Kawika's Games Journal of 2015

5/23/2015

Its late but I will be brief. After banging my head against a wall and getting no wear in Bloodborne, I finally picked up and finished The Witcher 2. I was making good headway till Destiny came out last fall and I thought I had put it down forever. The game was very satisfying and I think I put way more thought into how to build Geralt than I needed to. I choose Iroveth's path. I hope when I pick up The Witcher 3 I remember what choices I made in the past.

5/12/2015

Totally forgot about this list. Tried to add a bunch of stuff that I have been doing for the past 3 months.

Quick recap. I bought a CRT for retro gaming. Hooked up my old NES and PS2 to it. Not long after I repurchased a Wii and got a bunch of Virtual Console games. Now I am starting up a Wii collection. I think the big issue with the console was that it didn't look very good on HDTV but having a good SD CRT makes all the difference in the world. I am loving the Scan lines and Sprites.

I also bought a New 3DS XL and have been collecting more games than playing them. Having a large back log on a hand held has never been a problem for me because I always seem to find time to enjoy them after a while. I still play my GBA SP to this day.

I have too many gaming choices of late. Its a good problem to have. I am going to have to make some hard cuts but I don't think I can play Bloodborne, The Witcher 3 and Batman this summer. I might as well just skip batman and wait for the game of the year version.

2/16/2015

I didn't intend on 2015 as the year of playing retro titles and remakes but I am really enjoying this. Who cares about new games?... Well, I do a little.

1/15/2015

Halo CE in the Master Chief Collection was my first finished game of 2015. I find it odd that this was the game that got me into first person shooters and changed me as a gamer from that point on. I remember back then I played inverted like I was flying an airplane. I am not sure how much gaming one can do with a new baby here but I hope I can sneak 20 minutes here and there and finally finish something once in a while.

I had to sell Dragon Age Inquisition to my bro. This is not the time to take on hundred hour rpgs that require you to be in front of a tv for that duration. I wish more western style rpgs would make it to mobile platforms.

Another Year has started and I totally flopped on my level tracking last year. I plan on keeping up with my game journal this year. Although, I suspect this year will have a lot less games than previous years I will try to keep up with this the best I can.

List items

  • 1/15/2015:

Halo 1 Finished. First game of 2015 complete. Seems odd but I enjoyed this campaign more than I enjoyed destiny's campaign. I enjoyed Destiny's mechanics more but this game still holds up pretty well in the MCC. Its worth the nostalgia to run through this game again.

I played it on heroic and I found it manageable. I think, I will play the other halos on normal. I really don't care about the achievements and I have too much else to play to worry about legendary runs.

    1/11/2015:

Halo 1 Heroic Run: Sure I probably could do it on Legendary but this is an OLD game and I am doing this more for nostalgia than to prove something to those that inspect my Halo profile.

  • 1/20/2015

Bayonetta has been finished. What a wonderfully weird game. I really enjoyed it and I am excited to move onto Bayonetta 2. I think the game aged pretty well and I thought the story was your typical Anime style nonsense but even still I enjoyed the hell out of it.

    1/11/2015:

Currently playing this on the Wii U. It was a nice pack in with Bayonetta 2. I am really enjoying it but it is pretty dated. Despite that I find myself returning a few times a week and clearing a level or two before I go to bed.

  • 2/1/2015

I finished the finale event. I may come back to it and do some more of the bucket list stuff but I've pretty much had my fill of this game, for now...

Anyway, what a fun racer. I haven't enjoyed a racing game this much since Burnout Paradise. That said, I think I am never going back to Need for Speed. I prefer this to NFS for basically the lack of cops. This game had some really well designed tracks and rallies. Anyone who likes arcade racers with enough elements to please those who prefer the sim style racers too.

Did I mention that this game is beautiful? Well, it is. I am really glad I sprung for this game after the holidays.

Beat it. Holy crap my favorite brawler from my youth holds up to this day. Can't get over how ahead of its time it was. I can't wait for the Kickstarter Sequel to come out.

  • 4/8/2015 - NES/Wii VC on a CRT.

I made it to world 8-2 without warping. Man this game is a lot harder than I remember it.

  • 4/10/2015 - NES/Wii VC on a CRT.

