Bayonetta - Any Buyers?

Linkyshinks Bayonetta Review

I'm currently in the process of chasing up my "Pure Platinum" medals, it's worth it just to hear Cereza tell mummy she's the best.

I cannot wait till next week!, I've waited ages for this Kamiya masterpiece. Who's with me, who's picking up this awesome game on launch night?, at what's being dubbed "the witching hour". Alternatively, who's taking a wait and see approach? If you are doing the latter, what exactly are you waiting for?.

Anyway, here's the new Bayonetta TV advert, It's short, but very sweet. I like the use of La Roux's- "In for the Kill"

Bayonetta TV Advert

You guys in the US get the game on Tuesday (5th), those of us in Europe have to wait till Friday (8th).We in Europe get awesome pre-order gifts in the form of replica weaponry and the Climax Edition.

Why Bayonetta?

I'm in love with everything about this game, even it's OTT style has managed to grow on me in a big way, but more so than what's seen on the surface, I love what this game has at it's very core - it's awesome combat system. It's the product of extreme labour on the part of  PlatinumGames (ex  Clover Studios). They spent an obsessive amount of time working on the games combat system alone, before anything else of consequence was even designed. (-that's how it should be done always imo)  It's extremely well devised and takes the genre to the next level, which was always the games design goal from the very start. What I like about the combat is the way it can force you to attack, block and evade in an almost rhythmic fashion. If you watch a noob play and it can seem like just another slasher, but watching an expert play can be wow worthy enough for you to drop your jaw in amazement.

As you may already be well aware, Bayonetta's gameplay is full to the brim with what looks likes utter chaos, but it's ordered chaos, put into order because the combat system is so solid. I don't think you can have such chaos in any such videogame unless all cylinders are firing as far as the combat system. It would be too bewildering to the player otherwise. Everything has been implemented with skill, even old part and parcel features like bullet time have been given new life with this game. Kamiya-san was unhappy with where Capcom had taken the DMC franchise in his absence, his baby (- he made the first game, only, I should add). the development of this game has essentially been an outlet for him to cast off the past and innovate to bring the action genre back to where he thinks it belongs.

The term hack and slash would be an offensive term to apply to this game given the games depth in combat, it's far from hack and slash, which suggests mind numbing combat that allows few options to the player. The combat here goes way beyond that of Ninja Gaiden and God of War's. If think the games distinct style may well put off a few people, but I personally love it because I know exactly what games have influenced it. The style has really grown on me, I now see that it aids the quirky camp comedy found in the game. It's very akin to the madness found in the great God Hand.

For me,  Bayonetta is one of only a few videogames that seems to embrace the fact it's a videogame, it's celebrates the fact unashamedly in almost hedonistic fashion with beautiful chaos and fantastic gameplay.

To any doubters, I suggest you keep an open mind.

I'm getting two Scarborough Fair replica guns with my copy, as seen below. My girlfriend Jenni really wants one ^^, but I've told her she can't. I  just can't do it..I need to have two for collection purposes, well that's my excuse anyway.  I am making it up to her though, I've asked some Chinese dude in London's Chinatown to make me a Bayonetta voodoo doll, using the image below. I'm picking that up on Friday also, I think it'll keep her quiet, I hope it does... Of course, I don't mind her using them as kinky props in future ^^

I played the demo when it first came out and had a lot of fun with it and knew I'd buy it eventually.  Eventually came this Wednesday.  I'm enjoying it a lot.  I love games like this.  It's not trying to be some super cinematic experience to outdo films and it's not try to pull at your emotions.  It knows it's a game and it's damn proud of it because games are kick ass!

A lot of games these days seem like they turn their nose up to the idea that it's just a game.  This one revels in it and I can appreciate it alot.  It also helps that it's super fun.

I kept hearing everyone rave about Bayonetta over the past two weeks and I was getting more and more disappointed that the game wasn't clicking with me. I tried the demo three times and hated it because I kept dying. Reson being:

1.) There was too much shit going on at one time.  You're on a falling peice of concrete while fighting angels, meanwhile a giant dragon flies around trying to crush you. My mind = blown.
2.) I never bothered with the tutorial, so I didn't quite understand the combat system.

I did some reading up on Bayonetta and found out that it's important to use the dodge button in order to activate "Witch Time," which is apparently key when in battle. Once I learn this I fire up the demo, go through the tutorial and sure enough the game finally clicks with me. Everything begins to make sense and I'm no longer getting my ass handed to me in combat. I play through the demo a couple more times and find myself getting better and better at the game. Eventually I learn to love it.

I went out to the store and bought Bayonetta yesterday (last copy too). I played through the first three chapters and I'm happy I gave the game a chance. It's one of those games that is so crazy (like GodHand) you can't help but love it because of it. Bayonetta is a joy to play as well. The combat system is so well done; it seems like there is a lot of depth to it. I find myself learning more intricate combos as I go along and the upgrade system gives you a lot of play around with.  Also, the action button acting as a sort of damage-overtime component on the bigger enemies and bosses is both brilliant and satisfying.

