The first Dead Rising was a big surprise to me. When I originally heard the pitch of "a zombie game from Capcom that isn't Resident Evil", I had no real interest. But it ended up being a blast, and the first game that made me glad I had bought into the new generation. Just all the different ways you could fight the zombies was great. Also, Frank West.
BioShock was also a big surprise. I had never played System Shock or any previous Irrational Game, and the little preview coverage I saw of it didn't leave me interested, but as soon as I played the demo, I needed to have it. Despite what everyone says, I actually really liked the combat in the game, and experimented with all the different powers and weapons.
Dragon Age: Origins as well. Never thought I could get so sucked into a (somewhat) old school style PC RPG, the story or the world drew me in really well and combat was a ton of fun.
Also No More Heroes, that game and it's sequel were just crazy in the best way possible. There's nothing I love more than a game with a bunch of awesome crazy bosses to fight.
