I've been playing it a while and I would recommend it. Single player is indeed a ton of fun, voice acting and characters are well done and its fun to watch story stuff play out. The strategy stuff is pretty inoffensive but the RTS part is pretty simple. Its very quickly paced and if the enemy brings more units to start with you can be doomed to fail. Even with an even match the game is really just about pumping out as many units as possible, and if you happen to have low popularity with the native faction in one territory and there have been lots of battle on that territory there won't be any recruits left to fight with (recruits being the only resource).

First celebrity death I've ever cared about, much less blinked an eye at.

Earth Defense Force 2017. You just have to be in the correct frame of mind.

Look, this guy is with me, though I remain entirely baffled with the ending of Insect Armageddon:

Started playing a few days ago and totally hooked. The default graphics settings were giving my pc a run for its money but hacking down a few of the flashier effects got me right up to a steady 40 fps. No connection issues yet with it either, which is saying something as my internet connection is generally not so hot.

I think this game could do with a Dwarf Fortress-esque Legends mode to track crew members, their mastery of different skills, their eventual death, weapons and systems that came an went during the journey, and of course the path taken and events encountered. Might be a fun way to share stories, much the way it is in DF.

I had 55% evade, 3 bars of shield and survived for a long time against the boss's first stage, but I ran out of missiles and between the beam, ion, and lasers couldn't ever make a big enough dent in the shields to do any damage.

Prioritizing evade was great from the beginning, but not being able to scratch the boss it was only a matter of time until a lucky shot crippled my engines or bridge.

Look up Planetary Resources. If they're successful, China's hold on those resources may not be the ace in the hole it seems like it will be.

Taking a class on social psychology and was amused to find a screenshot from Alpha Protocol, of all games, in the "video game violence" section depicting the main character punching a terrorist in the stomach.

Strange part for me is that it shares a caption with security tape footage of the Columbine shooting in Colorado. The text itself also pins the blame for the shooting on DOOM, and specifically the attacker's hobby of modding it so he could gun down "an array of helpless victims who could not fight back" (Gilovich 2011). Considering DOOM is set in Hell and the enemies, as originally designed, are anything but helpless or human, I think the blame is misplaced.

But without broaching that topic any further, why Alpha Protocol? It just strikes me as a very obscure game to zero in on for video game violence considering the much grander impact of other violent games like Call of Duty.
