KillerFly: Best of 2009

Here is my best of 2009 list, the comments below explain what got these games into my top ten, as well as why the games in the bottom half of the list didn't quite make it to the top half.

Honorable Mentions:  Killzone 2, MadWorld, Demon's Souls, Modern Warfare 2, Trials HD

List items

  • Finally, I can stop being apologetic about my love for the Assassin's Creed franchise. The game's amazing story and combat were complimented by a cool economy system, awesomely weird glyph puzzles, and best of all, those oh-so-Sands-of-Time-like Assassin Tombs. No contest for my Game of the Year.

  • Take BioShock's concept of exploring an unknown space and trying to fight your way out of it while defeating the evil within, add in a ton of Batman fanservice, and you have Arkham Asylum. So well polished in just about every way. What made me realize how awesome this game was is how fun it was to take out a room full of guys WITHOUT using the gargoyles, and Scarecrow scenes in particular showed that RockSteady really cared about this game.

  • Okay, so I liked Prototype better than inFamous, sue me. Prototype, while frustrating in parts, was a game where is was just fun to move around, whether it was running through crowds, running up a building, or gliding across the city. And oh man, stealth consumption... just about the greatest thing ever.

  • inFamous introduced a really cool world and made you feel like a badass in it's own way. While I prefered Prototype, there will always be a place in my heart for grinding telephone poles and raining lightning down from the heavens.

  • I haven't been a big fan of Bioware games that aren't Jade Empire. KotOR never clicked with me and I'm currently on my third attempt at playing through Mass Effect, but a few hours into Dragon Age, I was hooked. After three weeks and 50 hours (playing the game on easy, because I suck at these kind of games), I had played through the whole game and eagerly anticipate the next DLC pack. Hell, I'd probably play it again if I didn't have other games that needed playing.

  • Considering my love of the Resident Evil series and the fact that RE4 was my Game of the Year 2005, there was no doubt RE5 would creep it's way somewhere in here. Playing RE5 with a friend is a blast, and the upgrade system can be super addicting. However, the single player experience isn't nearly as fun as RE4, and the linear level design is a step down from the somewhat "open" exploration of past RE games, so RE5 will have to settle for topping the bottom half of the list.

  • I love me some Ninja Gaiden, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma II basically fixes any problems I had with NG2 on the 360. The game no longer feels cheap, the new characters are fun to play as (besides Rachel), and the co-op is just crazy. This would be much higher on my list if it wasn't a somewhat improved re-release of a game from last year.

  • Also the winner for "Best Game to Play While Listening to a Podcast" Award. Dare I say Gearbox found a way to make getting experience by shooting things more addicting than Modern Warfare. Finally, all of the fun of grinding in an MMO without all those pesky "people" getting in my way, no sarcasm intended. My only gripe would be the lack of any depth to the storyline, which is pretty important to me in my games.

  • Uncharted was one of my top games of 2007. Loved the shooting, loved the platforming, loved the story. Uncharted 2 improved on all of things, and yet somehow, I wasn't blown away by it the way I was the first game. Maybe the new car smell is just gone for me. Regardless, another great experience from Naughty Dog.

  • I think the concept of adventure games is really cool, it's just that the comedic tone of most adventure games doesn't really appeal to me. That's why I couldn't be happier that Konami decided to take Silent Hill, remove the crappy combat, but make what is basically a horror-based adventure game.
