Ramblings 2: What is Black Metal?

Black Metal. Arguably the most sub, sub-genre and the most sub of all "main" genres: Heavy Metal. Black Metal is quickly becoming my favourite genre of music.

Right now 3 of my favourite bands reside within the confines of this genre (Wodensthrone, Drudkh and Wolves in The Throne Room) plus a litany of other bands that I personally class as some of the best I've ever heard. EVER! I'm serious here to me, to my ears, Drudkh's debut LP 'Forgotten Legends' stands up there with Led Zeppelin IV and Black Sabbath's Paranoid is terms of sheer musical brilliance. Black Metal band Enslaved are quickly becoming the heir's to Pink Floyd's throne and Darkthrone are one of the most punk bands currently producing music.

How the fuck did this happen?! I always thought Black Metal was what Immortal did in their videos.... ya kno.... stupid! But today as I was in the gym listening to Diadem of 12 Stars by Wolves In The Throne Room it struck me that I wasn't doing a manly thing like kicking a heavy bag or lifting something heavy and stuff... I was lost in the music. There is something about this genre that scratches every itch I have. If I'm pissed off I have Anaal Nathrakh. You want to zone out? I have Alcest or Enslaved for that. Want to feel all patriotic and stuff I pop on Wodensthrone, or Winterfylleth or Forefather! Want to hear something full of sorrow and passion? Ireland's Primordial have you covered there. Wanna punk out? Venom! Darkthrone! (early) Bathory! Wanna have your mind blown by crazy mind blowing melodies and proggy licks? Taake!  Arckanum! Woe!

It's crazy to me that so many attitudes, philosophies and sounds are all found within this extremely niche genre to the point where I feel I could do away with all music that does not fit here and still feel musically fulfilled. Hell even 'I' and channelling Motorhead and Black Sabbath! If you want to find a band that reflects your tastes or outlook on life, chances are they'll be one within Black Metal:
Misanthrope: Anaal Nathrakh.
Optimist: Alcest.
Self Harmer: Shining.
Satanist: Gorogoroth.
Christian: Horde.
Patriot: Wodensthrone/Primordial et al
Drug Addict: Blut Aus Nord
Nursery Rhymes: Ulver
Prog Head: Enslaved
Nazi Scum Bag: Fuck right off but you can find plenty of nazi or NSBM bands too.... unfortunately.
Folk fan: Drudkh
Drone fan: (new) Mayhem
Rock Fan: I
Monty Python fan:  The Meads of Asphodel
Shit music fan: Dimmu Borgir

Here's the thing about this genre. ANYTHING is welcome! It's all about rebellion at heart and the latest batch of bands over the last 10 years or so have spent their time REBELLING AGAINST WHAT BLACK METAL MEANS! Have you ever heard of this in any other genre? Band's intentionally going in a direction that the KNOW will alienate fans because they only care about their own opinion? Many bands have a attitude of "fuck the fans!" THIS IS A GOD SEND! True artists do not care about what anyone thinks of their art. Not the label, and certainly not the general public. True Black Metal* is True Art. You may hate it, but these bands could not care less, because they produce art and art by definition has to be self serving. Black Metal is the realm of true art. Music for music's sake and nothing more. It also happens to be the most diverse and rich genre in existence today.

Black Metal is ugly, beautiful, good and evil. It's a sledgehammer and a rapier. It's an embrace and it's a kick in the teeth.

I love Black Metal. You should too.

* Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir do not fall into this category. Because they are fucking atrocious.

I'm glad Ulver has been mentioned as their first albums are  basically what defines Black Metal in my opinion.

I had to stop reading (will continue in a second) when you mentioned "Wolves in the throne room" That is easily my favorite black metal band and "Two Hunters," is probably my favorite metal album.

By sub I just mean specification for a further style within Heavy Metal e.g. Doom, Death, Grind etc. I would't say you need to be Just black metal to belong to the group. For example Anaal Nathrakh are almost as much a Grind band as they are Black Metal, but imo that doesn't exclude them from either grouping if you follow me.

Sub sub? Nah. Many, MANY bands in the "extreme metal" spectrum are blackened. Perhaps as a pure sub-genre (which sounds like an oxymoron) though.

The blackest bands I've seen live are Vital Remains and Order of Ennead; and at best they would be considered blackened death.

