@The_A_Drain:
In addition to this, sometimes (only happened 2 or 3 times, so not often) when I click on an image to bring up it's options, it simply loads the image, losing all the work i'd not saved up until that point and requiring me to browse back and start the editor afresh.
This has happened to me way too many times. It occurs when you click on an image you recently placed and you are not editing a section (you haven't clicked the E button or after you have saved a section). Since you aren't in "Section Editing" mode, clicking on an image will load the image instead, not using FancyZoom, like it would normally do. (New images you add will not use FancyZoom, however, old images that were already there when you opened the guide for editing will use it, so you won't lose your edits when clicking on those).

Even if you browse back, the changes you made are gone. I was expecting some kind of "Are you sure you want to navigate away from the page?" warning or something. ^_^ What I've done is to force myself not to click on any image needlessly, making extra sure I'm editing something, so that the image-related options appear when I click on an image.

(This has never happened to me while in "section editing" mode, so I'm guessing this is what happened to you. I may be mistaken... ^_^)

@AgentJ: You add characters to an anime by adding them to any episode in which they appear (this also makes them appear in the franchise, if the anime is associated with a franchise). I suppose it is the same for manga (you add the character to the book / volume), but I've never edited manga pages.

About these empty pages... When you find a "skeleton page", say, of a character, and you know that character appears in series <Whatever>, just find an episode of that series where the character appears and add it there. This way, you are making that character belong to that series. For example if there is a single "Jun" skeleton page and there are 3 series were there are different characters named Jun (just Jun), by attaching the page as I mentioned, you are forcing the page to be of that anime. It is a skeleton page, after all, with no association of any kind, so you associate it yourself.

Be careful of duplicates. Mods can't delete things and the staff for the most part aren't doing any Delete Requests (there was a rare exception a few days ago; I posted a request 4 months ago... ^_^;). They should really let wiki mods delete pages (both here and over there), in my opinion. The staff is busy doing other things...

Anyway, if you have any questions about AV and editing, I can try to help you out. Just PM me over there (or of course, you can post in the forums so anyone can help you out). ^_^

Yeah, I'm a user at AV, too (same username). If you like anime / manga and like the "Whiskey Media style" (don't know how to call it in a simple way ^_^;) I think you'll like it. There aren't as many people as there are here, and quite a ton of pages are "skeleton pages" (they exist but no one has any points in them), so people that like to write can have some fun / help out.

@AlexMarra: I reported this a while back. In that thread Snide said they were going to "generify" those pages... Maybe they forgot... ^_^

Is it an interlaced PNG by any chance? Those tend to cause some trouble. I just tried it with an image of my own of that type and the same thing you mention happens. You can upload them but nothing appears after that, I suppose, because PIL can't handle those kinds of images (in the last dev podcast they said they use PIL). In the next PIL release this will be fixed (already works in the beta version available).

If it is that kind of image just saving it as a non-interlaced PNG or a JPEG is a possible solution.

This happened to me once before while trying to make a concept page. I filled all the information, but when I clicked Propose as New Concept or whatever it says the page appeared just like that one. Seems to me that the name field somehow was received as blank, so when it tries to put together the URL, only http://<game id> remains. Back then I was told to try making the page again and that the staff would erase the page. The id of that page is 61-24010.

Apparently it was a failed attempt at creating Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart. The image that was used is this one:

Thanks for the answer. I really like the "more technical" direction the podcast is taking, and love the code examples, too. I was wondering about the database model for your sites, as I think I will have to imitate it somewhat for one of my programs (that uses both the API and web scraping for things I can't get through the API), but using sqlalchemy. Maybe in the summer I can actually work on that part. ^_^;

New sites are mentioned... and I was thinking: aren't you guys afraid of "spreading yourselves too thin"? How much more "attention" is needed from you guys when a new site comes up (I mean after the initial launch phase)? The code base is the same, but each site has its differences that may require bug fixing from time to time, and new major features may be needed (such as the Achievements, I guess) than don't work well (or at all) on multiple sites. The "editorial staff" will handle the content side, I guess, but the editorial staff is small, too, so things like deleting wiki pages (that only the staff can make) take a long time (it is really bad at AV). Are delegating these kind of things to mods being considered or is this the editorial staff's decision to make?

Ahh, so it was PIL that you used after all. I love PIL and quite a lot of the programs I make use it in one way or another.

You guys mention Ruby on Rails... why didn't you choose it instead of Django?
