Games that I would have never expected to be released in the US

These are games that for whatever reason, gave me the impression that we would never see them localized and released in the US.

List items

  • Now, I love this game. But in all honestly, the horrible graphics for a next-gen title and budget feel of the game, I would have never expected any publisher to pick up this game and take the risk on localizing it for the West. Good on Mangod and Ignition for taking the jump.

  • When I first read about this game, I had no idea who any of the characters on the Tatsunoku side were from. Still, it was a NEW VS games! How could you not get excited (even if I didn't know what half of the roster was from). I believe that even at one point, Capcom had mentioned that this game was very Japanese and wouldn't do well for a localization release. It almost got to the point where I was looking into importing options for the Wii. Thankfully, the planets had aligned and the game was released for the US as well.

  • JRPGs are very niche these days, but just the concept alone (women who are anthropomorphic representations of consoles) was enough to question the Western release of this title.

  • This applies for Yakuza 3 and 4 as well. After the low sales of the original Yakuza and no mention of the localization of its sequels, I was expecting this series to one of those that the US would never see again. I'm really glad that I was wrong and I'm glad that Sega is taking the effort to release these titles for their Western audiences as well.
