I think the best feature of the anti-Wii trolls would have to be the excellent grammar, spelling, and general mature poise with which they construct their posts.

Hmm, a great update if you have a PSP and/or still play Fallout 3 and/or play RockBand/Guitar Hero.  That probably covers a lot of people, but me...meh.  I'll probably download the Brutal Legend Demo.

I wish they would release Xenogears as a Classic.  I'd be snatching that up in an instant :D

  • Well than thats your view, however what it means is someone who has played those games when the were being sold. And obviously wii is pulling in new gamers so that goes without saying.

Well I think this topic has run it's course, but I just wanted to say one last thing...I think your definition of retro gamer is substantially different from most people's.

  • graphics are meh. good art value is what makes a game stand out. but whatever. Online play does matter at this point. It has become a standard like HD. Yes single player games will always be the best experience, but MP is important too.
  • Im not trying to brag at all, aside from a couple stars (like that purple coin one with luigi where the platforms disappeared when you touched them, took me like 6 tries) it was a breeze.
  • If you are a retro gamer, shouldn't you have already played those VC games? I said go to a friends house to play those must-play exclusives.

I hope this doesnt sound wierd, but what is your career (I am in college so....)
"
I think of online as a positive, but not necessary.  Most people still don't have reliable broadband, anyway.  But I will concede that Wii certainly has poor online play for the most part.

I found some of Galaxy to be genuinely tricky.  Not crushingly difficult, but tricky enough to where I wouldn't call it easy.  And like I said, I am no slouch at gaming.  Perhaps you are just really good at platformers :)

I don't view "retro gamer" as someone that used to play games.  I view "retro gamer" as someone that currently enjoys old games.  Of course I played most of those games, but so have nearly all ~30 year old gamers.  Not all said gamers can be considered retro gamers.

I am a research scientist.  Fun stuff :)

An actual civil discussion about this topic...I think I'll continue it, if I may!

First, I am going to have to disagree with you about graphics and online being a big deal, generally speaking.  A lot of gamers play mostly for single player and don't sink a lot of time into the online component.  I appreciate good graphics, but they aren't really what make a game fun (again, I'll use Infamous as an example...that game had some pretty shoddy graphics in a lot of spots but I LOVED it).  The tacked-on motion controls are a damn shame, I have to say.

Second, you must be a pretty awesome gamer if you think that Galaxy was easy all the way through.  You won't admit that some of those stars were tricky for you?  And anyway, Killzone and Halo were easy breezy for me, and I had a lot of trouble with some of the boss battles in NMH.  Again, this difficulty thing is really subjective and I am not sure it is important.

What's the point in getting a Wii if you already have the other consoles?  For me, the VC alone sells it.  I am a retro gamer to the core.  But ya: Galaxy, Smash Bros, Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, World of Goo, etc...i.e. Wii exclusives.  Those are the reasons.  I think the best answer to the OP is that if one wants to play those games and doesn't have a friend with a Wii, yeah they should buy a Wii.  If one would rather spend that money on more PS3 and 360 games, then that is what one should do.  Though I should point out that if you own both a 360 and a PS3, you are probably either 1) a big enough of a gamer where owning a Wii is a no-brainer anyway, or 2) money is no object.  In which case I would say, why *not* buy a Wii?

BTW, I usually don't type this much in posts but it doesn't bother me, as I spend a lot of time writing in my career (I write much better when it is important for work, so don't worry ;) )

" @Kr3lian: I completely agree with your last statement.  However, because the Wii has a lot of setbacks (No HD, No Hard drive, ectc) it misses out on games like Arkham asylum and such.  Owning just a Wii means many things:  1. you will never get great online experiences 2. hardcore gamers will find games to be extremely easy. and the list goes on...  The T.O. saiid he already owned a ps360 so if he wasnt a big zelda/metroid/mario fan to begin with, he should just find ways to play the select few games that are worth playing. In other words, the 249.99$ (or 199.99 if there is a price drop) that he would spend on it could get him somewhere better; like start saving up for a gaming PC or buy a couple AA games that he might want.  I have 25 games on my wii, (and yes i own all of the AAA, and the better of the AA) but the motion controls (excluding WSR) are gimmicks; they all feel like buttons. I cannot help but compare the Wii to other Nintendo systems, and looking at it that way, it not only falls to the bottom of the bucket this gen with its metascore/whatever sight you want to go by (which i know is NOT always 100% accurate, but I always re-do it myself and subtract the Game Informer score) its overall system score is at the bottom. "

A few things:

1) If someone owns just a Wii and is happy with that, why attack or make fun of them? (Not saying you did this, but it is common).

2) I own a Wii and PS3 and play a lot of both.  Other than the difference in graphics, online play, and too often tacked-on motion controls, I can't say one system is more fun than the other, other than the fact that the PS3 has an achievement system that is fun to mess with.  Mario Galaxy is amazing.  Smash Brothers is very fun (though a matter of taste, to be sure).  Many of the Wiiware games are great.  I love the Virtual Console, and I make enough money to not complain that the games aren't as free as emulated versions (and I like playing on my big TV anyway).

3) I disagree that Wii games are any easier than PS3 games (haven't played at 360 exclusives except for Halo, which I find boring).  Pound for pound, the Wii has much HARDER games, if only because of the Virtual Console.

4) I don't think the difficulty of a game necessarily makes it fun or not.  Infamous was very easy, even on Hard, but that is my GOTY so far.  I loved Prince of Persia.  I also loved Dead Space, which was definitely challenging (especially on the harder difficulty settings).  Fun games are fun games.  Besides, do you really find getting all 240 stars in Mario Galaxy to be "easy"?  Was No More Heroes easier than Halo 3 or Killzone 2?  Really?

I think it is time to get over the console wars and call a spade a spade.  The setbacks of the Wii are what they are (graphics, weak online, etc.), but those things aren't necessary to have fun.  It is up to the developer and the taste of the gamer.  Anything else...well...see my previous post.

" @Garfield360UK: no.  If you are hardcore, you will eventually let it collect dust against other next gen systems.  If you want something you will breeze through for every "hardcore" title on wii, then get it.  Otherwise get better system. "

If you define hardcore as "not playing the Wii", then you are correct.  Otherwise, you're wrong.

Every single person I know that owns a Wii and PS3/360 plays the Wii with some regularity.

People that hate the Wii generally 1) don't own one and do the typical immature teenage angst thing (I don't have it so it sucks!) or 2) are extremely insecure and feel the need to define themselves by some irrelevant terminology (I am not play teh Wii cuz it not teh HARDCORE!).

Come to think of it, when someone says "WII IS FOR TEH BABIES", I imagine that person is some microdicked redneck driving by in a Ranger Sport.

Man, I have to agree.  The PS3 was fucking hard to set up.  I mean first, there were some cables to plug in.  Then, I had to press a button.  Then, I had to "type" text into a box using the confusing plastic thing that had two sticks on it.  Now how in the hell is your average consumer supposed to use one of these there stick devices?

Ugh.

And to the, "well it's a free market! Whargarble!" people:  it is not a free market.  It is illegal to sell magic dick-growing pills ( that contain lead, no less).  It is illegal to charge people huge sums of money for "psychic" readings, even if you tell them what's in store in the fine print.  There are great many "business practices" that are illegal.  I don't think it should be illegal to charge a shit-ton of money to plug in a video game console, but if you think there is anything okay with it, you have no moral backbone.

I'll be more clear.  It is morally wrong to charge $100+ to plug in a PS3, and if you don't think so, you are an probably an asshole.
