@Sjupp: last year they did a best Song of the year. I imagine they will do the same. I also imagine something from Bastion will be winning this years category for best song.

Given the nature of Giant Bomb's coverage of Bastion, I imagine that the game will be excluded from a lot of the GOTY discussions.

You really think so? That would be a shame because that game is truly GOTY material.

Giant Bomb covered and promoted the game so much during development that they refused to review it. I feel that any attempt to award it with GOTY considerations would just play into the conflict of interest that they worked to avoid.

@Hailinel: I think they covered that in a bombcast or on a happy hour (or something?) - as far as I remember, the argument is that as GOTY discussions are not reviews, and not really purchasing advice (as) directly, there's no reason to exclude Bastion, assuming someone likes the game enough to nominate it.

[edit: here's the source: http://www.giantbomb.com/podcast/?podcast_id=242 at the 2 minute mark.]

But that's off-topic.

Anyway, on-topic: I really like the vocalized Bastion tracks ("Build that Wall", "Mother, I'm here", "Setting Sail, Coming Home" in particular), and the Deus Ex: Human Revolution soundtrack is really good as well... made me think of Mirror's Edge at times, and that's only a good thing :)

Alice had some good tracks too, but nothing that stood out as strongly.

They gave Bastion its own miniseries called "Building the Bastion." It wasn't just one preview video. They brought SuperGiantGames into the Whiskey offices and let them show the game off for a half hour at a time. Jeff, Ryan, Brad, and Vinny are also former coworkers of and are friends with Greg Kasavin, is a part of the development team. In general, it would feel like a huge conflict of interest for them to award the game with anything GOTY related.

But enough of that. Here is more Catherine music:

Also, Yakuza 4. Fuck yeah:

This thread is fantastic. I wish I had something to add to it, alas, I haven't been playing all that many new games this year.

Threads like this remind me how important a soundtrack can be in influencing my immersion in the universe of the game.

"Setting Sail, Coming Home" from Bastion is by far my favorite this year. It's one of those songs I can put on repeat and listen to eight or nine times in a row.  This is going on my list of songs I must learn to play when I don't suck at guitar.

A close second is Reptile's Theme. I strongly dislike that kind of music for the most part, but DAMN.

Protal 2 and Bastion for me so far. Looking forward to see what Skyrim brings to the musical table.

Oh! The gamescom trailer for Might & Magic Heroes VI is flipping AWESOME:

Deus Ex: HR. I love the mix of Tron and Mass Effect. It just sums up the world they have created. I'll also like to say that Dead Island trailer music is phenomenal.

1. Shadow of the Colossus had the greatest game soundtrack ever written.

2. Shadow of the Colossus is being re-released this year.

3. Therefore, Shadow of the Colossus has the best soundtrack of 2011.

4. Quod erat demonstrandum.

So far, Zia's Theme from Bastion is my favorite. Skrillex's Reptile Theme is pretty good, but I'm just not a huge fan of dubstep.

L.A. Noire had a great soundtrack

Also the Ocarina of Time was re-released on the 3ds this year so I'll throw it in here.

Awesome thread!  Not a whole lot for me to add.

I haven't played many new games this year but I've been pretty impressed with the music in all of them.  Witcher 2 opening title screen music really grabbed me (already posted).

The L.A. Noire stuff sounds really good.  I was also surprised by the Shadow of the Damned tracks.  They're good!

Anyway, Armored Princess didn't come out this year, but Crossworlds did and it has the same title music ... so that counts right?

If this was the 2010 thread I could put down some cool songs. Alas, the only thing I can offer aside from LA Noire tracks which were already posted is this:

I normally don't like metal music, but the Hard Corps: Uprising OST is hell-fucking-balls-to-the-wall awesome.

Deus Ex definitely deserves a lot of praise, the game is fantastic and the music fits the mood and setting perfectly. I also give them credit for not just reusing the music from the original games (although hearing civilians whistle it was very nostalgic).

And because nobody else has mentioned it:

I am the opposite of a music person, so for me to even recognize the soundtracks of Shadows of the Damned and Portal 2 should tell you that they're better than anything else released this year.

im not normally a fan of game music out of context, but Bastions soundtrack kicks ass, i vote for "Build That Wall". i actually had a tear in my eye when that song kicks in in the game, i dont know if it was the power of the song or the way they introduced it, probably a combination of the 2, really affecting though
