GOTY 2014

In a shocking turn of events my number one game of 2014 came out in 2013.I've long been a believer in a game of the year list should consist of games released in that year, this year however I throw caution to the wind for three reasons.

Reason one: on the whole it's been a pretty lousy year. Distilling my top games into a list of 10 has been considerably easier this year they had in previous.

Reason two: the game in my number one spot is infuckingcredible and it needs to be given its due.

Reason Three: Guests have enevr held themselves to this rule and now some staff members have added games from other years (e.g. Brad) so I feel okay freeing myself from this man made prison.

First of all a few honourable mentions if I may.

Oddworld New and Tasty edition. I think this is a fantastic HD rerelease putting in the Smart new save system however it just missed out on spot number 10.

Halo: the Master Chief collection. When it's working it's beautiful I love halo and have done for years and it is extremely nice to be able to play all four main games on one console. also the halo five beta is rocking however due to technical limitations I don't feel comfortable having all my top 10 list.

The Last Of Us Remastered. this is an even prettier version of last year's game however having only topped my list last year I feel is too soon to have essentially the same game on this list again. This is also the year I got around to playing the jack and Daxter HD trilogy. If you havent played that do immediately. Its an amazing package with incredible value. It's also the first time I got around to completing Jak 2 (I'm a little more patient than I was when I was a kid) and thats probably my gaming highlight of the year.

Thanks to picking up a vita this is also the year I started playing spelunky. I thought I cracked it the first time I made it through a dark level without losing a heart only to discover what a bitch the jungle is.

Games I didn't play/play enough of for me to know if they belonged on here:

Far cry 4, Neverending Nightmares, Sunset overdrive, Broken age part 1, The fall and Kentucky Route Zero. I look forward to giving thiese all honarable mentions next year.

Now on to the list.

List items

  • This game didn't come out in 2014 but if brad can pick dota 2 two years in a row I can do whatever the hell I want. I only got around to playing this game in january but that is what I spent all of the month playing. To deny this my top spot would be criminal even though some would say it doesnt qualify. Boo to them I say. The new twists on the old classic zelda formula made this the perfect game. No complaints whatsoever. I want to play it again just writing this now. Few games have impressed me as much as this and I bet few more games will.

  • The best local co op game I've had the pleasure of playing since samurai gunn. I've been playing it every chance I've had since it came out. The hard swings some games take are a real crowd pleaser. Some of the reactions we've had rival those at football games.

  • I struggle to put into ords why I liked this game so much. The combat is versatile and feels way better than it has an right to for a lrod of the rings game. The main reason I know I love it is aside from the gathering plants I finished everything in the game and it's not often I'll take the time to do that. My only complaints are there were no rewards for completeing all the weapon challenges and the ending was a total anti climax.

  • Who saw this coming eh. I thought the stealth options were incredibly well implemented and when it all went to pieces you had a fantastic shooter to fall back on. Thats not to mention the humanising of one of the oldest blank slates in video game history that made for an incredible story.

  • JAZZPUNK god damn. This game transcends description. I love you forever Jazzpunk. How delightfully weird and wonderful you are.

  • 'The decent in which there is nobody left to forgive us'

The beauty of the minimal amount of writing monument valley is only outdone by the games visuals. Crisp and clean with simple puzzles that kept me playing for hours.

  • Infamous brings the old series to the new hardware with a bang (followed by a poof of smoke) with the always tight controls and new visuals that really shone through with the neon powers it looked and felt amazing. Even the story sucked me in in a way I wasnt expecting.

  • Aesthetically pleasing, mentally stimulating. Easy to play for long or short bursts Threes is the perfect mobile game.

  • The style of this game is only beaten by Jazzpunk's. I said it when I picked up my vita and I'll say it again 'if this thing only played luftrausers I'd be pretty okay with that'

  • Watch dogs gets a lot of stick for what it isn't. I like it just fine for what it is. A cool open world game with the ability to raise bridges and drive over them whilst elevated to look totally badass. I had a lot of fun with watch_dogs even though I would have liked a few more qr code heads to pop up.
