Well probably the same reason you're out of touch with what they know.  It's all in what you grew up with and what you're used too. Couple that with the fact that technology changes so quickly and comes on so fast they have not time to adapt. I beat it a couple months ago but if I remember  I basically had good armor and ran through alot of the enemies. It was crazy.

The game is pretty hard. But overall I liked it. My biggest problem with it is that key story elements can be passed over a little to easily.   *possible vague spoiler?*  In order to get the true ending you have to go back to a lab you've already been too. Or use the gauss gun trick like I did :D

It's usually for easy access to out of game menu.   The GTA series is the only one that comes to mind that loads straight to game. Though sometimes I think their in game menus are alittle odd. It works well for the most part. That said it never bothered me to press start.
