I'm all about this Morrowind love. Borrowing a phrase from Dan Ryckert, it's probably my favorite game of all time. That video was a well-articulated version of what I've been struggling to say for a long time.
Fun fact! See the guy in the white shirt up front?
The guy in the white t-shirt is a gameplay designer on this game. He's wearing a shirt from an "Polish anti-communist" fascist party in Poland. Not fucking surprising to see shit like that working on this.
So this game is made by actual, real-life fascists?
Well.
So....the close-ups of women and minorities getting shot and stabbed have a context now.
But perhaps it's not as pointed an accusation as you suggest it to be. For example, I don't think Gies thinks Kamiya is a sexual predator or an active woman-hater or anything crazy like that. People can do or create something harmful without realizing it. Not that I personally believe Bayonetta is particularly harmful--I'm just making the case for social criticism to be included under that umbrella of "opinion."
A review comes from the reviewer. If something in the game bothers the reviewer, then he or she should speak out about it. It's as simple as that in my eyes.
Neither I nor anyone else has to agree or disagree with the reviewer's assessment. The reviewer just has to be as honest as possible.
