses away from people because they didn't find some random key or don't have a rouge when you can't just switch party members out on the fly. God that annoyed me. Probably my own ineptitude, but I got that far by myself...gahh. Great game though.

and lastly (and I never thought i'd say this)

TF2: After listening to the guys talk about TF2 on the bombcast (pretty much after I had told them to STFU about Mortal Kombat for half an hour..god I hate that series. I loved 2 on the megadrive but ffs we've moved beyond that now haven't we? Next it'll be the wonders of Super Smash Bros..gahh) I thought I'd have a look at TF2 again. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when i got the Orange Box on the ps3 (yeah yeah I know) I had a go on it and it was about as much fun as watching paint dry (for those that like watching paint dry, in my book that means it's not much fun). So I was rather sceptical as to whether i would enjoy it. It's not secret that i dislike COD type games that purely focus on seriously killing each other. So I went on to steam on my mac and decided to by TF2.
3 days later, after downloading 8gbs (wtf..seriously? thats the size of the orange box ALONE) I booted it up. Valve being completely unable to optimise anything for mac it took a while to get going, but once it did..I saw that this ain't the same game anymore.
First off, the art style is great. Every character has it's own personality and place in the team. From burning maniacs to stealthy spies...every play style is catered for.
It took me a while to find my spot, but I lean towards Pyro so...thats what I do. I set people on fire and hope that the rest of my time can kill them after I'm dead...because I die. A lot. Last game I played I had the highest kill rate (178 or something..it was a very long game of zone capturing) but my k/d ratio was probably 1/5. Anyway you die, you learn and people were dead jealous of my earbuds.  Oh and engineers are cheap as hell. Am I the only one who thinks turrets are totally broken?
I'm probably going to sound like an achievement whore, but in these types of games (and fighting games too) I think achievements are a pretty fundamental part of the experience. It gives you something to aim for or try. Without them, while fun...TF2 would lose a large part of it's appeal for me. Everyone likes being told that they managed to do something crazy..like kill 5 people when dead.
Anyway I will continue to play and learn how to kill engineers before their cheap ass turrets kill me.

A day late, a dollar short (spoilers..probably)

Another week, another update.
Oh and, lest I forget, all opinions here are my own, solely, so don't get wound up about it.

This week i've mostly been playing:
Tales of Innocence (Eng Translation..FINALLY)

 ENGRISH!!!!!
 ENGRISH!!!!!
Thoughts:
So ToI has finally be translated by the fine people at AbsoluteZero, and I have to say, they have done a fine fine job of it. Everything has been translated and checked to the Nth degree. Even the skits...and I love the skits. It's a typical RPG storyline...boy meets girl, finds out that he's the reincarnation of a badass demon warrior, finds out girl is his lady love from another life, goes to look for more (shady look) 'Avatars'. Behind all this is the typical political intrigue of using these 'Avatars' (shady look) as weapons in the war between two states or a lab rats and the Church has a hand in this too. Well the story is typically convoluted, but fun. All of the main characters are likeable enough and the battle system from Tales of the Abyss is in full effect here.  To be honest, in my humble opinion this game is up with TWEWY as one of the best DS RPGs so far.

oh..it's started raining.

Puzzle Quest 2

 Thoughts:
Well...it's puzzle quest. It's definitely an improvement over galactrix which was a mess. I'd say PQ2 has a two steps forward, one step back problem. The interface is nice and clean and we have an interesting movement system that is less Map based and more like Diablo. They've also implemented some nice mini-games, like breaking down doors by matching specific gems, or loot systems that make you....match up specific gems in a time limit. We've also get a rarity system in place for loot. Problem is that the AI is still really really cheap. Without warning it can decimate you by matching 5 rows of skulls, spam it's abilities and then use its weapon all in one go...but that's PQ isn't it?

TWEWY

Thoughts:
While waiting for something to finish downloading (which believe me can take rather a long time here) I popped in TWEWY starting a whole new game.
Second time around, and it's still easily the best game on the DS by a very very very long way. Sure, if you don't like the aesthetics you might have a problem, but the core idea, story and design are superb. Not really anything else to say beyond that.

