My power level, amidst other things

So that's out of the way. Now, as the title suggests, we have other business to attend to. This will probably go on for a bit, so I suggest either skimming it, or just reading sections that interest you. AND COMMENT.
Editing
Obviously, as I'm over 9,000 points now, I really like editing pages on Giant Bomb. I couldn't really explain why this is, I just really enjoy spreading the knowledge I have of these games and characters. It's really compelling honestly, and I think if there are even a handful of other people like me out there, we can really build Giant Bomb into an amazing repository of video game information. I've really enjoyed reading pages on games I've never heard of, and writing pages for some awesome games. It's a great community experience, and I can safely say, after almost two months on this site, Giant Bomb hit it out of the park on this one. Other elements of this site have not been meshing with me so well, as you'll (hopefully) read below.Forum Moderation
Now most of you likely to be reading this blog and looking at my profile probably know me and the mods have been having a bit of an ongoing skirmish for the past while now. I've talked with them at length on the issue (Those of them who aren't too condescending to even deign to have a fair discourse [OH LOOK! It's been deleted. How convenient]), but I still feel there's more to say on the matter. There's been a bit of a crackdown on topics and the types of topics allowed in the forums recently. As some of you may have noticed, this has severely dampened activity. Me and a few others have gone after this, but we're always dismissed as a trouble-making, "Vocal minority", as they like to put it. Putting aside the fact that our vocal minority is undoubtedly larger than their whole mod team, after putting some thought into it, it comes down to this. The sorts of shenanigans that the GB staff pull off, and indeed, the sort of vibe I think the were going for with the site, is not allowed on the forums. Whereas Jeff, Ryan, Brad, and Vinny take to the whole videogames thing with their tongue planted firmly in cheek, hoping to have some fun, the forums are focused primarily on: "SERIOUS DISCUSSION", with very little room for the sorts of fun-time shenanigans that I think was the whole appeal of Giant Bomb to me in the first place. It's a jarring juxtaposition, and one I'm not sure was entirely intended.
I could go on, but I doubt you wish to hear me wax on for paragraphs about forum moderation, fascinating though it is.
Rolling with mah homies
However, despite the state of the forums, I've still managed to find a nice little niche in his community full of awesome, like minded guys (and gals) who seem to share interests and ideas (ironically pretty much exclusively using exterior services as opposed to GiantBomb itself). Both Bomb Squad (By invitation only at this point), and the GB IRC are full of tons of awesome guys, and if you happen to be reading this blog and not really frequent either of those, I recommend you check em out. Just some shout-outs to cool dudes (I can't fit everyone on here, but I love you all ;))- jensonb: Hangs out in the IRC, sweet guy and one of the first people I really met on GB
- Pyromaniac: Can be found around the place, has REMARKABLY similar tastes to me, and is my points rival (Although now I guess I'm like 1,000 ahead of him! CATCH UP PYRO!)
- Jayge: BS dude, he's in the IRC nowadays and on the forums, cool guy.
- Pepsiman: Cool wiki mod I kinda met early on in GB's life, nice to chat with
I think that's a great example of the community power of Giant Bomb, and it's one of the reasons I spend so much time on this site. It's done a great job at building a community around itself in a very short amount of time.
Force Unleashed
I've been on about this a bit in various forums, but I couldn't really resist a chance to post about it here. First off: FUCK YOU WHOEVER PUT ENDING SPOILERS ON THE REBEL ALLIANCE PAGE!!! I did NOT appreciate that. Did not appreciate that at all. Anyways, seething rage aside, game looks good. No, no 9.0 AAA! good, but solid and something that will entertain me for quite some time. There's a poster over on the GameFAQs forums who got an early copy, and he's been filling us in with information. Apparently the game's criminally short: 10 levels, ten hours, including cutscenes on medium difficulty. However, I really enjoyed the demo and as long as the full game is more of that with stronger Force powers and different environments, I'm down with that. Any game that lets you pull a TIE Fighter out of the air with your mind is a winner in my book. The "lightbat" doesn't actually bother me that much honestly. Game seems to play well enough, and the main gimmick of wreaking havoc with the Force clicks with me on a primal level. Maybe it's not the best example of game design, but bashing in a door by flinging Stormtroopers at it sure is DAMN FUN. And really, that's all I wanted from this game anyways. A good story and some fun gameplay. Force Unleashed seams to be delivering both of those, so I'm not sure I understand the backlash to the title. Perhaps people let themselves get overhyped on the technology?
I know for one that Jayge has a burning hatred of Euphoria Physics, but I personally don't get it. Smacking a Stormtrooper into a box will make him stumble backwards over it on his knees, tossing one towards a railing will have him reach out for it, they'll generally react well to the environment. The AI may be incredibly dumb, but I think the physics works well. DMM is in a similar boat. It may have been overhyped, and it isn't on everything, but it sure as hell is spectacular when it works. Seriously, just messing with doors is tons of fun, to try and see how warped you can get them by using different force combinations and from different angles. I think TFU was all a matter of poorly managed expectations. Which brings me on to...
Mirror's Edge
Holy crap this game looks damn good. Damn good. After reading the most recent EGM coverstory, I'm even more excited for it (even though their "blowout" was remarkably light on content). I honestly could care less for the story, but it seems as though DICE has utterly nailed the feeling of movement and the proper way to tackle first-person perspective, and Full-Body Awareness. By integrating your limbs and allowing you to see them quite often, instead of ust when you look down, it seems as if DICE might have nailed this look finally. Previous first-person games always had a slight disconnect between the player and the action, but from what I've seen, it really looks like this could close the gap. Interestingly enough, the DICE guys were talking in the EGM story about how they actually had to fudge some of the animation regarding Faith's limbs, as that isn't quite how it would look in real life, because your eyes focus on odd things when you're running. The dudes spent a while talking about how previous first-person games mounted the camera on your chest, as opposed to your head. Your head generally stays focused on your objective, regardless of what your body is doing. Seems like these guys really have got a good thing going, and I can't wait until November 11th.In Other News
- The Large Hadron Collider fired it's first test shots, we did not all die
- Jeff Green has left 1UP to go work on Sims games. This is a great loss for the community, as he was as some liked to put it, an "elder statesman" for the games industry and gaming journalism, and I think he always had some interesting insights to share. He's still maintaining a blog called Greenspeak, but it will be corporately monitored no doubt. It'll be interesting to see what this means for GFW radio...
