Try out the first series of .hack games. The four games (INFECTION, MUTATION, OUTBREAK, QUARANTINE) are basically one really big game separated into four parts. The world is huge, the story is deep and riveting, and it scratches an itch that not a lot of other games try for.
I know nothing about Halo or Call of Duty. Does that make me less of a gamer because of it? Different people play different games. Pokemon might not appeal to someone not into RPG's. I know people who have never played Monkey Island or Final Fantasy. A true gamer is one that knows what kinds of games he likes and has some gaming knowledge about those genres. However, if you feel you want to have a go at it, try Pokemon out. If you like it, you'll see why people like it but if you don't like it, that's fine too. As long as you know what you like and don't like, don't let anybody else tell you wrong.
