Why Bioware why? Dragon Age 2 minor *SPOILERS*

Hey peeps,
I just finished Dragon Age 2, around 30 minutes ago so the experience is very fresh. Already I have complaints against it.

First of all, the game is great so even though I might sound harsh in some aspects of it, don't blame the entire game, it was a fun experience. I finished the game in 2 sittings with a completion time of 17 hours. The addictive characteristics associated to Bioware games is still very present.

Now on to my main complaint. I have been waiting for this game ever since DA:O. I have played Awakening and couldn't wait to jump back in. What I found was different mechanics and looks which I accepted and enjoyed. However, the ending and leading up to the end was way too sudden. It almost seems like they ran out of time to finish the game properly so slammed a few shortcuts in the story and closed it. I have got the achievement for finishing it twice (finish it once if you have a Dragon Age Origins save file) so I have no intention at all to come back to it. I feel kinda robbed to be honest, While 17 hours is a good time for a game, I have finished it in less than 2 days! I have finished Mass Effect 2 quite a few times and enjoyed doing so in order to see how the story would end up due to different actions but the results of the actions in this game are so evident that I have no incentive at all to try differently. i usually play my choice-driven games twice, first playing as a good guy and then as a badass but now I know straight away how the game would end if I played it badass, too predictable.

*SPOILERS*
The end was also the most disappointing ending to come from a Bioware game. I have played all of Bioware's choice-driven games and this one is the only one that got me staring at the credits wondering if there was any way to make the game continue. The ending is so abrupt that I can't really tell if it's supposed to be a cliff-hanger. Seriously, you just leave and are never seen again? A threat is rising and you're needed but they can't find you...CREDITS! Meh.
 *SPOILERS*

Anyways the game seemed more like a rental to me, my 60 euros could have been spent elsewhere. Hoping that the next Dragon Age closes up some questions or that DLC comes out really quickly explaining a few things about the ending.
In a way this blog post can be seen as a review so even though the ending was miserable, the overall content and quality of the game gives it (in my opinion) an 8 out of 10.

So for all the avid Bioware fans out there, any comments on the ending? Am I missing something?

With the increased amount of games they're developing at once it's not out of the ordinary for the quality to drop.

Didn't do much of the sidequests no. Did what I felt like doing tbh, maybe I should actually revisit those.

If you live in the Netherlands and have a Bart Smit nearby, they've been selling it since Saturday :)

I've completed the game yesterday and also did finish it in two sittings, then again I am an addicted gamers and the game ran a little bit over 20 hours if I count it right. I did all of the sidequests except two of them in the last act because I couldn't be bothered anymore and I do feel the same way about the ending... the question now is if it's going to lead to DLC or a straight sequel...

Wait... 17 hours? 20 hours?

What the fuck?

I put 55 hours in to my first play-through of DA:O, and I wasn't really dicking around at all.

I agree, but I am not only disappointed with the ending. The game seems unpolished in many aspects. After seeing Dragon Age II, I am sure that there will never be a game of the Origins quality in this franchise. It's like a curse, if your first game is a huge success, you are pressed to create a sequel as soon as possible. And this time pressure ruins the sequels.

Somewhere, buried deep in the minds of the development team, there is a much better ending to this game... or at least a version of this storyline, that is more coherent and persuading than its current form.

I'm 17 hours in and I am no where near the end.

It's called DLC.

Or if we're lucky, an expansion.

Neither can it correct flawed game design decisions and lack of attention to details.

Dude I'm at 17 hours and I just barely finished Deep Roads Expedition, you must not have done any of the side stuff. I found myself going holy shit this is too long. Also a lot of that side stuff carries forward into more stuff in the next years, I just went into the fade as a follow up to a side-quest I did in the first year. You gotta do side stuff in games like these man.

Try to either load or save your game, your previous autosave will be present with the time played attached to it.

I completed it a few hours ago. Time: 20:48:23. I did every single side and companion quest I could find. It was alright. I really enjoyed some of the companion quests. Overall a good game, but Origins was much better in my opinion. Also, the ending was terrible. No closure of any kind.
The combat mechanics were cool. I really enjoyed my rogue, and towards the end he could one shot most normal enemies. It was a bit too easy on Normal, although a few of the bigger enemies were really tough (the really big one in the Bone Pit was a pain).

