Best of 2011 (so far)

Well, it's November 16th and with the exception of one more week and a handful of releases in December, it's time to start a list of the best games released in 2011 (so far)... okay I'm impatient and I like to make lists. Any other great titles released between now and the end of the year will be added to this list as well. LET'S GET TO IT.

List items

  • How do you make a sequel to one of surprise hits of 2007? Easy! Just cram awesome co-op with robots, hilarious dialog, and a batshit crazy final sequence. Sequels are great, but there's always the chance that the sequel doesn't match up or meet the quality standards set by its predecessor *coughdevilmaycry2cough*. Thankfully, that wasn't the case here!

  • Released way back in the ancient olden times of January 2011, Ghost Trick is a FANTASTIC game from Shu Takumi (the creator of the Ace Attorney series). Mystery, suspense, and plenty of laughs kept me playing this game until it was finished. Just like the Ace Attorney series, all of the characters are very likable and animated. Majority of the puzzles can be a bit tricky, but with the ability to rewind time, you're given plenty of chances to solve the puzzle as well as mess around with the other items in the game. With the exception of one part of the game (grrr... stealth sequences in the dark), the entire game is a joy to play through.

  • After a very disappointing sequel and years of talks about releasing another Deus Ex, FINALLY we get a proper sequel from Eidos Montreal. The dev team for Human Revolution understood what made the original Deus Ex great: customizable weapons with upgrades, open-ended gameplay, a mysterious story with conspiracies left and right, and multiple choices with consequences. While not everything about the game is great (boss battles and loading times), it's still a fantastic experience.

  • When Grand Theft Auto IV came out, it was a fantastic game, but there were a lot of people that asked, "Hey, where's the wacky stuff? Why can't I jump out of planes and parachute onto the ground, jack a go-kart, and perform a drive by with my rocket launcher?". Enter Saints Row: The Third. When the original Saints Row was released, it was a competent clone of the Grand Theft Auto series, but not much really separated it from the GTA series. Now with GTA going to more serious route, Saints Row decided to embrace the wacky. Without spoiling much of the story, every mission tries to one up the last by stepping up the wacky and absurd. The first mission unlocks a UAV that fires missiles. THE FIRST MISSION. Fantastic soundtrack, very well done voiceovers, solid gameplay, and tons of the activities to do make this a very solid package overall.

  • Want to play a game that's even more absurd than Saints Row: The Third (if that's possible)? Shadows of the Damned (A Suda51 TRIP!) will fit the bill. An original IP is uncommon these days and Japanese developed titles are slowly disappearing with the recent decrease of gamers in Japan. Developing a game for a next generation system costs a lot of money as well, so getting funding is very difficult. An original IP developed in Japan for next gen systems with great gameplay? That's extremely rare. Released back in June this year, Shadows of the Damned follows the tale of Garcia Hotspur (or Garcia "FUCKING" Hotspur) as he rescues his girl from the evil clutches of Demon Lord Fleming. While the story isn't very original, the in-game jokes, atmosphere, and dialogue are very well done. The gameplay is very solid, taking cues from Shinji Mikami's previous work (mainly Resident Evil 4). Unfortunately, there was very little marketing from EA. This led to a significant lack of sales at retailers. Unfortunately, it seems very unlikely that we will ever see a sequel to this game.
