GOTY 2013

First of all I would like to say this list is wrong. There are games that should be on the list but aren't. Short version, I broke my foot, got stuck inside with nothing tot do but play games and was pretty depressed for a couple of months. I'd like to say sorry to Saints Row 4, Papers Please, Brothers and The Swapper because although I know they are great games I was miserable when playing them and that's not their fault but I can't put them on this list. Hanyway here are my top 10 games of the year that I had 'fun' when playing.

List items

  • It's been a good year for being emotionally invested in characters in games. This sits proudly at the top of my list because no other game has ever got my emotions running as much as the last of us. Even months on I still care a great deal about Joel and Ellie and thier journey will stick with me for a long time. Also I really enjoyed the gameplay. It's difficult to make a stealth game where it's kind of okay when you fuck up but I think Naughty Dog got it spot on.

  • That ending man, holy shit. Need I say more?

okay well the combat was pretty fun but exploring columbia was just amazing and with a constant sense of 'what the hell is going on here?' it was one of the best reveals in the end of any game I've ever played. They started the show with a showstopper and it just narrowly missed out as my game of the year.

  • Gone Home is a beautiful creepy game. I was constantly tense walking around an empty house just as I would in real life. It had a story to tell and did it in a wonderful beautifully realised way even though people might not call it a real game but fuck them. This ride was well worth the price of admission.

  • This is just stupid dumb fun, the writing is incredibly funny, the gameplay is simple and the puzzles were open ended enough to let you experiment. It's one of the few games this year that I finished in one sitting.

  • Who knew that this game was going to be any good. I didn't have high hopes but it was like a slightly more open uncharted, with a good story, fun gameplay and some amazing set pieces I came away seriously impressed.

  • I still don't hav a clue how I solved half of the puzzles in antichamber. It was a joy yto watch others play it and watch thier brains melt. It is a completely unique experience and one of those games that I thought about all day at work trying to figure out how to get past the wall I was stuck up against which in some cases was just to walk right through it. I doubt any game will ever fuck with my head as much as this did.

  • As someone that thought Far Cry 3 was just a little too big and a little too long this was the prefect bitesize chunk which had all the best bits of the gameplay, some even better weapons and some dumbass bullshit 80s story that kept me grinning all the way through.

  • I was nervous about this game. Conviction was my game of the year when it came out and after about half an hour I couldn't believe that they had changed the controls. After a while though I got used to them (and the lack of michael ironside) and started to apreciate the choices that this game offers by way of how stealthy or leathal you want to be. Oh and it may not have been the hunt for his not dead daughter and saving the president but the story was pretty good. It's been a good year for storie in games I feel.

  • Okay so I really like Remember Me, shoot me if you like. I know the contols weren't as tight as they should have been and that but it was different and interesting. Customising combos and changing them for different situations was awesome plus it all looked quite pretty didn't it? The bits where you were remixing memories were also really impressive and I enjoyed that they let things play out all the way to the end before telling you that you'd messed up what you needed to do.

  • As someone who still plays worms and chefs love shack on a fairly regular basis with my brothers I love that people are still putting out dedicated local multiplayer games. I imagine I will spend a large amount of my christmas break playing this with them. It's no windjammers but for a game that came out so recently I still feel it belong on this list more than games I've put a lot more time into.
