Best of 2010
This list is a prototype, and not necessarily in final order! I'll be modifying it as I experience more of this year's lineup.

This game occupies my #1 spot for 2010 -- even though many clearly better games came out this year -- for one simple reason: it bucked so many trends currently ongoing in the games industry, and I desperately wish more games came out that were like this.

Red Dead Redemption takes Rockstar's open-world formula and spins it into something fun, engaging, and wonderful through-and-through, pulling you into the otherworldly atmosphere of the American wilderness in the early 1900s. The campaign pads itself out a bit in the middle with a long and deep look into the Mexican political climate of the day, but even then, the game absolutely doesn't suffer for it.

Though you wouldn't expect it from a studio that's released nothing but solid, finely-crafted music experiences (EyeToy AntiGrav) aside over the last ten years, Harmonix has put out yet another hit -- this time delivering the startlingly functional and wonderfully tactile experience of learning actual instruments through plastic controllers.
