In a way it's almost unfortunate to see this game being as popular as it is because even tho it has a coat of paint to make it look like a "real" game, it's still a gacha game through and through. Shallow mechanics, lots of grinding and vile monetization. I say this as someone that played many gacha games over the years (FFBE, Puzzle and Dragons, Fire Emblem Heroes, Pokemon Masters, way way more I can't even list them all) and eventually quit the entire genre because I couldn't stand being complicit in how predatory they are.

There's virtually no responsible way to support games like this as a casual player. Either you're a person who can resist the compulsion and stays Free 2 Play, or you become a massive, waifu-chasing whale. Don't let the fact that this game has immense production values and a pretty open world fool you into thinking this game is "better" than the hundreds of gacha games to come before it

Came to comments to complain about Ben and Jan's confusion about what an actual Roguelike is, but the comments already had me covered, gj family

Yes, the Mystery Dungeon games are a take on more traditional games like Rogue and Nethack and not what modern "roguelikes" and "roguelites" are, which don't resemble those original games at all outside of pretty broadly adapted design elements. When Jan suggested that games like this must be played for their story due to the fact that they have auto battle I had to chuckle

The Secret of Mana remake gets a bad rap. It's not perfect (there's some highly questionable music choices - but the original OST is included, so whatever) and it launched severely buggy (most since fixed) but as a diehard fan of this franchise who has played through the SNES original a dozen times, I had a great time with it. I really loved all the skits that played when you rested at inns. Also the voices of the mushboom people of Matango are hilarious and have to be heard to be believed.

A lot of the negative narrative surrounding its release was about how it played too much like the original, rather than trying to fix/modernize some of its jank, but I'm glad they kept it intact. I've seen too many remakes of classic RPGs try to properly modernize it to some disastrous results (go check out the remake of Lufia 2 that came out on the DS for a perfect example of what can go wrong in trying to update a classic). If your only exposure to the SoM remake is passing mentions from people who haven't played it but like to parrot the opinion that it was bad, I say check it out.

This motion blur is absolutely out of control. Really wish they would turn it off (if able) when looking at games. I noticed it was a problem during the Athem coverage as well.

Jan got so salty =(

Look up the "sleep clause" there's a pretty common rule in competitive Pokemon that if you ever put 2 of your opponent's pokemon to sleep you auto-lose the game. Mass sleeping a team is well within the mechanics of the game but one of the more common no-no's of battling. I know this isn't any kind of official event, and if you're new to pokemon battling there's very little chance you would see that you did anything wrong, so it's no biggie in the end, but please realize that it's very bad mannered to do, even in a casual setting , the same way maxing out the evasion of one of your pokemon is (which is covered in the evasion clause, another fairplay rule of pokemon battling)

This is one of my favorite games of all time. I'm glad console players finally get to play it. There aren't enough games like this in general on consoles and it's staggering that they made it work so well with the controller. No use complaining about it if you have access to the PC version, just stick to that. This does look better than having no version of it at all, even if it looks pretty dated next to the current PC patch.

My favorite part about every pokemonday night combat is how surprised Jan says "oh, hey!" at the camera like we just walked in on him doing something naughty
