Cant help you with location but if your desperate you could always try getting into or running a post by post game. Its a lot slower and tends to be focused more heavily on the roleplaying side of things as a result but its generally pretty easy to get into.

They're generally around on places like gitp.com, somethingawful.com, rpg.net and really any rpg forum tend to run them. Your milage may very based on the game/community.

@thethirdrlm:

Funnily enough Pathfinder (as is all dnd 3.x games) is actually a pretty complicated system relatively speaking so if your fine with that you should be okay in general. Essentially though dont worry about anything until you've picked a game system with a genre and play style your interested in. There plenty of fantasy, cyberpunk, noir, horror and general sci fi games out there that you can kinda find anything.

Essentially roleplaying games are so vastly different that you figure out the world first, how your character fits into that and then go find whatever rules and classes that fit into it. Making a character for a role playing game before picking the game is essentially saying "I want to be a space ship" when your playing persona 4. Even if its the same genre it doesn't necessarily mean they fit together properly.

If your looking for easy character creation systems, games that are class based tend to be easier like Dark Heresy (warhammer 40,000 rpg) or Pathfinder if your not really worried about building a mechanically good character. Simple narrative based character creation systems are really good too if your comfortable with being creative with games like 13th Age, Dungeon World or FATE.

It all really depends on what your after. Also dont worry about being a rookie, assuming the people are not idiots or the game isnt overflowing with people groups are always on the lookout for new people.

@Sweep: While I dont want to say it as a fact but usually wormhole corps (atleast the decent ones) are looking for players with atleas 6 million + skill points, it ensures you know what your doing and have atleast 1 role you can fulfill competently. Not saying you wont find one but it might be tough

@tds418: You would actually be surprised how useful new players can be. Sure there are a lot of roles you cant fill in but there are some that take less than a day to be able to perform. In PvP you can fill the role of the tackler (essentially you stop your opponent from being able to run away in the fight which lets your teammates fit their ship for more damage). If you want to get into mining you can get an industrial ship and help haul for someone who has trained into mining far longer than you have. This allows the miner to never need to leave an asteroid belt as you can keep moving the ore around for them. Best case scenario is to try and have a look for what you might be interested in. Most have a role you can slip into to help out other players.
