My Top 10 Shotguns

Ah, the shotgun.  Where would video games be without it?  You'd be hard pressed to find a less elegant weapon, and that's just the way I like it.  Some games turn it into little more than a melee weapon, but here's a few that get it right.

List items

  • God, this things a beast. A powerful, near semi-auto speed shotty with a beefy 12 round clip, a lightning fast reload, and an absurd amount of available ammo. At close range it tends to turn enemies into a cloud of red mist. Do it in slo-mo for the full experience. Both of F.E.A.R. 2's shotguns are pretty nice as well, but only a pale imitation of the original's.

  • Logic be damned, this pump shotty can double tap! Add that to it's generous range, satisfying feel, and the awesome way you acquire it and you've got a winner.

  • Remington 870:

The first shotgun you get, and far and away my favorite. This classic pump is already a monster up-close, but slap some slugs on there and you've got yourself the finger of god. It doesn't get much better than one shotting people from A to B in Atacama.

  • The crossbow or even the lowly wrench may be more powerful, but this Art Deco death machine is always my weapon of choice. The three different ammo types will tear anything apart, including Big Daddies. Upgrading it's power and firing speed only sweeten the pot.

  • The Vitrolic Crux:

A blessing and a curse. Finding new weapons is the best part of Borderlands, until you find yourself a good Crux. This rapid fire face melter is the last gun you'll ever need.

  • So satisfying to use. The three pronged aural assault of firing-pumping-kill confirmation *blip* is forever ingrained on my memory. The flashlight lets you see the carnage all the better. Why do Engineers always get the shotguns? I guess it really is the thinkin' man's weapon.

  • What this game lacks in shooting polish it makes up in shotgun. These things have fantastic range and incredible power. All the customization options almost make me forget how clunky they actually are.

  • Who can forget the first time you find this iconic boomstick? Trapped in a house by the zombie horde, surrounded on all sides, you rush up the stairs to find this shining beacon of 12 gauge salvation. It doesn't hurt that the late game model has a near bottomless clip either.

  • Nothing beats rocket sliding around some cover in slo-mo and obliterating a guy in one shot. Besides, the melee for this thing is a backhanded bitch slap that will send a robot flying across the map. How could it not make the list?

  • I haven't played doom since the early 90's so I can't speak to it's Double Barreled bringer of death with much authority. This one makes the list on reputation.