World of Warcraft:

No Caption Provided
Thoughts:
I've been playing WoW off and on for about 2 years. I'd been clean for about 5 months when a conversation here sent me back to Azeroth. I'll make it clear that WoW to me is nothing and has never been anything but a time waster. I started the game because I was miserable at Uni and needed somewhere to just switch off and listen to my podcasts after working all day. I got up to Level 80, levelled some alts and generally did what i needed to do. Once I left Uni, I stopped playing..until this week. After nearly finishing TWEWY again waiting for it to finish patching (yes...just patching, not DLing the whole thing) I went back to levelling my Druid.
4 days later I deleted it off my mac, happy in the realisation that I did not want to do that ever again. It's over and done for me.
Thank god.
Let me once again be clear, I don't hate WoW and I don't begrudge anyone who enjoys it. They say there's nothing worse than a repentant sinner, so that's the end on that one.

Starcraft+brood war

Thoughts:
So what did I do once I chucked my WoW? I went to look for my very old starcraft cd, old as in 'first printing' old. I couldn't find my cdkey, so I ended up just buying the thing from Blizzard and spending 7 hours downloading the 1.2gb...I'd pretty much finished TWEWY by then, and read a book, and walked the dog and had a swim. Anyway, Starcraft...still the same as it ever was. I have to admit that I hate the Terran campaign. It's so dull...I've pretty much got the fight on tarsonis to do before I go tyra..broo..sorry Zerg. (Wait, a X-men rpg with the Brood would be awesome) I've never played through Brood wars, but i'm looking forward to it. I'll be honest in my belief that Dawn of War makes SC look like what it is, a game from 13 years ago...but it's still fun.

 Final Fantasy XIII

Thoughts:
14 hours in, wandering around the theme park. I still have very little understanding of who the Big Bad is in this game. It seems to change every five minutes. Thankfully we've got beyond the whole 'Snow is a bastard' plot with Hope. I can't have been the only person who wanted to smash that kid's face repeatedly into a wall while explaining to him that, actually, it was his fault she died because he's a little whiney bitch. Sahz seems to be going that way too. Dahj this, Dahj that, Dahj Dahj Dahj. Yeah, we get it. I may be in the minority in that I actually like Vanille. She, Snow, Fang and Lightning are actually pretty cool characters, though Light does come and go rather. Pretty damn obvious from the time she opened her mouth that Vanille wasn't from around Cocoon. Anyway, I'm enjoying the game..especially when it was only £16.99. Just wish we could have an actual villain come in, bwahahaha and lay down his evil plans.

Rock Band 2

 Thoughts:
I've been practicing my drumming for when my nephews turn up. I tend to drum on hard instead of normal because, paradoxically, it's easier. Unfortunately we only have the GHWT drum set, which can make some songs more difficult to play in RB, but you adapt pretty quickly. White Wedding is damn good fun to drum.

Thoughts:
When i have the time, I like to break out my Noel or Tao and rip into the AI (my net speed being what it is).
My fightpad suddenly cut out on me during my fight with Hakumen using Tao....for the life of me I have no idea what happened there. Conflicting Wireless signal? If anyone has had a similar problem, could you tell me how to fix/stop it from happening, that would be really appreciated. Playing with a normal controller, while possible (I finished arcade) is just..annoying, especially with that shitty dpad.

My purchases this week :
Starcraft+brood war
Persona 3 Portable
Blazblue Portable
(Those last two are coming from Canada, cause neither have been released in the EU for some unknown reason..not even a release date...So It's going to be a while)
I'm also considering Guilty Gear Judgement (which is £9.99 on psn, at least twice the $5.99 on US PSN..oh how we do love being screwed here in the EU)
I have an old 1000 model psp which is on it's last legs..so I'm thinking of upgrading to the psp 3000 at some point.

Anyone have any thoughts on playing Fighting games with the psp pad/stick?...and i don't mean the 'don't do it' type of thoughts. More like the 'well, here's how to make it better/ I've done it and I would rethink' type of thoughts.