You can never be told old. It sounds like you should have taken rests in between chapters more.

Just wrapped up my first playsession of Bayonetta.

I LOVE BAYONETTA. There's just something magical about a poledancing witch killing angels with her wicked hairdo - I can't resist.

Looking forward to tomorrow's session. Good times!

I would've imported that soundtrack if it wasn't for the price. It costs as much as a brand new game, and for a soundtrack -- even one as huge as Bayonetta's -- that's far too much.

True, for those that have bought it though, it might spark some life into it making them want to hunt down all medals as they should.

Yea, it was Chapter 10 with those keys and sphere's., you get that feeling you get with Galaxy.

An install option would be good to have as part of a patch. If it's happening I imagine it will take a while, so it's best to be patient.

I did at one point, but it wasn't one of the Witch Walk segments. It was the part in the magma cavern, where you go into Paradiso to get the time-reversal hourglass. There was something about the bright, colorful environments and the way the water looked that just reminded me of Mario Galaxy...

Absolutely. Chapter 10 or something, it goes very Mario Galaxy doesn't it?

EDIT: Nearly beaten the game on PS3 by the way, and the technical issues are a bummer, but I'd still say if it's your only option, it's still worth a go. It actually looks quite pretty at times, but that framerate can be a big jarring.

What's most frustrating, is all they had to do was package the game with an Install. I know it's not ideal, but it would have cut loading times by three-quarters. It's still a sloppy solution, but when your game takes 5 seconds to PAUSE, why the fuck not.

Still holding hope they'll patch in an install option to at least fix the loading.

I have played through the demo on 360 (1080p/37"/5.1setup). I enjoyed that little bit, the art direction team deserves a cookie or two, and of all the DMC/God of War games and clones this should easily be the best. I do wonder what else they throw at you after the crazy madness that was the demo.

However, I still stand to what I said before.

@Linkyshinks: I was wondering about that. WIth 360 players trying it on ps3, the specific frames they're looking for might not even be there. Playing it on ps3 to begin with, I suppose i've adapted to it anyway, so it wasn't something I noticed. For the most part i've been able to dodge enemies, but maybe it would be easier to do so on the 360. There was only one encounter* where I found it hard to engage witch time, but I was spamming dodges anyway so the error might have been on my part.

I've only done the prologue on hard so far, so maybe the issues with dodging will present themselves as I go further. I suspect it will be punishing.

There are definitely some going way over the top with their criticisms. I didn't like the tone of IGN's opinions. As far as the flaws being game breaking, hell no, that's clearly not the case on the evidence of PS3 users like for the game also. The issues do effect gameplay significantly though, and most certainly as far as the games presentation. All this stuff looks amazing on 360!. Ryan made little or no mention of how amazing the tech is in this game!. All that aside, Bayonetta's gameplay demands a high constant frame-rate, especially so on the hard mode where even the slightest frame dip can effect your ability to read the play and act accordingly. I played on PS3 last night and noticed it all mate, there was no joy in it all being evident..I just thought to myself how sad it was that Sega dropped the ball on something potentially huge. This game deserved to fire on both cylinders... It could have been very close to par, not on par due to the development process the game took, but close enough for PS3 users to be perfectly happy. In fact given the style of the game, in terms of colour palette, the PS3 game could have looked cooler in some ways. I do not like getting hit now, if I get hit I get seriously pissed, I got pissed playing the PS3 game.

@Linkyshinks: I don't doubt it, but it's been made out that the issues are game breaking when they are only an annoyance. A smoother frame rate and shorter loading times wouldn't have made the game any more fun.

Only when you have the luxury to play through both the games do the extent of the differences become apparent. But having only played one version there was never anything to break up the flow of the story or gameplay where I felt the game was at fault for something shitty happening. The GB guys said that they didn't notice anything major when playing through the demo, and it runs like that for most of the time, so I don't think Ryan's points would have been made or at least the extent they were if he had only played the PS3 version.

Dude, you can have no idea of just how deficient it unless you've played the 360 version and been wowed by it.  I don't take any pleasure in saying that.

Ryan sums it up in well his review, just as I have in this and numerous other threads.

@Linkyshinks: I ended up buying the game after all on PS3. It was my only means to play it, and I had a HMV gift card I wanted to use.

As I had suspected the tech issues are way overblown. If you slow down and focus then the animations do look a bit rough, and there I some screen tearing which I only noticed 15 chapters in. What I mean is that while there definately are issues, they generally weren't noticable to me, since they didn't affect the gameplay. I was still able to time my combos and such.

There was only one time in the whole game where the frame rate dropped noticably for a long period and that was one mostly non-important section near the end of the game.

Hell of a game. I loved the variety. Only found about three of the alfheim portals, but could manage just one lol. I'm gonna play throught it again though, and try to finish everything up. I need to buy the alt. rocket lounchers for my feet. Them things are so overpowered.

