Wow, what a ridiculously well made and underrated game.

I don't know how this game didn't get more attention

Posted by ReyGitano

I think it got the respect it deserves, but then again... I spend a lot of time at Giant Bomb.
I also just beat the game a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it. It's too bad that I don't think Raven will get a chance to do anything original anytime soon after Singularity.

Posted by GeneralZod37

Got it, played for two hours until i got stuck cuz I did not have enough ammo. The two hours I played were decent though.

Posted by PerryVandell

I've been meaning to give Singularity a shot as I've heard it's a pretty solid shooter, but I have too many un-played games and I don't need to add to that already lengthy list.

Posted by mylifeforAiur

I thought the game was extremely generic and boring.

Posted by valrog

Yeah, it's a great game and really unappreciated. The story, while it may contain some loopholes, is pretty enjoyable and the atmosphere is great. I wish they would make a second one.

Posted by shivermetimbers

With the exception of the Phase Tick part, this game is great.

Posted by TheFreeMan

Yeah, except for the Phase Tick stuff, I loved Singularity. The story was a fun kind of dumb and wacky and the Time power stuff added some nice variety into the game. I even dug the multiplayer. I really enjoy Raven's shooters-I loved me some Wolfenstein.

Very good game.

Posted by ztiworoh

It was cliched and ripped off a lot of better, more popular games (Bioshock, COD) but it did it well and the time-travel paradox stuff it sets up was a fun hook. A solid game all around, nothing groundbreaking but yeah, worth playing through.

I don't see how it ripped off CoD, having one similarity doesn't make it a rip off, nor is the CoD franchise at all remotely better at this point. Also if I had to compare which is better: Bioshock 2 or Singularity, Singularity wins.

I actually just beat Singularity on Sunday too. It's an awesome game, got it for cheap too.

Posted by Cirdain

I liked it quite a bit. Oh and you know the moveable bullet... I changed the sensetivity so it was really easy to kill people while hiding behind a corner.

Posted by valrog
@ztiworoh: How did it ripoff Call of Duty again? With having a gun and shooting? Naturally, Call of Duty invented all those things, and every other FPS is a ripoff of this Master Franchise. Wow, just... Wow.
Posted by GeekDown

I recently beat it too and I liked it more than I expected to. The phase tick part sucked, but otherwise it's a really good game. The only real problem I had with it was the lack of subtitles.

Posted by ztiworoh
@valrog: Dude chill - I'm just saying it borrows a lot of conventions in terms of control and features from COD, not that it's a rip off. Can't we all just get along?
Posted by Getz

It got glossed over because of the timing of its release, and the fact that it was a first person shooter in a sea of competition, with hardly any marketing power behind it. It's a hidden gem of the genre though, with lots of really cool shit going on in it. Not to bad on the multiplayer side either; better than Dead Space 2 if you ask me.

Posted by valrog
@ztiworoh:  I am perfectly chilled. It's just that everyone acts like Call of Duty invented First Person Shooters and now games that actually have a story or are somehow different are copying it. Which is not true at all. Hell, it didn't even have regenerating health. Yeah, it borrowed stuff from other games, mostly BioShock, and the "memories" were a lot better in Singularity than in BioShock, in which were pretty limited and didn't really have any significance. And I don't mind that it borrowed elements that are actually somewhat unique and rare. When Call of Duty brings something new to the table, and that isn't a cheap trick, I will hope that other games borrow the idea and perfect it.

Now, the only annoyance I had with Singularity (besides Phase Ticks , I hate insects so much) was...

This. Every game should have subtitles.
Posted by Vonocourt

Fun game, 'specially dug just how invincible you got near the end.

Posted by klinkcow

You know what, I forgot about the subtitles... I was trying to play this game quietly and i had to get up next to my tv.

Posted by Bennyishere

I played it a few months ago and enjoyed it, but I didn't feel like it was amazing or anything like that. I will always respect their decision to give the player a mini-gun with 4x ammo and slow-motion, though.

Posted by sins_of_mosin

Finished the game today and I thought it was better then CoD Black Ops and that Medal of Honor game.  I'm not much for horror/scary games but it wasn't over done.

And whats this phase tick thing people are talking about?  Sure the ticks were annoying but ya just use a bubble or whatever its called to keep them from you and ya just kill them at your pleasure.

Posted by Raciend

Beat the game five min ago, and I really liked it. Could do without the small instects, they were no fun! Had problem with the auto at times, so the lack of subtitles was shitty :P

totally effing agreed. loved all the different endings. too bad there won't be a 2

on another note i liked Blacksite Area 51 too. i thought it had a very well done story
Posted by dcgc

I beat the game last week, really fun to play and great story. I agree, it is an underrated game and finally Raven did another good FPS game (Wolfenstein was the last decent FPS game from them).