U to the P to the D to the A to the T, frikky frikky E (spoilers)

So
This weeks games:
Mass Effect 2
Peace Walker
Blazblue
Bleach 3rd Phantom
FFXIII

ME2:
I've not got a 360, I've not got a PC..all I've got is a Mac and a ps3 (and a ds, and a psp, and a ps2, and a wii, and an original xbox, and a gamecube)
So, you'd naturally think there would be no way, beyond bootcamping my mac (which I can't do) to play ME2, right?
WRONG...well...kinda wrong.
Some genius, somewhere, created this little thing called wineskin. It uses Wine in a similar way to the cider ports we've had from EA etc. It's a wrapper that you put your installed game (using crossover or  whatever) in. With wineskin you can port games over from PC. Sure its not a native build from the ground up...but its BETTER THAN NOTHING.
Anyway, having played and finished ME1 on my mac (great port), I finally got around to trying out the ME2 wrapper.
It works...but it still needs a lot of tweaking. The game looks awful, with textures out of place or just black, and it runs between 30fps down to about 5fps at times.
Keep in mind that the wrapper is a work in progress, sure it looks shitty now, but hopefully we'll be able to improve upon it.  I've played up to the part in the second mission after meeting Tali again..then it just got too bogged down.
Also my MBP is 3 years old and only has 128mb Geforce 8600M GT. My copy of ME ran fine, and I could play Crysis with everything on medium when i did have Bootcamp.
Anyway, the guys who have put their heart and soul into porting ME2 have done a great job so far and they're still working on it.
As for the game itself, I really don't like the UI..the bit with all the squad members at the bottom annoys me, and the shield and health indicator is in the wrong place for my eyes. I think all that time playing WoW a year or so ago has made me over sensitive to UI's in general. I always want to tweak or move them around.
Other than that, It seems to be a great sequel to a great game. I'm looking forward to playing it as it's meant to be played at some point...just not now.

Peace Walker
Finished the main game..now I'm playing hide and seek with Zadornov (or Senor Door Knob as people have taken to calling him)
The story, as in most MGS games, seems to lose the thread near the end. AIs with ghosts in the machine? Why did the Boss really die?
I'm pretty sure this has all been covered before in MGS3. There was no revelation for me about the Boss' motivation.
The final battle with Peace Walker annoyed me at the start...You've got to stop the launch but we don't know how!
So there I am, trying to find the clever way to stop it, when all you need to do is shoot the bugger.
I think that really was the main failing of Peace Walker. All the bosses just needed to be shot over and over again. It's a nice touch to make it matter where you shoot them for the AI parts...but just shooting the pod over and over again with rockets and a heavy machine gun gets a bit tired after a while.
Another problem was the characters themselves.
Coldman? Dude had no personality beyond 'crazy dude' and...you wouldn't have missed him if he had been taken out of the game.
Paz? WTF...Isn't there supposed to be a twist in the tail with her? She's too goody goody to exist. Also, that date with Paz thing and the love box? People are complaining about that? REALLY?
Amanda: First couple of levels she's badass...and then she just disappears from the story to only be heard over the codec....pretty much like everyone else. Why aren't these people out there doing backup for the boss?
The game just felt really compartmentalised. This bit here, this bit here..ne'er the twain shall meet.
Even so, it was a great game well worth picking up and a 'solid' edition to the series...but next time, put Infrastructure in you twats.

Blazblue.
Noel and Taokaka continue to give me hours of enjoyment.
Got my first online perfect the other day with Noel against a guy 20 levels higher than me. I'd like to think it was skill, but it's more likely he spilt his tea on his lap or something. Definitely the game for me that SFIV is for many others.

Bleach: 3rd Phantom.
Ahh, Bleach, a DS, a SRPG.
I really want to like this game...really do. I love SRPGs, I like Bleach and i love my DS.
Problem here is twofold.
a) The game mechanics are..boring. It's slow and doesn't..frikky frikky..flow. Attack animations are non-skippable and your movement is severely limited. It can take 4 turns just to get next to the enemy. The graphics are pretty poor too but thats not really relevant.
b) The story. Twins attacked by hollows in the past, taken in by random made up Captain of 5th squad with Aizen as LT (I want to drive my sword through his eye every time i see the fucker) and they become Shinigami..or as the americans like to say Soul Reapers...which really does not have the same ring to it. This is the far past, where all the major Captains and LTs of the 13 squads are still kids (considering they're just souls..I don't quite understand how that works)..so beyond seeing 'Lil Shiro', Momo, Gin, Renji and Matsumoto as kids..or seeing Urahara and everyone's favourite ninja Soi-Fon..there's not much to see here. I think this is post 'turn back the pendulum' so no Shinji as captain here. oh and the main characters..the twins...are fucking annoying.
Anyway, its a nice enough game..and when we get to modern era it might pick up.