I'm at 26 hours, and I just barely started Act 2. This doesn't make sense. What difficulty? I'm playing on normal.

Thank you sir. Yeah I skipped a few side quests and ended with 17 so I'm guessing if I would have spent the time to finish everything else it would have taken me another 3. As I said in the blog, the ending disappointed me too, it removed at least one point from my deliberation out of 10.

This is essentially my opinion.  A good game, but not great.  And certainly not better than the first game.

I like the changes they made to combat and the UI, the visuals have more style to them this time, and the cutscenes are very well done.  That's about it for positives, I'm afraid.

**SPOILERS BELOW**

The game is too short (didn't they claim this game had at least as much content as the first one?).  The combat can get repetitive, and having more and more guys just drop out of the sky into every fight, is extremely lame (and makes it hard to strategize fights).  The environments get staggeringly stale after a while - whether it's going through the same four sections of the city over and over again, or seeing the reused areas they made for quests literally dozens of times over the course of the game.

The motivations for the two major boss fights - the Arashok and Meredith - are really poorly laid out.  Both events basically come out of nowhere, and you actually spend time completing quests for both people at some point!  The last couple of hours of the game were so ridiculous it made my head spin.  It starts when Anders inexplicably blows up the Chantry... somehow... despite many occasions over the course of the game where he learns that perhaps Templars and mages CAN co-exist.  Then after he does that, Meredith says all mages must die, and walks away without doing anything to Anders?  What the fuck is that?

( should add I sided with the mages)

Then you prepare for the Templars with the First Enchanter, only to have the First Enchanter inexplicably say he's tired of being "helpful" and turn into a massive monster that you then spend the next 30 minutes fighting.  This was the guy you were allies with not five seconds earlier.

Then you fight Meredith - one of the easiest fights in the world.  She... somehow... turned the demonic idol from earlier into a sword, and goes batshit crazy with glowing eyes, despite showing no such symptoms or behaviour at any earlier point in the game.  The sword also apparently grants her superpowers, because she starts flying all over the place like an acrobat, and brings a bunch of bronze statues to life... somehow.

And then after that stupid fight ends - NOTHING HAPPENS!  The Seeker lets Varric go, there's a tiny fragment of intrigue for a future sequel, and then the credits roll.  Absolutely no closure at all.

I generally enjoyed most of the game, because I though it would continue on longer, and build to a satisfying conclusion, but at the end I was left with a sour taste in my mouth.  It felt like they just cut off the story in order to meet the release date, or something.

@Scotto:
Mm, the whole ending and story and cliffhanger thing reminded me so much of KotOR2. Especially, from what i gather, the fact that 2 specific important people are missing, and there's apparantly a threat coming? That and the fact that the end was just utter bs and totally messed up.

@Scotto: Exactly. The ending was too blank to be a cliffhanger in my opinion. I found the introduction to the game via flashforwards (point of the view of the dwarf). And then things just start unfolding. What could have been spread in 10 hours ended in a matter of minutes (boss fights at the endish). Anyways, I'm glad someone agrees with me, from the earlier comments it made it seem as though I might have missed something.

Kinda how I feel also, finished it this morning (sat until 6 in the morning to finish it). That was really meh and very "to be continued". But I gotta go through it one more time as rogue or mage, and also go through whatever DLC is available.

I'd like to mention that i agree to this post but i find that something that hasn't been mentioned yet is how you summon Flemeth and she clearly has something in mind but NOTHING is made of it.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention this as well.

The entire main story is just poor.  The dialogue and everything is still top notch, but the actual plot is just incoherent at times.  It feels like at one point things were supposed to be bigger and longer, but they cut a bunch of stuff out for time - explaining Flemeth's role in the story, fleshing out Meredith as an enemy (and her descent to madness), explaining Anders' actions at the end, and so on.

It might also explain why you run through identical cookie-cutter "caves" and warehouses and side streets over and over.

The incoherence of the plot doesn't become apparent until the end, because you naturally assume things will be resolved by the conclusion.  They aren't.

One thing that could have maybe turned this ending over to the good would be if we would get some side stories about what happened to the different people we've encountered through the game. Like the end of Origins tells uss what happens with the people you've worked with.
