Oh, not again... What have you gotten me into?

The Bomb Squad and the Giant Bomb forums have done it again. First Claude convinced me to buy a Wii, and now with all the talk of PC ports being better then the console versions have I was tempted to upgrade my PC from the older (but still decent) Q6600 rig that I had. I never thought I'd be a PC gamer, because generally I like to sit on my couch or bed and hold a controller in my hand. The solution it seems was to get a 25 foot (8.3m) long HDMI cable and hook it up straight to my TV and get a wireless dongle for my 360 controllers, which most games seem to support. Except for blasted Mass Effect... How hard could it be when you have console versions of the game out there?

However guys, playing on the PC is a thing of beauty. I'm absolutely in love. It has it's weird hiccups like freaking Steam not installing and not allowing me to install my retail disc copy of Skyrim (had to install in safe mode for some stupid reason) but overall it's great. Playing games with max settings with solid 60 FPS in true 1080P is amazing. For some games it's night and day between the console versions like the Witcher 2 even though the Witcher is passable I guess on 360.

Anyways, the games I've played since picking up my new system in the last month include:

  • Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning
  • The Witcher 2
  • Mass Effect Trilogy
  • Bulletstorm
  • Batman Arkham City
  • Blur
  • Velvet Assassin
  • Skyrim
  • Crysis
  • Crysis 2
  • Portal 2

EDIT - Added:

  • Max Payne 3
  • Dragon Age Origins
  • Alice Madness Returns
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Prince of Persia 2008

Picked up Amalur today... Maybe I should have done it sooner... Anyways all of the games look fantastic. Is there any other games that I'm missing out on by not playing on the PC? Anything that is just loads better then on its console counterpart? Also in case you guys are wondering my specs (which I posted in the rig thread, but might as well post here as well) are:

  • i7 2600 @3.4Ghz
  • AMD 7970
  • 8GB RAM

So I hope you're happy bombers... You made me invest in a PC. What next a Lion? Actually... now that you mention it...

Your PC is better than mine but I have to suggest getting Mirror's Edge because it looks freaking incredible and I personally find it really fun and it's different from any other game, and I think it's easier to pull off moves with mouse and keyboard than a controller.

About $1400 CAD after all taxes. Cost a little more then it should have since I had to buy a separate PSU.

@MonetaryDread: I have Max Payne and can run it max. It does look quite beautiful.

hmm... that video card can play games at 1080p with 60fps? that's cool I think I'm gonna get it cause it's pretty cheap. Also you should try GTA4 on the PC with those realistic textures.

Yep, it can. Easily. The only card that can currently compete with it as a single GPU is the GTX 680. The 680 is a tad more powerful but is almost capped out, where as the 7970 can be heavily over clocked if you want. Both are fantastic cards, and the 7970 is currently cheaper.

@LiquidPrince: You need to pick up Max Payne 3.  I say this because I just built a new computer a couple of months ago and no game will push your system to the limit like a maxxed out max payne3.  There are times where the game looks just as good as the Star Wars 1313 or Watch Dogs trailers, only the game exists.

Another fun thing to do with your computer is to buy a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles, download the Dolphin Emulator, then download the HD texture pack, and play the game in 1080p on your TV.  The game is fugly as shit at 480p and really does look like a 360 title when you play on pc. Plus, if you spend the money to make your wii-mote work on pc, nearly every game looks/runs better on pc, another that is beautiful to play is the Mario Galaxy games.

Uh, he's right. God of War 3 looks incredible in the boss fights. And only then. They clearly lavished the most time on those sequences as the texture resolutions are a lot higher to compensate for the closer camera.

All the normal environments (especially that God-awful Escher-style garden labyrinth) look really drab and muddy.

Uncharted 3 is consistently more well detailed. And while Drake's character model isn't as detailed as that of Kratos, he animates better and every environment generally looks far better.

@LiquidPrince: Dude, if you like Blur, get Split/Second. That game is GORGEOUS on PC running at 1080. As it Hot Pursuit.

But really, Split/Second will provide you with the most glorious initial 3/4 hours of racing of any game ever. It gets a little old after that due to a lack of environments and the handling doesn't have the depth of something like Hot Pursuit (or the recent Ridge Racer: Unbounded) but the spectacle more than makes up for it.

Congratulations, becoming a PC gamer is a gift :D What did you think of Crysis?

I think what I have always thought, it's technically very advanced but artistically very drab. While not looking as sharp on a technical level, on a artistic level, I still maintain that Uncharted looks far far prettier. This is taking into consideration that Crysis is an open world game etc etc... It's just games like Uncharted look more natural and realistic to me. The forests look overgrown and lush, while in Crysis if you look at the trees, a lot of the time it looks like they just copy and pasted them everywhere.

What did you think of Crysis aside from the graphics?

Aside from the graphics? It's a decent shooter open world-ish shooter. I actually prefer the second ones style of more driven experience then the wide openness of the first. I think I'm in the minority there though.

I'm struggling to understand why that game isn't more popular, or at least rated a bit more highly. I haven't even played it yet, but I sure liked what I saw in the QL a while back.

Nah. Rather play comfy on my couch with a controller in hand on a 40+ inch TV.

Speaking of, how's that coming along for most games? Did it require a lot of fiddling or do you just plug it in and go? What about games that don't support controllers (Mass Effect)? Are there a lot of mods for those or do you just use XPadder?

And, finally, if you do have to resort to good ol' K+M, how do you go about doing that? Do you just move your computer to a desk or do you plug them in?

EDIT: Oh, right. Game suggestions. Have you played Dead Space? It looks great on consoles, it should look even better on PC's. Also Darksiders.

Well this my updated list of games:

  • Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning
  • The Witcher 2
  • Mass Effect Trilogy
  • Bulletstorm
  • Batman Arkham City
  • Blur
  • Velvet Assassin
  • Skyrim
  • Crysis
  • Crysis 2
  • Portal 2
  • Max Payne 3
  • Dragon Age Origins
  • Alice Madness Returns
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Prince of Persia 2008

Of those games the only ones that don't support controller are the Mass Effect Trilogy, and Dragon Age Origins. In which case my TV is fairly close to my computer in my room, so I just sit at an angle facing my TV at my computer desk, set my wireless keyboard on my lap and play. It sounds uncomfortable, but it really isn't. It's very simple and I play the games that HAVE to be played with KB+M like that.

Magicka, which is 75% off on Steam right now is a hoot. Pick up a few copies, send it out to friends, and play.

I have a feeling Mount and Blade will be getting the deep discount this weekend, as well. Warband is the only Mount and Blade game I'd suggest picking up. With Fire and Sword's guns make it frustrating.

I've put silly hours in to New Vegas and Dragon Age: Origins.

Also, an oldie but goodie. If you've never played Freespace 2, its a must. And Track IR support!

It's like Crysis in that it does really complex caustics (shaders which physically simulate light propagating through atmospheric conditions), localised motion blurs and physics. In a way it is less optimised (not poorly) because the engine is properly calculating those things dynamically and specifically rather than doing rough approximations and artistic estimations.

That's actually the one game I haven't played much of on that list. I just installed it to see what the graphics looked like and to see whether it supported a controller. From what I've played it looks pretty awesome. Reminds me of the early Splinter Cell's with great atmosphere, and the initial story tidbits seem interesting.

I dunno... I have it both on PC and 360 and when I swap between the two, it's kind of laughable. It is a pretty game for sure, but I think there are prettier looking games on 360 like Gears of War 3 for example. If we were comparing cross platform, games like Uncharted and God of War blow the 360 port of Witcher 2 out of the water in my humble opinion, although they are different types of games.
