Portable fighters are such a rarity.

Its something I see so rarely I forget they are some. I know the reasoning for them not being popular. (Mainly because everyone needs the handheld it self and they aren't exactly made for tournaments) but, other than that why are they rarely made?

Controls? I guess that could be one but if the dev actually made it for the system and was not a port from a console they could get the controls right.

Would you personally like to see more handheld fighting games? I know I would if the controls were better of course.

I imagine the controls have a lot to do with it. You really have to simplify the control scheme on a handheld to get it to work, just because you have fewer buttons to work with. remember playing a lot of MK2 on my Game Boy years ago, but it wasn't the greatest because I only had two buttons to work with. Can you get a fighter on a handheld? Sure you can. But you generally have to make sacrifices to the controls to get it on there.

I think it's cause fighting games are really kind of designed to be played by two people on the couch or in the arcade or whatever. I know at least for me that fighting games aren't as interesting just by myself or even online.

I can see that. Its the same for me I would play more fighters in person with 2 people more than anything I just wish we could get a really good portable fighter for once.

Yeah, I guess that is the biggest problem. I remember Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the GBC being kinda being weird as well since you only had 2 buttons.

I am one of the few people who enjoys fighters for versuing computers as much as other people. I have put about 2 to 3 hours in the mortal kombat demo just trying the 4 different characters and learning their moves.

So although I would like a portable fighter, preferably mortal kombat, I can understand why it would be difficult to make a good fighter on a handheld. Most good fighters are good because they offer fluid controls and a deep combat system, and that is hard to transfer to a handheld.

I don't think that they are that rare, There has been fighting games on nearly every hand held. Even the 3DS already has 2, and it doesn't even have a mario game yet.