Posted by valrog
@dcgc: I thought they didn't make any games between Singularity and Wolfenstein...
Posted by believer258

I fucking hated the phase ticks. I actually found the best way to deal with them, and pretty much the only way to get past their introduction on hard mode, is to shoot one of those sphere-things that stops time toward the biggest group of them and then run past and try to get by them. It takes a few tries, but that really helps alleviate the pain of those parts.

Otherwise, the game is excellent. Granted, it isn't exactly groundbreaking stuff but it is well worth playing if you like shooters. I thought that, gameplay wise, it was far better than either Bioshock game could ever have hoped to be. My only real complaint against it was that it was easy, even on hard mode, except for those damned ticks.

Bottom line, this game should have been far more popular.

Posted by Jothel

Yeah i really liked this game, too.

Posted by JTB123

It's a shame it didn't get more recognition, it was very well made and above all it was just a really fun shooter to play.

Posted by valrog
@believer258: Oh, don't even remind me. Those creatures made me unable to sleep normally. But I agree, I like the flashbacks a lot more than I do in BioShock. The atmosphere is just great. I only wish it would have subtitles. Oh, and a sequel.
Posted by The_Hiro_Abides

It was somewhat unique game that was fun. My favorite part was...

When you shoot the villain at the end, and the doctor says "that doesn't change anything." So I shoot the doctor.

It's funny how everyone seems to have been playing this recently. Singularity has been on my pile of shame since January (that's when I got it in some sale for cheap) and I've recently been thinking about playing it next week or so :)

Posted by Winger

Singularity is an average game I can't forgive, it has no heart and just isn't nearly as good as what it is trying to imitate.

This made me check if I got Singularity on Steam. I do. Those steam sales, mannnnnn...

I saw the Zero Punctuation review of it, and my tiny little follower brain told me not to play it.

Posted by Cheesebob

My biggest problem I had with it was it took itself too seriously, with all the ghostly suicides and grimness.

Posted by HellBrendy

I finished it about a week ago, and it's surprisingly good. It has too much production thogugh, silly pretending russian letters in the normal text and lacks a lot of sharm. It has some great gameplay though and a nice revolver. A little bit too close to Bioshock at times too, but it's ok. I recommend it for everyone who want's an over the average but under superb shooter.

He is far, far too harsh on the game (and most games in general). I'd strongly suggest finding a copy and playing through it, it's a very good game.

I agree. Either way, I'm glad more people are getting around to playing this game.

I couldn't disagree more. The story has more heart in it than plenty of comparable games: BioShock 2(not 1), Dead Space 2.

I may go as far to say a more interesting environment to a point, as well.

Posted by Tennmuerti

Hmm now that I see this thread, might as well chime in my 2c.
It was a good game, well above avarage, but I would not go so far as to call it great.

It's biggest problem imo is the very nature of time travel, you just can't make a time travel story/dilema good unless you are actually know your shit and are 100% commited to it.
Which is why the whole time travel story bits in this game sucked just like 99.9% of all other time travel related fiction.

Posted by valrog
@Tennmuerti: What are you talking about? Apart from 4 or 5 major plotholes, time traveling worked.

They are MAJOR plotholes.
The game has the very very basic syndrome of the killing your parents dilema all over the place.
Especially the end of the game. (and the end of a game is kind of an important bit)

PS: I just like good science fiction and I've seen time travel done well, so it always rubs me the wrong way when I see people attempt time travel and have the same very basic issues that have been made since people wrote about time travel. Naturally the same standards on writing and story cannot aply to a game as they do to say books (movies were never good at it) but the problem with Singularity is that the whole game is based around time travel, so it's kind of a priority here.
Edited by valrog
@Tennmuerti: Well, I did acknowledge that... I tried to explain those plotholes with multiple timelines, but there are irregularities in story's very essence. But if you can look past this, it's not very bad.

I would really love to read what writers had in mind when writing this. Maybe we're missing something important here. Multiple timelines (for no apparent reason) seem to be the most fitting answer for now, but who knows.
Posted by Tennmuerti
@valrog:
They just got a bit too ambitious for their own good imo. Moderation is required with time travel otherwise you are just setting yourself up for failure.
And I did enjoy the game itself, even the seperate story bits too, as well as the setting, just didn't enjoy the overall narative.
Which is why it's still a good game in my eyes.

True.

I also recently finished this game, and was very happy with it overall. Reminded me more of Bioshock than anything else, and I actually dug the story too.

I do believe it was/is underrated though. Wasn't the best shooter I have played, but far from the worst. Would love to have Raven continue making original(ish)  games like this.
Posted by Tennmuerti

@valrog: In retrospect I admit that the game probably did the best job it could under the circumstances, when it comes to time travel.

@Tennmuerti: Like you said, they got ahead of themselves.
