1. Half-Life 2 |
2. Rome: Total War |
3. Animal Crossing: Wild World |
4. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin |
5. Bionic Commando Rearmed
My childhood: Rearmed. |
6. Jak II
I bought this, but haven't played it. Jak I is the holdup, and it's not as easy as I'd hoped. |
7. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Not as good as 3, but the final leg in Solid Snake's story is worth the trip. What is the deal with Ocelot in this game? Seriously. WTF. |
8. Katamari Damacy
Japanese game developers discover controlled substances. Katamari Damacy is the result of that discovery. |
9. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Some of the finest platforming on the PS2. |
10. Jak 3
See description for Jak II re: Jak I is hard. |
11. Kingdom Hearts
One part-Squaresoft yearbook photoshoot, one-part Disney marketing campaign, all emo. |
12. Kingdom Hearts II
Square and Disney do it again with another intriguing combination of worlds. Still emo. |
13. ICO
If only more games contained videogame violence that resolved around beating the crap out of ethereal, wispy forms with a big stick that may as well be a cardboard tube. |
14. Shadow of the Colossus
Penny Arcade summed it up best: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/10/21/ |
15. Warhawk
Hot multiplayer dog fighting action. |
16. GRID
While not really a sim like Gran Turismo or Forza, Grid beats these in the funfactor department. |
17. X-COM: UFO Defense
Best TBS game I've ever played. Hopefully Irrational Games is working on a sequel. |
18. Metal Gear Solid
The original is still quite good. |
19. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
The equivalent of The Return of the Jedi, MGS 2's story takes the series' into a nose-dive that only a successive prequel can alleviate, and an additional sequel to ultimately disseminate. |
20. Grand Theft Auto III
The game that helped set in motion countless manhours of trying to pass senseless videogame violence legislation. Truly the downfall of our country. |
21. Ratchet & Clank
it's Jak and Dakter, with guns! |
22. Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
More Ratchet and Clank action, if more polished. |
23. Daxter
One of the finest PSP games available. |
24. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Arguably the bestest Castlevania since Symphony of the Night. Obtaining skills and firing guns are a nice change of pace. |
25. The Red Star
What happens when you take Final Fight and combine it with Ikari Warriors, and render it in 3d? Hot cooperative action, that's what. |
26. Final Fantasy XII
One of my favorite Final Fantasy games. It's got the most comprehensible storyline since IX, at least. |
27. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Rockstar managed to capture everything great about the 80s in this sequel; Miami Vice, Scarface, and Flock of Seagulls. |
28. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
I was initially attracted to this game due to being heavily exposed to early 90's gangsta rap as a child. I've never been truly white ever since. |
29. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
A fantastic RPG that begs you not to stop playing. Seriously, if you stop and start playing like months later you'll be totally lost. Maybe I should start over... |
30. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
Devil May Be Hard as Balls is more like it. They say the Special Edition is easier. I say DMC 3 puts hair on a man's chest. It doesn't really, if anything it keeps you indoors even more, preventing any real trigger of testosterone in your system which I think makes hair grow. I don't know, I'm not a doctor. |
31. Metal Slug Anthology
I have the PS2 version. Japanime Contra with tons of value! |
32. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
A great fighter that rewards patience and technique over turtleing with fireballs and crouching uppercuts. I'm talking to you Tarek. |
33. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
A survival horror game that's frightening in a way that most other survival horror games are not, Eternal Darkness evoked nostalgia from the Lovecraftian Alone in the Dark. It's also scary that Tarek STILL HAS MY COPY. Give it back. Also if you don't need that old PS2 I'd like to Indian give that as well. |
34. Pikmin 2
I never played Pikmin 1, but I heard some noise about it being unreasonable in terms of how long days take or whatever. All I can really say is that the second game definitely doesn't require knowledge of the first to get all the enjoyment out of it. A fun family favorite, if I were to ever have kids. Which is never going to happen unless my seed inadvertently dismantles reproductive barriers. |
35. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
I haven't really gotten past the 2nd level in this game, but I loved the cartoony style and I'm a sucker for platformers, something the PS2 isn't lacking. |
36.
The first Warhammer 40k game to not suck since the original Space Hulk. True story. |
37. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade
How great expansion packs are done, really. |
38.
My first Civ game. Fun to play, and highly replayable, though I have to wait about a month or two between games to let the monotony of starting from scratch fade. |
39. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
It feels kind of weird being a 30-something dude playing an RPG that resolves around the lives of Japanese school children. That summon powers by firing a spiritual handgun at their heads. What the crap, Japan? |
40. Resistance: Fall of Man
It reminds me of Doom for the N64. It plays like an old school FPS, but with fancypants graphics and sound. |
41. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
3d camera makes this game a worthwhile purchase even for folks who bought Snake Eater. It really changes how you play the game. |
42. The Eye of Judgment
I picked this up for $35 at Target. The camera alone costs $39.99, usually. After playing a few rounds with my roommate, I'm hooked. More booster packs, please! |
