Begging for Remakes
Games that, for one reason or another, warrant being conceptually resurrected in modern fashion by developers who know what the flip they're doing.
1. Battle Chess

Similar to the Mutant League games, Battle Chess takes Chess (boring) and combines it with the pieces actually fighting (not boring). Just remake the game, and mocap about 10 different combat sequences between any given two pieces. Randomize those animations so things don't get too stale, throw in a hard rock soundtrack along the lines of Kingdom Under Fire and you have a chess videogame that doesn't suck *guitar wail*

2. Herzog Zwei

My best friend's brother tried to approach this game with his years of amateur study regarding true battlefield tactics. His enthusiast's knowledge failed to match my ability to transform my giant walking commander robot into a flying jet which reigned hellfire onto his best laid plans. A fast, competitive RTS that in my opinion still serves as a testament to how real-time strategy on consoles should be done. Less resource management, more transforming robots.

3. Mutant League Football

A brilliant idea, just poorly executed. If someone could pick up the pieces, make a solid game of football with a healthy dose of crazy violence, this would easily capture the folks who hate Madden / re: don't watch football on television. I'm talking about most gamers here.

4. Mutant League Hockey

Same as MLF, it has a great concept that just doesn't measure up to being fun over a long period of time. Take the NHL 09 engine, make everyone zombies, make fighting a lethal affair and make the puck explode after power plays.

5. X-COM: UFO Defense

New coat of paint with a fully 3d engine. Leave the rest alone, for the love of god!

6. Solar Jetman: Hunt for the Golden Warpship

What a fun little game! Hard as balls in the later levels, Solar Jetman: Rearmed would make for a great downloadable title offering old school difficulty.

7. Jane's Combat Simulations: Longbow 2

Longbox 2 was amazing, especially in the multiplayer coop department. 4 players, flying in pairs as wingmen, two in Apache Longbows providing cover to two in Blackhawks dropping and picking up soldiers. It was like taking nerdy male bonding and merging it with a multiplayer, 3d version of Choplifter.

8. Bionic Commando

Just kidding. Although this serves as an example of how it's done.

9. Strider

The original Strider on the NES, after I got the rental copy working using the blow/grinding insert technique, was a great action game that, if given the Bionic Commando: Rearmed treatment, would amount to an unchecked measure of awesome. The Sega Genesis version was a great arcade port as well. However, it wasn't nearly as deep as the NES version, and could be easily finished within an hour of play.

10. Karate Champ

Hey look, a fighting game where buttons aren't involved! Using only dual-joysticks, Karate Champ offers some compelling if rough gameplay that could definitely be further explored using modern tech. I could see something sim-ish along the lines of Virtua Fighter by someone who takes martial arts seriously. Data East, if you aren't defunct, this could be your comeback!