Ahhh Metapocalypse. Adore that show :D I also remember someone either here or on metal storm who got into the genre through Brutal Legend! For some reason I found that to be awesome.

Also, anyone who mentions Spygate has already automatically -  although unintentionally - admitted they know nothing about football.

EDIT: The best thing about this entire tiff is the OP is going to ramble on about the inaccuracies of wikipedia, all while saying the exact same shit the wiki does.

Chat away.

Let's face it: The topic title has poor wording. It asks What is Black Metal?, not Do you like Black Metal? Now, I would simply say "I don't" along with why I don't and carry on but, we are presented with metal forum talking points by the OP which contradicts itself numerous times. When I say Hey, that's actually thrash, I'm challenged as someone who needs a history lesson. Well, it turns out I don't.

I figure if someone is going to make their stupidity public, it should be addressed accordingly.

Yes, the "gateway" theory. That's just a way of saying one band and/or genre is better than the other. Just say that instead instead of sounding preposterous. Nobody needs to listen to deathcore to get into death metal.

So yeah, excuse the higher-thinking for breaking down your dumb gateway facade you use to cover the fact that you think a band has to be "obscure" and unpopular to be worth the attention, King Bozo.

It's a totally subjective thing but generally I've found those who listen to the more "underground" black metal bands like Drudkh, Burzum, Deathspell Omega etc despise Dimmu for musically diluting their sound for commercial gain i.e. selling out. Personally I just found Dimmu to be kind boring and vastly overated, and I do what I always do when I feel a band is overrated; I call them shit lol.  CoF on the other hand are provably shit. Scientists proved it in 2001. Seriously. "
Fair enough!  Also echoing the "CoF is shit" statement. "

I just remember listening to them many years ago thinking "yeah this isn't bad". Haven't been to ontop of their current stuff though I do know they let go ICS Vortex. Heard the bass player they hired as a replacement quit literally the next day. Seems like they have problems keeping people around.

Also if anything is gonna get the younger generation into the genre it'll probably be Dethklok. Doesn't get more accessible then a weekly timeslot on a childrens tv network! Lol

See, this is why I didn't dissect your awesome posting. I didn't want to embarrass you but I'm on kick today.

First off, you are wrong. Why? Because you're killing your posting with your posting. In one hand, you're jerking-off BM because it's "true-art." In the other, you're telling everyone it's diverse and rich. Not to mention:

@King_Bonzo

said:

"BM has evolved. "

Into what? If something is pure and true, it doesn't need to evolve. It shouldn't be diverse. That's the complete opposite of what BM was all about. It sounds like you're making excuses for BM navigating away from the very thing that makes them so fucking "true."

BM went global. It's evolved alright. All those trips through the woods while toting battle axes didn't mean shit. The unthinkable happened: Black Metal caught on.

And for a bunch of bands that are "true" and don't care about what others think, they sure have no problem signing contracts with record companies to pay for rent. Yeah, see...even in the world of art, people still need to pay the bills. So don't think for a minute most of these guys are somehow more sincere than bands of other genre's, simply because they speak to you in magical ways through their shitty riffs. That middle video has a band who became successful with virtually zero air-play. They accomplished everything through making the music they wanted to make, without selling out to anyone. They didn't approach music with any less sincerity than your kewl underground bands.

Oh, and they sound 10 times better too.

How much you want to make a bet if this album wasn't titled what it is, nobody would deny this sounds like early Megadeth?

Heavy metal is so a sub-genre.

I'm glad you're now responding without any musical references. It's a good thing considering you don't know jack-shit. The fact you even had to mention CoF sucking says it all. Gotta get that pretense out of the way so you fall in line with the obscurity crowd.

Now, are you coming back again? Being The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf is fun for a while.

Right here, off the bat...utter fail. Heavy Metal isn't a sub of a main genre, it is a main genre. You would also help yourself to realize that the term "underground" is nowhere near as weighty as it was in the 90's. The internet has changed everything. Burzum is no more or less available to the public than the Beatles. The era of feeling cooler than the next guy because your shit is faster, darker and heavier along with having to find your music in some shithole in the city, is over.

EDIT: Oh, and a TREMENDOUS LOL at you sticking Primordial into a paragraph about BM. GTFO, dude.

