If you need a good video tutorial I have been watching EpicNameBro on Youtube. His stuff got me through a couple of issues. Also there is a cheap way to farm souls in the forest if you are interested :)
I only used two weapons the entire game: Drake sword and then a +5 Black knight's halbard. With 50 str I was doing over 500 a hit, I could 2-shot the Capra demon's in the Hell area. A titanite demon would only take 6 hits. It's a slow weapon so it's useless for PVP but it liked it for PVE.
I found the actual fighting mechanics in Dark way more streamlined. I can actually pull off a riposte on a regular basis, something I only managed to do once my entire Demon's career. I found Dark easier that Demon's though, maybe because I had invested a fair amount of time in Demon's and new From's level mechanics. Take your time, do your research, and take a break when you get frustrated and this game is a delight. Play it like an FPS or treat death as a failure instead of a game mechanic and you will wonder why you wasted 60$.
I played a ton of demon souls and I never understood why the gaming media constantly go on about how difficult the game is, I personally did not think it was that hard, If you played smartly you could easily go hours without dying and never once did I lose my souls as I was always able to get back to my blood stain.
I kept thinking the version that came out in the U.K was dumbed down but my friend had imported it before release and after playing the U.S version I found no difference, The game was unforgiving in terms of modern titles but since I am 29 and remember playing single levels in games for days upon days trying to get past one point maybe why I did not think it was as tough as everybody made out, In fact a lot of people I have spoken to that have actually played allot of the game say the same thing, It's mainly people who never got past the first couple of hour or have not played it at all that say its too hard.
I think a lot of people found this game tricky because it's mechanics are so vague. It's not really obvious what upgrading an item with clearstone does for instance and therefore how to use it . The Large Sword of Moonlight doesn't tell you that it's unblockable. There are many details that just aren't explained. I, for one, love reading a good wiki. The anticipation of getting an awesome weapon and then actually managing to overcome the obstacles to get it far outweigh stumbling upon something not knowing what it does and then ditching it only to find out later on it was awesome. Some people (e.g. Vinny) hate reading a FAQ though. If you don't want to read a FAQ you might find yourself a little lost in Demon's Souls. If you like reading a FAQ then enjoy. I don't think anyone considers dying in this game an actual factor in the difficulty, it's simply a game mechanic. If you are treating death as a failure then you have missed the point of this game. It's a mechanism to build tension. All your currency is on the line and you are betting it all whenever you go against the next challenge.
Another reason to stick with Steam over Origin. Valve is a company for gamers who stopped a scumbag publisher. +1 Valve
Oh yeah steam is fantastic. Just today I tried to open up Civ 5 after letting it sit for a few months. Steam won't let me. Has my computer changed? Nope. Has the steam client? Yep. It took it's sweet time updating and restarting itself not to mention posting it's spammy adverts all over my computer while it did and now it won't let me start my game. Yeah, steam's a dream come true. What a marvel!! Yet another way for a company to get between me and the game I bought, spam me with games I don't want to buy and not let me play unless it feels like it or I go through a lengthy debug session with the mods telling me it's my fault unless I can prove otherwise. Needless to say I'll not buy another game on that POS.