FFXIII
After all the bitching about this game when it came out, i was hesitant to get it.
Now that you can buy it for around £16.99 new, I thought what the hell...
First off, either it doesn't install at all, or it does streaming installs like Fallout 3 or Wolverine. This is a very good thing.
Next, on a hdtv at 1080p the game looks incredible. INCREDIBLE. The transitions from battle to travel are smooth, and rarely does it load for more than 3 seconds.
So, onto the storyline. I've only just started the game..just gone off to see Serah in the massive damocles swords type thing.
As I'm just starting out, I don't expect to understand anything..its 'in media res' so I'll just have to pick it up as I go along.
From what I understand you've got Cocoon above and Pulse below. Pulse is bad, Cocoon is good. On Pulse there are these being's called Fal'Cie who are burdened with some sort of power, and they make people into L'Cie if they come too close or something. The government of Cocoon is either sending a tithe to Pulse or culling it's overburdened population by ferrying them off to 'hell on earth' pulse. I have a feeling Pulse is no such thing. Serah is Lightning's sister and Snow's fiancee.
Snow needs to shave, Hope is annoying, I can't stop looking at Vanille's arse during a fight, Lightning seems to be a decent protagonist and Sahaz? is the token Black guy of the story. Hopefully he moves beyond the annoying whiner that he is at the moment.
Oh and why does Vanille sound Australian? WTF is up with that?
Gameplay:
Wow, they sure weren't kidding. Straight line from A to B, with some fighting and cutscenes inbetween.
This doesn't bother me so much. I treat games like books..I'm here for the story. If they can keep my interest, I don't really care if all i do is press X.
Which is another point. All you do in RPGs like FF is just press X. You select what you want to do (attack, magic, item, defend) and press X. There is no change apart from the fact that they have simplified the system with auto battle. I have no problem with it. You can use it or not use it, its up to you..just don't whine about it when you do use it.
As i said, I'm still at the beginning of the game, and..erm there's no leveling going on, which is...odd, but whatever. Also with only two attacks, there's not much strategy going on here. I do like the 'break' type system that seems to have been taken from Xenosaga but simplified. Seriously simplified. Hey, if Albedo is in this..that would be awesome.

I think this is the word of today people.
SIMPLIFIED.
Square has made this game as simple as possible to appeal to as many people as possible, and has lost some fans in the long run.
I don't really have any problem with the game so far..I'd like to stop jumping around characters and stick with Lightning for a while.
Anyway, It'll be interesting to see how it develops..hopefully they'll start putting new mechanics in soon. I could do with some more attack types.
I will say this though...I'm ready for a ps3 Kingdom Hearts.

Update X (spoilers..probably..to someone...most likely Steve)

Quick update.
This weeks games (which finally turned up after waiting 2 weeks or so)
Blazblue
Ratchet and Clank: Crack in Time
Uncharted 2
Phantasy Star Portable
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
and my fightpad came as well.

So.
Blazblue is awesome. I actually like playing as 5 of the twelve characters. Noel, Jin, Ragna, Rachel and..erm the dude who looks likes he should be in Persona.
It's a smooth fighting game thats as much about flash as it is about depth.
Odd story mode, done in the interactive novel type style that is so popular in Japan. I have no problem with it, so thats all good.
Its odd that it actually has a coherent story mode to begin with..but each erm level has only one bount..so you have to be very aggressive.
I've mentioned that my internet connection is beyond awful, but i managed a quasi-lag free game. Naturally i got ripped apart..but it was good fun.

Might be a good time to mention my fightpad. Its a nice bit of kit. Dpad floats above the controller slightly, and it reminds me of the old megadrive (genesis) pads..which makes me feel right at home. The rows of three buttons, top for punches, bottom for kicks and the two shoulder buttons for all three punches/kicks. It works perfectly with SFIV, though i did have one odd disconnect with Blazblue near the end of a match..which ended with me dead, but hey..it happens. Only problem is that it uses a usb receiver which you have to put in player 1 usb. If you pick up another controller to play something else, you have to remember to remove the usb otherwise it won't register the normal ps3 pad as player 1. A very minor problem though. If you like your fighting games and are frustrated with either ps3/360 pads..i'd advise you to buy one.

