On Challenge in Video Games

I wasn't sure what to write my first blog post on Giant Bomb about, so I thought I'd copy a conversation I had with a friend of mine on Facebook about difficulty in modern video games. He believe that most players today are too soft and shrink from challenging games too often. This was my response:

I usually enjoy a challenge, my problem comes when a challenge turns punishing. Think of a game like Dark Souls, it's a game designed around shitting on the player until they finally figure out its obtuse rule set. I simply don't have the patience like I did when I was a kid and could sit for hours on end trying to hammer through some insanely difficult 8-bit game. Nowadays, I'm looking for more of an immersive, cinematic experience from games that I can get through in a weekend like the Uncharted series. Not terribly difficult to finish but I still feel I got my money's worth from the experience.

Then again, maybe I'm just getting old.
