As a rule, Atari 2600 games are terrible and are not worth bringing into any given conversation on gaming except to place ridicule and wax nostalgia on games that seemed a lot better when you were six. However, there are a few that warrant exception from the rule. These are they.

You know you love them: sometimes strange, semi-inspired NES games that generally just don't cut the mustard when it comes to your hard earned lawnmowing money. But hey, they're still fun to rent from the local convenience store.

Games that, for one reason or another, warrant being conceptually resurrected in modern fashion by developers who know what the flip they're doing.

These characters are more or less burned into our collective gaming psyche. If aliens find us, they'll probably mistake Mario for a kind of Jesus and burn our planet alive with a chemical bomb that scorches the Earth's surface in about 30 seconds or so.

DOS, or Disk Operating System, was a fertile environment for new genres in gaming in the 1980's and early 90's. This list represents their best efforts from that period.
