  • Uh Infinity ward weren't formed to make MW2... they made CoD 1,2,4 and MW2. Treyarch made 3 and WaW.

So I didn’t buy Resistance when it first came out because I played it round a mate’s house and thought it wasn’t worth a full £40 for what seemed like a mediocre game. Though this week I found it on Amazon for a mere £7.99 on the marketplace, so I thought that it would be worth that. And mostly that’s true.

Don’t get me wrong I love the ideas behind it. Mysterious virus breaks out in soviet Russia, an air of mystery around it. Then all of a sudden they launch a massive offensive against Europe and it is revealed that these are actually the Chimera. That sounds cool. But unfortunately the game suffers from the same ailment that infected the movie Jumper. It sounded great on paper, cool super powered teleporters being hunted by Samuel L Jackson, but the implementation of that created a bland, disappointing and uninteresting experience. Which is exactly what happened in Resistance.

The level design is unintuitive, the levels themselves are disjointed by heavy exposition in the cut scenes that feature a British chick explaining everything in the past tense which, ok it’s a rarely used story telling device, but there’s a reason no one uses it. It draws you out, removes any sense of immersion. One little tiny nit pick that I have with the campaign is that early on there’s a level where you’re captured by the chimera and put in a cell, and you just happen to still have your gun. If the chimera are that stupid, why the hell haven’t we won yet? In all fairness the campaign is ok, it’s not crazily fun, but it’s not boring either. I just found it especially bland and uninspired. There was no sense of atmosphere to it, which is why I’d almost wish that the campaign was a little shorter.

Though the redeeming feature for me is the multiplayer, and not the crazy interwebs multiplayer, though that’s mainly due to the fact that everyone who’s still playing it are crazy good. Though the greatest multiplayer is the 4 player split screen. Sitting down with four of your friends and turning off all weapons and use grenades only, you will have even more fun than low-grav gravity hammers on Halo 3. Mainly due to the fact that there’s a flame bomb grenade thing, it’s like that one they use at the end of Underworld 2 where it releases gas then PHOOM!, everything dies.

Really Resistance is an “eh” game, but for £7.99 it’s well worth it. Also a little hint don’t buy the platinum edition, look around a bit first for the original copy because they’re cheaper. For those who want to know where to buy it now, here are some links:

So you’ve probably heard the announcement list from E3, sequels all of them. Now I personally don’t mind sequels, I know many people would argue that it shows lack of original thinking and blah blah blah, but I like sequels. Some of my favourite games ever were sequels; Half Life 2, UT2004 and TF2. Though the main difference I’ve noticed with all of these games that made them so good when they first game out is just how long it took them to come out. The shortest was UT99 to UT2004, which I hope you can tell that it was a 5 year gap between them. Whereas Modern Warfare 2 it’s only been 2 years since CoD4 and one year since CoD5. And of course look at L4D2, they’ve only just released the SDK for L4D and they’re releasing a second one, and what we’ve seen is very similar.

The main thing that’s changed I think is the pressure from publishers and investors on video games. Since, unfortunately, as the industry expands it will become less and less about good games, but more and more about selling games. Look at Half Life 2 for example, Valve made Half Life 1 and released in 1998, it got critical acclaim, winning dozens of Game of The Year awards, but the sequel didn’t come out until 6 years later. That just wouldn't happen today, because publishers are being able to put greater pressure on developers to make more games. I think this is a bad thing since, look at just how phenomenal Half Life 2 was. It surpassed all expectations, revolutionized many parts of gaming, and the engine it was based on was used by games for years to come. Whereas today, we get things like CoD5.

I guess Call of Duty is the prime example of gaming is becoming more about selling copies. Let’s have a look at the series. Call of Duty 1, the graphics weren’t that amazing, but the gameplay was insanely fun. Then two years later came Call of Duty 2, I don’t know about you but that game blew me away. It was the first WW2 shooter that achieved that true WW2 atmosphere, it didn’t feel like I was playing a game, it felt like I was in WW2. There were great improvements, in gameplay, multiplayer and most of all Graphics.