Ratchet and Clank is..well ratchet and clank. For me, thats more than enough. They added temporal distortion puzzles in realtime..which is nice. They've also added a massive amount of customisation and weapon upgrades. They've also improved on the space segments by making them free roaming. Oddly enough you can pick up different radio stations in your ship, making it a rather...GTA like experience in some ways.

MGS: Peace Walker...hmmm
No infrastructure Co-Op or Vs Ops. My ps3 uses wireless so i can't use the adhoc, and my mac doesn't have an xlink kai compatible card.
I'm sure i'm not in the minority in this one..well perhaps with the mac..but what the fuck is the point in adding co-op and vs when the majority of people don't have friends/relatives/animals that have psp's near them..let alone are interested in MGS?
Besides that glaring fault, and the fact that the bosses are obviously set up with Co-Op in mind....and the annoying 'Take out all the guards before tranqing the drive' mini bosses' in my...opinion, having played all of the MGS games, this is by far the best. Take into consideration that, even though I loved the storyline of Snake Eater, I hated some of the mechanics and the general gameplay. The cutscenes, done in a graphic novel style, are beautiful. Personally, I wish that all of the cutscenes in MGS up to now had been done with Ashley Wood's art. The man is genius. I'm still looking to get that Omnibus that they recently put out of all the MGS comics, mostly for his artwork.
The QTEs that are in the cutscenes are pretty damn good to, as long as you're ready for them.

The other two games are either known, or haven't got round to them yet.
Any thoughts, leave them after the *beep*

Bad games, good games, all sorts of games (spoilers)

3 big things this week...and no they aren't prefaced by the letter E.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Lets get the obvious out of the way, I grew up with Transformers, I love Transformers, I wish i still had my Transformers..damn nephews...
I wish i could like this game...i really do. But I can't. Aside from the god awful designs that the movie bots have (Starscream..dear god what have they done to you?) there are two major flaws with the game itself as far as I am concerned.
a) Holding down a button to stay in vehicle mode. WTF? Holding down R2 while trying to drive while shooting stuff and dodging around corners (the handling is pretty bad too) just doesn't work for me. Why cant you just tap a button to transform in and out of vehicle mode? Add to this that you have to hold L2 to go into 'shooty shooty' mode and you get the feeling that the designers wanted to make the game as complicated as possible to control.
b) The actual GUI and backend of this game are BROKEN. Its frozen on me 3 times. I can only remember 3 games that have ever done that to me in the 2 years I've had a PS3. Rise of the Argonauts, which didn't boot at all, Transformers and not surprisingly Fallout 3. I may have got a bad copy, but you never know with these types of game.
Aside from all this, TFRF is actually a pretty good arcade type game. Do X, Y or Z in the shortest amount of time to get medals, or complete special challenges to open up more bots. Aside from the driving mechanics it controls okay..
If the team who made TFRF didn't have the pressure that all movie/game combos have while being developed..they may have had something special for the fans.
It will be interesting to see how War for Cybertron fixes these problems...if at all.

Street Fighter 4.
Yes, the old one.
I'm spending time in the challenge rooms training so i can actually win once in a while.
I can get through easiest (to unlock characters) with a string of perfects so im not as bad as I was.
I still don't like the combo timing, I don't seem to be able to string them together, especially in the challenge rooms.
Anyway, hopefully my new pad will help and buying it has made me take this seriously...
So far I'm running a Sagat, Chun Li, Cammy and naturally Ken regime.
Anyway its a long term project...practice practice practice.

Guilty Gear Accent Core
I love the GG games. I suppose I'm boring because I main Sol, but when you can get to lvl 240 on survival..before you hands drop off, I think there's a reason he's my main.
Playing with a classic controller plus makes all the difference. I'm mostly playing this to get ready for Blazblue which should turn up next week. Anyway.great game.
I-No is still cheap as hell though.

Okay; here's the big one:
Lost Planet 2.
It's funny. I can totally see why Brad had a problem with this game.
The AI of the squad members is...passable to down right awful.
It in no way controls like a modern TPS that he and the majority of the western world would be used too.
The unlocking system is...well totally luck based and can be very frustrating.
The story seems to not allow any attachment to characters, you barely if ever see a face, and then you have another character.