This was my favorite of all the Marios until the 16 bit era. Such a great game and holds up much better than a lot of other NES era games.

  • 5/4/2015

Nothing like going back to a game you've put hundreds of hours into and you still want more. I took a Demon Hunter to 70 for season 3 and also have leveled more than 100 paragon levels. I hate to put this down because I am having a lot of fun but there is too much I have to beat to keep playing games I have beaten dozens of times in the past.

  • 5/4/2015

Beat this game. What a love letter to the 8 bit era. Since I have been playing a ton of 8 bit games as of late it really does away with the bullshit of that era but also embraces what made it excellent. I am not sure I care to replay it but it looked damn great on my Vita. Too bad the dev didn't include a scan line shader.

  • 5/7/2015

So this was a neat game. I always appreciate a good 2D Mario game. Its sad but nothing they have done in 2D can hold a candle to Super Mario World. I really hope Mario Maker shakes up this trend because I'd rather just replay any old Super Mario Game than this.

  • 5/9/2015

Pulled out my copy of Tetris. Man how good was this game? I know you can't beat it but I got to level 9 or 10. Its pretty good considering I haven't played this version in 25 years. I still think the DS version is by far my favorite.

  • 5/23/2015

I finally finished Witcher 2. After 3 false starts and an almost walk away and never come back. The hype for The Witcher 3 kicked in hard and I was able to finish chapter 3 and defeat the forces that stood in my way. I chose Iorveth's path and I really enjoyed that. Will I ever play the Witcher 2's other path? I don't think I will. It was a fun game for its time but it felt really dated as I played. Especially after playing Bloodborne. Hopefully, The Witcher 3 handles a little better in the combat department.

    1/2/2015

For whatever reason I got side tracked with Destiny while I was attempting to finally beat this game. I hope I still remember how to play it once I come back.

  • 6/29/2015

Nothing like a new game in the franchise to come out to get the fire under your ass to finish a game. Anyway, AC was pretty fantastic. I was actually sad to see it go so quick because I wanted to get to Arkham Knight.

  • 7/5/2015

Eshop sale impulse purchase. I miss these old brawlers. The only thing I didn't like were the clones of Blaze (the flipping twins).

  • 7/10/2015

I always wanted to beat this classic. I am really sad I got this particular version as I thought it came with the classic graphics mode. Sadly, it was an odd 3D remake of the game. I found it to be very old school and very frustrating at times. The constant deleveling of weapons whenever you got injured got a little old. Final boss encounter had 4 different encounters and it took a while before I was able to master the early phases because it gave you no health back. I am probably not going to keep this version in my collection.

  • 4/20/2015

Cleared all but 3 of the bosses. Should probably hurry up and get that done so I can do the Wily stages.

  • 5/12/2015

Picked this up on sale last week. Man I don't know if I hate it or love it. I haven't been able to down the first boss but I have been close. Can't wait to go home and play it again.

  • Started this in 2014: Would like to finish this after I beat Bayonetta 1.

  • 80 hours in and I started it back in 2013. I need to finish this game.

  • 2/2/2015 Update: I may trade this in. I am just not into these monster hunter style games.

    This intro sucks.

  • Picked this up on android. I plan on playing this again.

  • Got this on the cheap. I am not the biggest fan of Ubisoft games as of late but for the price I figured why not.

  • Only put a hour or two into this game. Seems silly and fun. Not ready to commit to play this yet.

It was a short game. I think I am pretty much done with halo. Halo 6 will be a rental for sure. I used to enjoy beating these games on Legendary but I just don't even like the moment game anymore.

  • Finished 11/10

What a treat. After numerous attempts to beat it on Emulator, Virtual Console I finally beat it on my SNES. Easily one of my favorite SNES games. Still holds up in 2015.

  • Traded in. 11/14/2015

PS4 version doesn't run as well as I would have liked it to. Got most of my money back. I will buy this again when I get a better PC.

  • Started 11/14/2015

What a fun game so far. Lets see how long it takes to beat (if ever).

  • Finished 11/16/2015

Got this as a reward for Club Nintendo. Kind of Fun but not worth the asking price of a physical copy. Its a better version of the N64 which hasn't aged well. Has anything aged well on the N64? Might as well Remake Mario 64 for the 3DS so I never have to plug my N64 in again.
