Derp i totally missed the part about shorter books. I guess I should make another recommendation, I agree with recommendations for Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy, a trilogy of 5 relatively short novels all of which are pretty good. 
If you are looking for someone with more impact, my recommendation of Charles Dickens still stands I also would add Frank Herbert who did the Dune series, which had a good impact on science fiction at least.

Niel Stephenson has a great sci-fi library of works, I highly recommend anathem or Cryptonomicron, I also enjoy Charles Dickens works.

I'm glad that they have come around to resolving this issue but I really wish that they would solve the digital game purchases being tied to the hardware, it really makes me hesitant to purchase anything off the store if I end up losing it all if my system ever stops working. I would really prefer to purchase games digitally but this issue is holding me back.

@xyzygy: I guess 13-2 started to dabble in the appearance changes with the costumes, I kind of liked what they were trying to do with it and as you said I hope they expand more on this idea. Also I guess the smart ass answer would be the MMO's would have gear alter appearance. If this action-RPG feel is a preview of what versus 13 is going to have it just makes me more anxious now for its release.

I'm pumped, this looks like it can be interesting, I loved the combat in the last two I hope this takes it a step further. Unlike most people I really loved 13 and not so much 13-2. I hope story wise it leans more to 13.
