Games I always pronounced incorrectly while growing up

I grew up through the 80s and 90s incorrectly pronouncing these games. As a young child I was actually a very good reader and speller - even as a first grader I had no problem with titles for the 5200 like Countermeasure or Centipede, but I managed to have the games on this list completely wrong. Around 1996 or so the internet began to inform me of my ignorance.

List items

  • I guess it's "kicks." For me it was "quicks." Qix and Qantas remain the two entities ballsy enough to skip over the mandatory "u" after their "q."

  • This shit ain't fair. It's "kah-gay?" Really? How is a kid supposed to know that?

  • I guess I took the missing "gay" from The Legend of Kage and stuck it here instead. It was always Ninja Gay-den to me.

  • Somehow this always came out of my mouth as "Gol-o-go Thirteen." I don't even know why, it's not like this one is tricky. I could pronounce Duke Togo's name like a pro though.

One time as an elementary schooler I saw an ad in an issue of Gamepro for a free Golgo 13 comic. I sent away for it. Inside, it depicted a guy getting shot in the head. Sweet!

  • KARA-TEEKA is so much better than "karate-ka" that I don't care that it's "wrong." Kara-teeka. Kara-teeka. Kara-teeka. Kara-teeka.