You do realize true BM was never supposed to evolve, right? That kind of defeats the purpose of BM to begin with. And I already know the difference between thrash and BM. One actually takes some skill.

You're wrong. Flat out wrong. Cradle of Filth are what 13 year olds listen to when they want to rebel against their parents. They're not artists they're entertainers. Like DB they produce music to a template that's been proven to sell. COF are a product and an incredibly shoddy one at that.

And BM is what idiots who need to feel like they are part of a special kvlt listen to.  But you also said taste is subjective. So why are you calling Kenny's wrong?

LOL at you calling some of these bands artists while others entertainers. Hello pot, meet kettle. What a fucking hypocrite.

When did you start listening to music, last year?

" Out of curiosity why is Dimmu Borgir considered shit music?  I haven't listened to them in a loooooong fucking time but what I remember of them didn't immediately make me think "ugh shit music". "

Seriously.

Uh-huh.

Or you can tell when someone's argument has collapsed when they write off wiki as unreliable. It goes both ways, chief.

Maybe this topic should be for people who know the difference between thrash and actual BM? That would be nice.

Yeah, and you sure nipped that one in the bud.

You better go wash off your face paint now.

And find an actual singer, too.

Black Metal began as an inner circle of retarded Norwegian racists who were becoming pissy with Christianity while embracing their outcast lifestyle. Not to mention the genre has the least talented musicians in metal.
Black Metal began in England with Venom, Switzerland with Hell Hammer and Sweden with Bathory. Do some homework buddy :)  The least talented remark is purely subjective of course. But you're still wrong. "

Those were more thrash than BM, especially Venom. It wasn't an actual genre until Norway. Learn to listen, genius. "
You're wrong.  There is a reason Darkthrone and Mayhem and Burzum are refered to as the 2nd wave of black metal. It's because Venom, Hell Hammer and Bathory were in the first. Besides read the blog again I mention the variety within black metal and yes early Black Metal does sound like a faster more extreme version of thrash but then so does early Death Metal. Seven Churches and Altars of Madness share much with the thrash sound.  Besides your main gripes seems to be with the philosophy which was completely present in the first wave, and supposed racism which has only really been voiced by Varg Vikernes and then was never transferred to his music. Learn to read, listen, comprehend and learn. Look who knows how to use wikipedia.  I bet ur kewl for ur uber metal knowledge.

I can too:

 During the 1980s, a few
thrash metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. This so-called "first wave" included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost and Sarcófago. A "second wave" arose in the early 1990s, spearheaded by Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor. This scene developed the black metal style into a distinct genre.

You could easily argue for Blut Aus Nord as being the most talented band, not just in metal, but period, working today. DsO also as leagues ahead of the competition in terms of scope but their song writing falls a little for me.

Black metal was never supposed to have an audience. Too bad it did anyway.

Over there in Norway, the churches all burn down
Let's go dress in goth clothes and get painted like a clown
Awesome leather armbands with spikes like two feet long
Hair is parted down the middle, frowning like a frog

In league with the devil, talking Satan, skulls and hell
Making mommy mad, cause that's original
If you hate good music, then it can't hurt to go
Image-conscious assholes, black metal fashion show

I hope that you get hit by a bus. Why?
Black metal sucks
Careful not to smear your makeup
You suck
goth clothes and frowns, just like we discussed
Black metal sucks
Auuuuuuuuuugh What?
You suck

Blacke Foryst of Despayr, taking photos of the band
Put 'em up on myspace you're the envy of the land
Posing with a battleaxe and grimacing with hate
When you're done with this, figure skating at the lake

The music is best, it's got the hardest metal sound
Quickly riffing on one note is certain to astound
Dimly echoed drumming and some goat heads to distract
From the terrible screeching that you pass off as your act

I wish your black clothes would combust. Why?
Black metal sucks
You know what dude, you look like a schmuck
You suck
Singer sounds like a wounded duck
Black metal sucks
I'd rather listen to... us
You suck

You know how I know you look like a fool?
Lich King rules
We're the best band and we're super cool
We rule
Straight from the 80's and we're old school
Lich King rules
Running out of rhymes, so wading pool
Thrash is the rule

Yeah, not very talented either but they speak the truth.