Then infinity wanted to try and do something great, they had an idea that they wanted to pour their time and passion into, but Activision didn’t like this because it was drawing out the development cycle. So Activision’s “solution” to this was to put Treyarch on the case, and we got the extremely mediocre Call of Duty 3, which for me at least, almost destroyed my faith in the franchise. Though finally Infinity Ward’s dream was finished and they released Call of Duty 4, and it was awesome. I think it’s only when a developer has enough time to let creativity flourish that get truly amazing games.

This is why my confidence in games like Left 4 Dead 2 and Modern Warfare is wavering, because I don’t want more of the same game. I can play it again, or mod it, or DLC, but i don’t just want another game which has different content. Which is why I don’t like CoD5 as much as I did CoD4, because CoD5 was just a WW2 mod for Modern Warfare, it was totally uninspired.

Sequels are great, but there comes a stage when it’s just publisher trying to exploit the consumer.

If you recall CnC3, the return of the true CnC franchise. And before you say it, no generals was not a real CnC game. CnC 3 was a phenomanal game, it brought the series back to its roots, it was the same, but better. And with the Red Alert series about to undergo the same style of refurbishment, you'd think i'd be pleased.

With the initial announcement, I was thrilled. As you can see from this post. Naturally, me being a huge Red Alert fan, I made it my mission to get into the beta. So I resorted to subscribing to File Planet just to get the beta.

I was expecting a revitalized version of Red Alert 2. With some new buildings, units or upgrades. But instead I found something different, something weird.

Now this new version is weird, is strange and different. But don't panic! There is a reason behind it. As you can see from this trailer.

See, they made the story line like that. Though there is an explanation for the weirdness, I still don't like it. Every time i build a spectrum cannon I feel like yelling at the screen "It's a f***ing prism tower!".

Though the changes are somewhat unsettling, they have managed to create a game experience that is still the same as the original. I'm not talking specifics, but I feel like this is what Red Alert was always meant to be.

For those of you who were fans of CnC3, you may find it hard to migrate to RA3. This is because the core gameplay is very different. In CnC3 it's basically tank spam, air spam or rocket troop spam. RA3 is extremely dependent on micro-management and tactics.

Thankfully they've streamlined the micro system, by having every unit's secondary ability activated by F. Also to cycle through specific types of units in one large group, just hit tab. Allowing you easy access to their abilities.

Perhaps the largest change in the game is the redesigned economy system. There are no more fields of gems or gold, but instead they are replaced by ore mines. This does sevaral things well. This means that you dont have to worry about your harvesters as much because they go about 2 feet before they reach the mine. But perhaps the best thing about it is that it forces players to fight for territory, since these mines are spread across the entire map, and the only way to get a decent amount of money from them is to plop an ore refinery right next to them.

Also another way they've forced players to move around more is to make these new things called Surveillance Towers, or something to that affect can't quite remember. Basically, you  have to catch one of these with an engineer, then they give you a massive area which you can now see. This makes intelligence a key part of gameplay.

Perhaps one of the biggest change to the gameplay is build mechanics. These differ between the three factions, Soviets, Allies and Empire of the Rising Sun. The Allies have the classic build mechanic, build in side bar then plop on map. But, there's no more base expansion from builders. So no more base creeping. You can only expand through Prospectors(Harvesters) Their expansion ability works like the surveyors in CnC3.

The Russians have a slightly different build mechanic, you click on the building you want in the sidebar, and you can choose where it goes on the map instantly. Then it slowly builds on the map. The pro here is that you can build multiple buildings from one production queue, if you have the cash. Of course your buildings are vulnerable while their being built. They have to expand like the allies too.

The Empire of the rising sun is perhaps the most unique of the 3. When you click on the side bar to make a building it builds in there. Once it is done, you dont place it on the map, but instead a small boxy vehicle called a core appears at your construction yard. Think of it as a building in a box. You can move these anywhere on the map. And just unpack them where you want.

I was expecting Red Alert 3 to be a revitalised version of Red Alert 2. I didn't get that. I got much much more.
