Here is my top 10 list for 2009
I'm glad to see that this game is getting some recognition during peoples best of '09, but I would like to talk about a point that I haven't heard anyone talking about, the animation. This game has the best animation on Batman I've ever seen. How he flows from each attack, between each thug is flawless. The focus on the last hit to a group of enemies when Batman hits them just looks cool. After playing through this game my friend came over and still saw me do some attack that he hadn't seen in his play through. That's awesome.
I didn't play the 1st game, so I can't say anything about the improvements, but I can say that this is just a top to bottom amazing action game. Really the comparison to big blockbuster movies is a good start, but really, here you are in control of the crazy situations that Drake finds himself in. There has been some good discussion on how well the developers made believable characters, and I'd just like to raise my hand in agreement. And lastly, this game looks really really good.
Now I did play the 1st Assassin's Creed, and I will talk about the improvement this game has made. Basically every system has been updated, improved, or tweaked. The combat is still good, but not perfect because it is still a weird stand off type of fight. The assassinations are improved, but still scripted. But what I liked the most was the streamlining of the game flow. Using the villa as a semi hub was a good idea. It really helps push the game along. Even with its slight rough edges, the game was great fun, and that's top priority for me.
I really loved this game. Its got a great art style, and just style in general. It plays great, the controls are smart, and fun. Yes its roughly a re-skinned Pikmen, but its wrapped up in a great fantasy package. Really wish it got more attention when it was new, so more people would play it. If the 'core' gamers could get out of their brown killer sim games and give this game a try, they'd find a lot to like about Little King's Story.
This game was kind of a surprise for me. I knew I like the art style, and the premise sounded great. Who doesn't want a loot fest wrapped in a good shooter. I know I want it, and I played a lot of this game. I played my first play through, and I'm fending to go back and play another run with my main, and start a new character. That's the mark of a great game.
While overall not a big improvement over RE4, it was still a fun game that did a good job on the co-op main game. I'm really proud to say my wife and I played through the main campaign like 3 times. It was still fun to run around killing zombies.
When I first saw this game back in E3 I think, I saw a game that was doing it right. Now after playing it, I can say the bulk of the game is good, but what I thought was lacking were the nightmare chase scenes. They were more frustrating for me. Using the motion controls to shake them off, while needing to point on screen to control the direction you run, thats a bad idea. But the rest of the game uses the controls exactly how'd like. Plus the light and shadow system in Shattered Memories is great, and even more impressive running on the Wii.
I was really really excited to get this game. I played the demo like 5 times. It was such an amazing opening. Plus I found Ophelia hot. Well back to the game, after that great opening, assuming you kept doing the story mission actually keep getting better and cooler. But this being mostly an open world game, at some point you stop to do the side stuff, and well it was like all other open world games, kinda middling. But this one had Ozzy, and Lemmy, and Halford, it's better. Overall I'd say the game as just awesome. After finishing it, I really spent a lot of time just driving around listening to the incredible soundtrack.
I had a hard time picking my final spot. It came down to Mad World or Muramasa. Mad World was an ok game, in a great style package, but in the end, I just played Muramasa more. Plus, being one of the only 2D hand drawn games around, I have to shine a light on it. The way everything moves is silky smooth, and with an amazing attention to small details. While most people will say its just a button masher game, if you play it on the harder setting, you'll see that won't work.
