Ridiculously deep-voiced transexual, doing an impression of Storm from the old X-men cartoon: "My name is Bolo Santosi."

" If I had to sum the demo up in one word I'd say it was janky.  Nothing feels quite right, in fact it feels like the game could do with (in all areas) a bit more calibration so everything feels, looks and plays better and more accurately. "
It makes a really disappointing first impression, I think. Most of us play quite a lot of games throughout the year, so I was sitting here, comparing every aspect of JC2 to other games I've played, because in my mind I had certain expectations. I assumed the diving and parachuting would be similar to San Andreas and The Ballad of Gay Tony. I assumed the shooting would be like most Pandemic or Volition games, and I assumed that the driving would suck, the story would be uninteresting, and the voice acting would be horrendous.

It certainly seems some of those latter thoughts were true, as the voice acting seems almost intentionally cheesy and over the top, and the story's likely to be excuse after excuse to shoot things and blow them up. That being said, the driving's not nearly as big of a problem as it's been in other games of the genre, because you'll rarely need a car for longer than a few minutes, if that. I'm so spoiled by GTAIV's driving physics, that anything less than that barely feels functional, but driving a motorcycle full speed into a guardrail, while being chased by a jeep of armed enemies, then pulling my chute just in time to watch them all die in a fiery explosion, as I glide gently down the side of a cliff? It's just fun.

So yeah, it's growing on me. It has enough highpoints to offset the low, I think. I agree completely, though, that they could go from a "fun but flawed game" to something truly impressive with some fairly simple tweaks to the aiming and the camera, as well as a few other things. Suppose the release is too close to hope for that, though.

@Binman88: Maybe the port has the technical power, but lacks the artistic touches? It was like that with a lot of the games I played when I could afford multiple copies of things. The GTA series looked much better on the PC at the time, clearer and more crisp textures, but it lost a lot of personality, graphically. Vice City, especially. The neon lights and and subtle effects were all very plain looking on the PC, despite the improved texture resolution. So it might be a console-to-PC porting issue. I'd have to see both versions to really form an opinion.

@Jacy: Yeah, yours wasn't there when I started typing mine up, or I would have just replied.

Alright, I've been spending some more time exploring and messing around with the combat system, and I feel much more positively about it. I think there's definitely room for improvement, but most of the flaws can be worked around. You can essentially freefall and aim forward, still, but only with the chute open. Skydiving and base jumping itself seems to only be good for just falling straight to the ground, so rather than "Leap off a mountain, aim away from it, and pull your chute before you smack into the side.", it's "Leap off a mountain, immediately pull your chute, then glide your way down."

I think I got too used to pedaling my bike off the ramp on Mt. Chilliad, kicking it to the side, and freefalling down the side of the mountain. Oh, San Andreas. So ahead of your time.

EDIT:

Well, here's a tip for anyone who's having trouble with the combat: dual wield. Never paid attention to it before, but get a hold of a second one handed weapon, then hold right on the D-pad to wield them both. Pulling the left trigger to fire an automatic while pulling the right trigger for each shot of the pistol allows you to pick and choose the type of attack you'd prefer. It's a pretty neat system, each trigger set to one gun, that I haven't seen put to much use in the third person shooter genre. I think The Punisher did it that way. So yeah, it definitely makes it easier to fight off the groups of enemies.

Also, has anyone else found the plane in the demo? Getting up to the highest point, then surfing on top is pretty fun. Hands down the longest freefalls and most gorgeous scenery I've seen in a game. Dropping from an incredible height like that, everything still looks lush and detailed up there.

Favorite finds so far have to be the plane, the one handed grenade launcher you can dual wield, and the mini-gun. Big, destructive bastard, that one. That military base was pretty fun, too. It's like a deep hole in the ground, with walkways all the way down. Pretty fun escape on the way back up, when it's all exploding. This game can be really, really exciting, I've found.

I was near death and this sniper had his laser sight pointed at me, so I catapulted myself up into the air, pulled my chute, swooped down at him, pulled him out of the tower with my hook, then landed in a roll, just as machine gun fire started tearing up the ground near where I was standing. I'm right on the edge of a cliff, and I spot the helicopter above me. Like I said, I had very little health left, so I went running for it, jumped off the cliff in a suicide dive, attached to the bottom of the helicopter right before I hit the ground, then flipped up, shot  the passenger, hijacked it and flew off while everyone shot at me. Few games give you the opportunity to pull off this kind of craziness outside of a scripted mission. Really impressed.

Playing through it some more, I think not being able to control yourself too much while skydiving has to be the biggest problem I'm having so far. The other parachute-happy sandboxers have programmed my brain to think a certain way. Seems like, when you dive on here, you pretty much fall straight down, unless I just suck and need to play more. =P

I like the mechanics for the grappling hook and parachute, but I'm finding that the camera seems too limited, and the combat's sorta' iffy. You can't look straight down when flying, parachuting, or skydiving, and the camera seems to randomly choose when to zoom in on you. The game could be improved greatly with the addition of a couple camera angle options to toggle through, as you can't really tell what you're falling towards, as it is.  The other thing I noticed about skydiving is that there's no way to bring your arms in and dive forward, like any other game with this feature, so attempting to get more distance on your dives doesn't seem very intuitive.

As for the combat, the aiming feels sort of off right now. There's no auto-aim, which is fine, but the manual aim doesn't feel very smooth to me, and the canned animation for lobbing grenades is odd. You can't throw one while moving, it looks like, so if you're running away from the spot you're looking at, rather than toss it over his shoulder, he jerks around awkwardly and does the same throw, each and every time. You also can't move while crouching, so any thoughts of moving in and out of cover are gone, which is a shame with the amount of people that are gunning you down. I think the Red Faction/Saints Row system would have worked fine in a game like this, but it feels like the combat's an afterthought right now.

I like the movement and the way you interact with the environment, but so far I find the combat to be more frustrating than entertaining. I'll mess around with the aim sensitivities and see if it improves before I judge it too harshly, but it's got that "Franken-game" feel at the moment, where are the ideas are sound, but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired, as a lot of the features have been done better elsewhere. This is coming from someone who's been really hyped up for the game, so it's possible my expectations were too high.

Anyone else noticing the same things?

EDIT: I would like to point out that the graphics and the scale of the map is very impressive. I was having a blast getting around and exploring. I'm just put off by the camera and combat issues.