Thank you for the advice, I'll give it a try later. It sounds like I'm a "n00b" at it, which is probably why I'm not understanding the love for the game. ^_^;

I will definitely be getting it and I do think it's a good game, but I just didn't understand what was so special about it, personally. It's a shame that the PS3 version suffers from some bugs, but as long as I don't play the 360 version, I won't know the difference.

Also, I love Bayonetta's guns on her legs, I thought they were fantastic.

Loving it too dude  You could also try upping the contrast and colour a touch, seeing the red lips clearer may help you target a little.

"Bayonetta bares little resemblance to those [weak] Devil May Cry Capcom games, I really wouldn't go into it thinking it's going to be the same.  Bayonetta was made by the original creator of the franchise who made the very first DMC only, that's it's only connection to that series, and it's a weak one given the monumental strides this game makes.   .... "

I wouldn't call the DMC series weak on the whole, though DMC4 lacked the OOMPH of the last game in the series, DMC3, which quite frankly is still just about as good as Bayonetta.  Young Dante and Virgil are still some of my favorite characters from a game, and it's still pretty hilarious the kind of completely insane over the top stuff that goes down in it. "

I didn't call the series weak, DMC 1 and 3 are quality games, I was referring to the weak 2 and 4 which are ill thought out. Bayonetta takes this genre to the next level, it's better than DMC or any other game of it's kind /

I'm eight hours in. So far it's been phenomenal, but it does have issues; I've experienced some of the same problems Arthur Gies had with the game. Sometimes the game takes Witch Time away for no reason at all which can be really annoying, and when there's a lot going on on the screen, it can be pretty hard to see if an enemy is about to attack you or not.

In the big picture though, those are minor gripes -- so far the positives have greatly outweighed the negatives, and I'm having an absolute blast with the game. Rodin is possibly the most badass character I've ever seen. I think he might actually be the best merchant ever in a game, which is really impressive when you consider the competition.

"Check this out. Whadya buying? Hehehe... heard that in a game once."
"You bring me enough of these halos, and maybe I can buy a ticket to space. I've always wanted to be a bald space marine."
"No matter how much you ask, I'm not putting a chainsaw on your arm."

The references to other games in Bayonetta are just plain awesome.

Been having a blast playing the game so far! Getting near the finale, but that won't end my playtime as there is plenty of stuff to earn and buy at the shop, not to mention finding and beating the Alfheim challenges. Shame to miss out on the Climax Edition, but the posters from GameStop are nice enough.

Yeah, fun games are holding the "medium" back from embracing it's destiny as an "art form".  Or something like that.  I dunno.  I still think gaming is a bubblegum hobby, not an art form or a lifestyle choice, so I bought Bayonetta, said hurr hurr durr boobies, and had a blast.  Best sixty dollars I've spent on a game in a long time.

Me also, I don't mind slushing snow, but the wind chill factor is something else entirely!

It's even worse here in Stockholm. And some people like it. I mean, I guess the snow looks pretty... but dude, the cold is just unbearable.

3.5 hours left until the store opens. 3.5 hours left until I get my hands on the game. 3.5 hours left until I have to wait a bunch of hours because I gotta do some stuff before actually playing it.

Oh definitely not, I simply came across it today while taking in some printed culture.  Yea, it's the "witching hour".

I would normally encourage anyone to buy such a awesome game, but to be perfectly honest mate, I simply cannot do that when it comes to the PS3 version of this game. I say that with no bias at all, I can assure you of that. I say that simply because I want you and all others to experience the wonder of this game as intended.

The FPS in this game is absolutely vital for the game to maintain it's excellent gameplay, there's way too much going on in this game to have to endure terrible frame dips that  distort your ability to read the game. The combat demands a rock solid FPS, something even the 360 game cannot provide that throughout. There's also the issue of woefully long loading screens which break the intensity and flow of the game too harshly on PS3.

As far as external polish is concerned, textures in places seem worse than those that can be found in the best PS2 games. The lighting so dark and murky in places it gives the game a totally different atmosphere on PS3, and blurry undefined edges mean some of the most visually awesome moments are simply not going to be appreciated by Sony PS3 users to the same degree. I've played it, I know first hand how well it compares to the 360 game. The experience is sadly diminished.

I do understand your eagerness, if I was in your situation I would buy it regardless to hearing those like me telling you not to. If your not getting a 360 any time soon, maybe you should go for it, I naturally want everyone to experience this game, ideally as intended.

I hope Sega provide a patch for PS3 users down the line. If you get the game, I think you may too ^^

Which is not known for its video game reviews, let's be fair.

I have to say though, now that it comes out, well... today technically, I keep getting more excited about the game. I'm thinking of picking it up on the way back from college. It would be the PS3 version, but hearing about the nature of the technical flaws, they don't seem that bad to me outside of the dips in frame rate. I just want to experience the game now.
