Kotaku just ran a story detailing the price of a number of soon-to-be-released avatar clothing for the Xbox 360. The majority of the items shown are related to specific games like Fable II and Halo with a few options from a brand called Recessionista that I've never heard of. Basically, Microsoft is trying to get users to pay to advertise their products while they're on a paid service to begin with. I'm not doubting the cleverness of this on a business level. It's a genius business idea, but there's a lot of business ideas that work well in theory but are totally bootsy in practice.

This arrangement creates nothing but animosity and resentment in me. It's an extremely arrogant move on Microsoft's part. However, the sad fact of the matter is simply this: probably about 30-50% of Xbox Live users will buy something from the initial offering of clothing. The revenue generated from that 30-50% will most likely turn a decent profit. The fact that a profit was turned will cause this trend continue and the majority of the clothing will continue to cost money. And all the whining and complaining from people like me will be worth exactly squat.

It's optional, so I don't really care about it, plus they already gave us a bunch of free clothing options too.
And unlockable Avatar clothes in games is an awesome idea, I actually think 'Splosion Man is doing it.

In the 'Splosion Man description on Xbox.com it says you can unlock avatar items.
I've yet to do so, or know if I even can yet. But it's a promising start for Free avatar accessories.

You don't need to buy it...If people want to buy it, they will buy it. There's no shady or "arrogant" about this. As stupid as I personally think it is to buy clothes for your avatar, if people want to they will and it's not Microsoft's fault for capitalizing on that.

@Joseppie:  you make a good point. A lot of people are going to buy into this, the same people who bought gifts for their friends over facebook. In a way, its a good idea and microsoft is a business and they have to find ways to make more money  and stay ahead of their competition, even if its exploiting stupid people.

I guess I don't see the controversy here. If people don't buy into it, it will stop. If they do, then it has every right to continue. I am not a big Avatar fan, but I have friends who, particularly since the start of the 1 vs 100 beta, obsess over the look of their avatar. I am all for calling out "LOL Micro$oft" when I see it, but sometimes an online clothing store is just an online clothing store.

great, this is going to be making microsoft more money. people will buy these kinds of things. idk who would buy these things. it is a way for developers to get their name out there. avatars aren't really known all that much. u barely use avatars for anyting.

I really wouldn't mind if they were game related ads, but stuff like Nike and McDonalds just seems stupid. I do like the idea of the Game Awards system, which you find items for your avatar in-game, I'd love to see a Lancer (Gears of War) on my Avatar.

I second Matty's words.  Giant Bomb avatar accessories are the only ones I'll buy if MS ever decides to allow gaming websites to release stuff.

@CL60: It's a big deal because companies watch each other and then make stupid marketing strategies from them: Horse Armour, Street fighter 4 costumes, Lara Croft Swimsuits, Sims 3 clothing Store and now Avatar clothing and toys. It's called a "Stupidity Tax". We used to get this stuff for free, stop buying it and we will again. Especially the SF4 costumes and the Tomb Raider stuff, your paying to unlock stuff already on the disc!

@CL60: The big deal is that both your scenario and this scenario is like the worst thing ever. Both because companies put this shit into their system, and because fucktards actually buy them. They don't offset each other. Actually people would probably argue that Home is more valid, because Sony don't charge you for playing games online (which would be great if their online service has anywhere near as good as Live, but that's another matter....)

@Joseppie: I think it stinks that MS are charging money for this. But dumb people will pay for it and MS knows that. We as consumers have a lot more power then corporation would like us to know. Saying it is the nature of business and agreeing with it is dumb. Its not the nature of the business, its greed corporate greed.

Why not save the 200-300 points, then the next time you have 200-300 points left over you'll have enough for a game?

If it turns out to be a service like the gamer pics, where free ones are available for download as basic advertising for a product, that's fine.  But I doubt I'd ever pay for avatar clothing.  I think the idea of making some of  them unlockable through game achievements is a brilliant idea.

But, you can also unlock some items from games eventually. Whether developers will do that or not, I'm not sure. But hey, people will buy it, and unlock most types of microtransactions, the Avatar equipment never "expires".

Kotaku just ran a story detailing the price of a number of soon-to-be-released avatar clothing for the Xbox 360. The majority of the items shown are related to specific games like Fable II and Halo with a few options from a brand called Recessionista that I've never heard of. Basically, Microsoft is trying to get users to pay to advertise their products while they're on a paid service to begin with. I'm not doubting the cleverness of this on a business level. It's a genius business idea, but there's a lot of business ideas that work well in theory but are totally bootsy in practice.

This arrangement creates nothing but animosity and resentment in me. It's an extremely arrogant move on Microsoft's part. However, the sad fact of the matter is simply this: probably about 30-50% of Xbox Live users will buy something from the initial offering of clothing. The revenue generated from that 30-50% will most likely turn a decent profit. The fact that a profit was turned will cause this trend continue and the majority of the clothing will continue to cost money. And all the whining and complaining from people like me will be worth exactly squat.