I don't care. For me...its a great game.
I loved my recent playthrough of LP. It was a breath of cold fresh air in comparison to the arid, and frankly boring world of RDR. I still haven't gone back to it.
Now, I've only finished the first campaign mission (so Starting NEVEC) but I had an..Akrid of a time.
I'm used to how it controls, so that was never a problem for me. Running around and shooting Akrid with shotguns never gets old.
However running around and shooting Snow Pirates with Shotguns gets old pretty quickly...that would be my only complaint.
You can see the influence from Monster Hunter all over this game, from the bosses to the customisation. Its a very Japanese game.
It seems there is now a more pronounced section of the game playing public who just do not like games that are...'very Japanese'.
They point to the fact that the controls are 'clunky' (no they aren't), that the game is 'janky' (no thats Infamous you're thinking of) and will complain about how long it takes for animations to finish (well thats the game, much like my problem with combos in street fighter..deal with it.)
Its all and none of these things. It's different, and for some thats too much. For the rest of us, well..aren't we lucky?
I even had a go at ranked multiplayer...IN SPAAAAAACEEEE. Do we have Jetpacks? Yes we do!
I've mentioned before how bad my connection is, so when 90% of the people playing were based in Japan..or were pretending to be based there at least, I knew it was going to be lag city for me...even so, I enjoyed the hell out of my game. Its got the normal level system that you've come to expect, and you can unlock 'perks' or whatever by trying your hand at the roulette wheel of fate which is turning (ergh bad Blazblue reference). Due to the lag, i found it VERY difficult to kill anyone, I got 3 kills by just spraying the area with a VS, but I don't think online play is ever going to really workout for me.
Nevertheless.. I'm enjoying Lost Planet 2 SP for now.

So incoming this week (hopefully)
Uncharted 2 Platinum.
R&C Crack in Time Platinum
Phantasy Star Portable
MGS: Peace Walker
Blazblue
Ryu Fightpad.
and that is all...literally everything I can buy until next month.
So far I've got a preorder down on P3P.

My problem with SFIV and how the hell do i fix it?

I'm an ardent fan of fighting games, though I don't consider myself to be a pro or actually anything above casual in my fighting gaming.
I grew up with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat on my Megadrive.
I sank countless hours into Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Guilty Gear. I mastered Guy, Sol and Chipp.
None of my 6-13 year old nephews could beat me (heh) and neither could my university friends.
Well apart from this one guy who beat me every single time, whatever I did...and he never played any fighting games before.

Now I have a ps3, and i was counting down the days till SFIV came out.
I preordered it, and waited patiently till i came back from Uni to play it.

The day finally arrived, I put the game in..IIIINNNDESSTRRRUUCTTTABBBLLLEEE
.....
I can't play it.
I tried, and I tried...but...Its hard enough to pull of a fireball, let alone combo.
I have other problems with the game, but its mostly my inability to actually effectively play it.
Even on its easiest setting I have problems.

So why?
I have some theories about this:
a) I'm just generally a lot worse at fighting games than I thought...which is possible, but unlikely. I can still play SFA3  and Guilty Gear on hard mode just fine.
b) The ps3 pad just doesn't work for me in regards to fighting games. This is very likely a part of my problem.
c) The SFIV engine just does not do anything for my way of playing..I could say it was too slow, but I'd probably be wrong.
d) Tying in to the last point..maybe my rhythm is not in time with SFIV's engine, and I just need to work a bit harder at it.

I will say that I prefer the VS series at the moment over 'au natural'. I have Tats vs Capcom and with the Classic Controller Pro I can rip into that game just like I used to do with the older games. Its an awesome game by the way, and being able to play as Tekkaman Blade is well worth the wait.

So here are my questions to those in the know:

Should I be considering getting a fightpad? I've never really spent more than 5 mins in an arcade, so I don't think a stick is really going to help me.
I've ordered Blazblue due to my love of Guilty Gear...any thoughts on this game and whether it will have the same problems as SFIV?
Am I the only one having serious problems with SFIV?
and more generally, let me know what you think on the state of fighting games at the moment
